    Would love to see more of these advice videos :) I primarily play piccolo in the wind ensemble that I play for. It’s really nice to hear people talk about it into depth because uuuh no one does 😂 I feel like it’s one of those instruments that aren’t really given it’s own spotlight if that makes sense. People just hand it to you and expect you to play it but that is not the case. It’s a whole different instrument!!

    Very good advice mentioning leaks. (I work on these things). Low D is often the hardest note to play clearly if the adjustment is off or there’s a bad pad. With woodwinds, we always start at the top of the instrument and work our way down, checking for leaks and checking adjustments and regulations.
    So, headcork, fit of head joint, trill keys, upper stack, G# key, 1 and 1 Bb, then F, F#, E, D adjustments.
    Great video and advice! Somewhere I’ve got an 1800s picc in Db. Has only four keys and the rest, holes, if I recall correctly.

    Glad I found this video! I’m planning to buy a piccolo flute soon.
    Funny story, back when I was in HS band, we were waiting to march in the Reds Opening Day Parade, my band friend at the time showed me how to play some notes and I learned Amazing Grace in five minutes 😂. To this day I can somehow play piccolo, but not the flute as my lungs find it difficult

    When I was in high school, at our spring concert, the band director had me run through a complicated section of one song with my flute. Then the second time through he had me stand and go through that section with my piccolo. The song and the way we performed it were (unbeknownst to me) planned on purpose as I was receiving an award for band. The good ol’ days! 🤗

    Just got a new piccolo because im starting to get more serious about piccolo
    I was just messing around trying to figure out how to stop spitting in the high register (specifically B flat) and your tip about pulling your lips back and making your aperture more flat (in the lower register) actually helped me hit that B flat a lot more consistently. You may have just saved my audition. Thank you

Five minutes in and I'm already playing let it go on my piccolo. It's not perfect, but there's SOUND which is huge step!!

    • @aarya4083
      @aarya4083 Před 3 lety +5

      honestly when u play try to pulse your air using your diaphragm or your muscles, also sorry this is so late I just looked up this video 😅 but go slower like at quarter notes then half notes and just keep going quicker if need to or want to

    • @audreyhimes9278
      @audreyhimes9278 Před 4 měsíci

      I've had four years of flute playing experience and two months of piccolo experience, so I suggest using your stomach muscles to control the air pulsation. If you're still not quite getting it, I'm sure there are several videos on how to do vibrato. Good luck!

    I play the clarinet and now i wanna play the piccolo...😳Would it be beneficial to learn another instrument for when applying to colleges?...like do they like people more who can play multiple instruments?-btw im a freshman rn so i would have a while to learn) also if so what instrument would be easiest from clarinet? :)

    • @ethannylander
      @ethannylander  Před 3 lety +3

      If you’re majoring in music, you really don’t need to be experienced on another instrument. You really just want to be as good as possible on the one you’re majoring in. For music Ed students, you’ll have to learn a lot of other instruments anyway while in school. If you want to learn the piccolo for fun, go for it! It’s super fun to play. I’m not sure what would be easiest after playing clarinet, but I used to play clarinet and bass clarinet and switching to flute and piccolo wasn’t terribly hard. You might also want to learn bass clarinet or Eb clarinet if you’re majoring in clarinet since you have time to get good at those too and you’ll be unstoppable when you get to college.

I don't really know what music major i want to major in yet, but Im pretty sure I don't want to be a music ed major...bc the thought of a bunch of middle or high schoolers talking about me is scary😅😅but ya never know. I think flute or piccolo would be fun to learn so maybe ill try it out sometime! + thanks for responding so quick:)
