    For the whole season it's felt like we've [Geelong] (I'm a member so I'll say we), been waiting for 'our best' footy, and waiting for things to click. Aside from a 93 point beat up of Sydney in Round 6, and two beat ups against Essendon, it just hasn't this year. The midfield lacks a 'go-to' ball winning accumulator. Guthrie being injured all year and Selwood retiring hasn't helped in that area. The Ratugolea experiment didn't work, the pressure game to game isn't close to the level it was last year, and Cameron's goalkicking the past 3 months has been wayward and costly (mad respect for him playing through all the knocks though).
    After yesterday's meltdown, at home against the 15th ranked team, who the majority have deemed 'the biggest disappointment of 2023', I'm totally cool with Geelong missing finals this year. Have a full off/pre-season and bounce back next year, no point finishing 8th just to get bundled out right away.

      People talking a full rebuild, it’s a bit of an overreaction. I agree I’d like to just see them reset and go again next year. It’s not like our list is in serious trouble.
      Geelong actually have some good young players: Zac Guthrie, Sam De Koning, Jack Henry down back. Holmes and Bruhn will continue developing in the middle and hopefully Knevitt and Clark can get some exposure in these last few games. Close, Ollie Henry, Gryan and Stengle down forward. Jez, Cam Guthrie, Blitz, Stewart; they’re not as old as everyone makes out - to be 30 isn’t dire. Someone like Hawkins has proven that and he’s been very useful all year bar those few opening rounds for someone who is 35.
      The only one that really stands out in terms of their age getting the better of them at the moment to me is Mitch Duncan, yes Danger isn’t the same player he was but he would still be useful for another run next year. Just manage him properly like we did last year and let him make an impact when it matters.
      I’d just like to see us go for a ruck and an actual elite midfielder in the off-season. Sell the lifestyle and opportunity for success like we always do. Get the boys to take a pay-cut to get them in so we can have another go. You get an elite midfielder in, suddenly you add Holmes, a fit Cam Guthrie, Blitz, Bruhn, Danger when he’s firing and a decent ruckman and the midfield isn’t such a big weakness. It’s seriously just the midfield that is causing so many issues for us at the moment we lose the clearances and contested possessions what feels like most games.

      I still feel like even if Geelong make the eight other teams wouldn’t want to face them. Definitely thing this is more of a transitional year to experiment a bit before going full speed again In the coming years

    • @terrythekittieful
      @terrythekittieful Před rokem +1

      I reckon Geelong can get into the 'eight', albeit into the lower half and could get as far as a Prelim if things went their way, but that's a big 'if', a lot would have to go right. They haven't had enough traction to look as though they can be a serious threat to the very best, however all we can ask for is that they give it their best shot for the remainder of the season and come out swinging for the games to come. Failing to get to the finals or go out in the first or second week if they do make the finals, we can only hope that will burn into the younger brigade, players like Ollie Henry and Max Holmes especially to make amends in 2024. It's still good to be a Cats supporter regardless of what happens.

      Pretty similar same case with the Golden State Warriors in the NBA last season. Nearly everyone was waiting and expecting them to just flick the switch and when the play-offs arrived they barely got through the Sacramento Kings in the 1st round and got knocked out in the 2nd round by the Los Angeles Lakers in 6 games. In the end their inconsistency and inability to win on the road essentially doomed them from retaining the title. Geelong probably make the Finals and even win the Elimination Final but its very doubtful they get past the Semi-Finals if they face Brisbane at the Gabba or Melbourne. However unlike the Warriors the future is very bright if you guys manage to bring in Sean Darcy, Bailey Smith and Darcy Parish from my Bombers who I honestly believe we should let go to focus more on the defence and actually getting some bigs into it.

    A big issue we have is outside of Danger and Bruhn we have no bulky inside mids. I’m hoping this is addressed at the end of the season because we just get killed because we can’t dominate the ground. Guthrie being out does make this more noticeable, as there’s no Selwood anymore. Ruck also needs to be addressed. Club has to go hard for Darcy, local lad and we are crying out for a dominate ruck. Stanley bless his heart been a honest contributor for years but so many times just gets outworked and yesterday he was horrible.
    I wish Scott never opened his mouth about “he wouldn’t want to play Geelong late in the season”. The group seems to have gotten ahead of themselves. Even though Port are in a batch of bad form, without Hawkins and Blicavs the team structure is going to be a lot different.

      From the moment Chris Scott said we're the threat the Cats have played like a team that doesn't deserve finals. You are right not only about this team getting ahead of itself but how desperate they need Sean Darcy. Luke Jackson made mincemeat of Rhys Stanley (who has to be in contention for the worst player in history to get a Premiership medal).

      Actions speak louder than words. Even if the media didn't say a thing it is pretty obvious to me as a Cats' supporter that my team wanted to achieve a lot more last season than what they appear to want to achieve this season. Otherwise they wouldn't be constantly losing matches that I would be expecting them to win.

    This time Kane Cornes is absolutely 100% dead right with his assessment about my beloved Cats. I couldn't have said it better myself. We have lacked hunger all season. We are complacent. Let me also add that we are nothing but a bunch of downhill skiers who only win the matches where we are comfortably in front and everything is running our way. I am furious that the players could not lift and give Chris Scott the win that he deserved in his record breaking game as our coach. Is this all of the thanks that he gets for so many years of loyal service to our club? This also shows the lack of passion and hunger from this playing group that you didn't see at Geelong last season.

      Let's add a few more. Duncan, Hawkins, Rohan, Bews, Dangerfield. We need to retire as many players on our list as possible who are aged 30 years or older, and we need to blood our younger players and start the next generation of future Geelong champions. The remaining 4 rounds of this season would be a good time to get the ball rolling. That's far more important as far as I'm concerned than whether we make finals and get bundled out in the first week.
