@@robrto2411 It's easy in case of Benedict. In his 30s he was already very famous lecturer in Europe. He was the youngest professor in Germany. He was very respected by people who didn't agree with him like for example Mario Vargos Ilosa, Jurgen Habermans or Uta Ranke Heineman. French decided to give him prestigeous membership in French Academy. He published many books and articles. There's even Ratzinger Prize aka Nobel of theology. He speaks 9 languages. According to experts he's one of the most important theologians of XX/XXI century. So he's definitely high class intellectual and one of the smartest Popes in history.

Document from 15th july is very important. He wanted to limit the practices of bishops who instead of reacting moved the perpetrator to another parish like in US.
Thanks to Ratzinger it was possible to remove a bishop who hides the perpetrator. As a pope he ordered to open archives, started investigations and removed about 400 pedophiles in 2 years. Instead of slandering him unreasonably, read some reportages, results of journalistic investigations, opinions of historians or biographies cause he did more than any other pope to deal with this problem and he never tried to cover this up.
One of the most brilliant popes of history! He speaks Latin, English, Italian, French, Old Greek, Hebrew and, of course, German (his mother tongue). He plays the piano and he's written many books since he became cardinal.

Ratzinger wanted to retire many times (in '91, '96 and 2001). He was the one who demanded investigations in case of pedophiles in church and published document which ordered bishops to inform police about sexual abuse and refused to take part in celebration of Maciel. He also didn't want to be a Pope. He compared this to death sentence.

Go join a Traditionalist order with the Latin Mass. The Novus Ordo is a ‘fabrication, banal, on-the-spot product’, in the words of then Cardinal Ratzinger. The Traditional Latin Mass developed organically, basically going back 2000 years to Christ’s Last Supper. The Novus Ordo Mass was concocted with the help of Protestant ministers back in the 1960’s. That’s why it is ‘Man-centered’ as opposed to ‘God-centered’ and the Priest faces the people and you often face each other (in the common semi-circle seating arrangement).

That does not mean I agree or disagree with all his statements, or that he would expect anyone to do so, the Magisterium is not the same thing as Papal Infallibility, and in particular does not bind conscience. Cardinal, formerly Professor, Ratzinger on becoming Pope Benedict made it clear that liberals were to be treated with respect as long as their postulated opinions were coherent. He is not the reactionary extremists on both sides have claimed him to be although he is a self-admitted compartmentalist, as for example in the matter of Fr Leonardo Boff. I respect both him and Pope Francis greatly and believe they make an excellent team, as Benedict put it as theologian and pastor, and as Francis put it as a grandfather everybody listens to and to whom the father (Francis himself) can turn for advice. It may be none of my business as a Byzantine but it saddens me that the usual suspects, the sedevacantists on one hand and the believers in guilt by association on the other (of course evidence of gross malpractice such as paedophilia should go to the Pope given the cover-ups by some local bishops in the name of “giving scandal”) have entered this discussion, banging their drums with self-righteous zeal but little if any love or respect for their fellow human beings, including the ones they claim they are standing up for but in reality they are using and objectifying.

As a German I am very proud of Pope Benedikt XVI. He was the best pope ever. As a priest, teacher, researcher, bishop, cardinal and pope he proclaim Jesus Christ to be the first in everything. Ratzinger is a man of truth. But lot of my fellow Germans laughed at him. I am upset. Ratzinger is still a light send from God. Hopefully many will still realize. We will miss him more than Hans Küng.

Unfortunately, Benedict XVI was unable to accept the consensus offered by media that Catholicism was outdated. He may be perceived differently by future historians of the Church, who may recognize his refusal to drop the standard which the Church has maintained throughout the centuries.
It's all gone downhill after Vatican II. Pope Francis, as liberal as he is, is merely a product of the greater issue which is the Vatican II theology. Thankfully, the younger generation of Catholics have returned to tradition. Hopefully a future pope will realize this soon, or the church will endure a painful process of "natural selection" in which the modernist churches close down one by one and only the traditional churches will remain.
