  • The Sun Hive (Weissenseifener Haengekorb design by Gunther Mancke)
Based on an ingenious combination of skep baskets made of rye straw and wooden support structures, the Sun Hive is intended to be installed at a height of at least 2.5 metres (8 feet). The shape of the hive harmonizes with the movement gesture of the bee colony and enables the bees to design their brood nests according to their own innate criteria.
The hive was designed by German sculptor, Gunther Mancke, and represents the fruits of many years of research into the nature of the honeybee colony.

I have coconut and mango tree to pollenate in the Philippines. Building standard box hives is prohibitive as my staff are poor and ignorant. These skep hives and their cousins seem to be an option made from local rice straw and part of the palm fronds and bamboo cross bars. Thanks

So in other words a good mix of plain old cob will do the same trick. I see no need for all the cow poo. It is mostly for the straw content anyway. Cob will breath and help balance out the temp. A bee cave. Easier for the bees to keep cooled as needed. :)

So mixing clay and sand together and then use as plaster? I bought a beeskep and need it waterproof.

@@niels1491 I don't think clay and sand will make it water proof. If it rains on the clay and sand it will wash away. You will need a rain cover to prevent the rain from washing it all away.

So it is 3 buckets of cow dung, 1/2 a bucket of earth, 1/2 a bucket of wood ash and 3 - 5 liters of what?

I would be wearing gloves not because of the wood ash but because of the cow dung...grose.
