Join us on a musical journey through 40 years of Calypso Monarchs, featuring legendary artists like Scrunter, Tobago Crusoe, Penguin, and more! From 1982 to 1991, these calypso stars wowed audiences and left their mark on the music scene.
Scrunter had the will to dethrone three times calypso monarch Chalkdust in the fight for Calypso supremacy
CARIBBEAN INSIGHT TV (CITV) programs are cultural documentaries demonstrating the history of West Indians through their musical artistry. CITV's mission is to provide innovative, practical and top-quality products that will serve as a conscious raising vehicle and a cultural organizing tool for Caribbean History.
Scrunter’s musical career got national attention in 1980 when he sang the popular song, ‘Woman on the Bass’ which easily became a favorite for steelpan competitions throughout the island. However, it was his 1982 offerings of “Lick-e-Thing” and “The Will,” that earned him the Calypso Crown title in 1982.
Born Ortneil Bacchus in Culloden, Tobago, Crusoe’s talent is also well documented back home in Trinidad and Tobago. The gifted lyricist won the coveted National Calypso Monarch title in 1983 with “South Africa” and “Don’t Cry Now”. And, although he kept his promise to never compete after that win, he remained active in the tent circuit before migrating to England in 1991.
Born and raised on Coffee Street in San Fernando 1962 when he joined the Southern Brigade. He was given the nickname Black Stalin by fellow calypsonian Blakie in the mid-1960s. In 1967 Black Stalin joined Kitchener's Calypso Revue tent. Stalin won the Calypso Monarch competition for the first time in 1979 (with "Caribbean Man" and "Play One") and went on to win it again in 1985, 1987, 1991 and 1995.
Cro Cro won four Calypso Monarch titles: 1988 ("Three Bo Rats"; "Corruption in Common Entrance"), 1990 ("Political Dictionary"; "Party"), 1996 ("Dey Look for Dat"; "Support Commentary Calypso"), and 2007 ("Nobody Ain't Go Know").
Steadley Joseph is one of only seven Calypsonians with the distinction of winning both Calypso King/National Calypso Monarch and Road March titles. He won the Calypso Monarch in 1984 with “Woman doh like soft man” and “We Living In Jail”. 1942 - 2013
Hollis Urban Lester Liverpool, better known as Chalkdust, is a leading calypsonian from Trinidad and Tobago. Liverpool began performing in 1967, but he wrote calypsoes in school back in the 1950s. In 1968, one year after launching his professional career, In 1976, a much younger (and rather virile looking) Chalkdust won the Calypso Monarch for the first time.
