South Periphery: Weird, licentious, isolationist, sometimes paranoid, but civilized. North Periphery: HAVE YOU HEARD OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR, MAD MAX????!!!
I was originally planning on running a Time of War game set in and around the Free Worlds League, but damn do I want to run something in the Rift now just because of how batshit that region is
This'll be the last lore video for couple weeks I think now while I knuckle down and get the Third Succession War scripts finished. I will probably release a couple chapters of an HBS BattleTech playthrough before then. There'll be one more chapter in this mini-series after I finish that game. I bumped the timeline forwards to 3028 for this one. Felt appropriate since we've been going for about three years now.
@@EricDKaufman Considering Kerensky stopped by there during the exodus and left a bad review of the local restaurants, I'd definitely say it's just barely within the Rift
You know, I get a lot of flak for liking the "dead and forgotten background faction" of the Rim Worlds Republic, yet their ghost is everywhere and it's something that makes my day whenever we hear of the..."descendents" of the RWR. I just wish the Finmarks lasted longer.
@@MDFification1 Yes. However I feel like they're a century late to the setting. Though if they popped up earlier, they'd definitely have been wiped out by the clans for reasons.
Great video, thanks for that. It's a funny thing with some players; they've played the game for decades, know the Houses, the various mercs, Comstar and the Clans and can talk and debate them for hours (slowing down a perfectly good battle) and yet apart from the three larger periphery states and a couple of pirate groups they've fought, their eyes sort of glaze over when Niops, the Lothian League, St. Andrews etc. are mentioned. Needless to say I've told my group to watch your previous video (and will this one too). Oh, was Santander V and jolly ol' Helmar Valasek overlooked or do you consider his band not part of the Rift bandit kingdoms?
I was gonna include him (I said half-a-dozen at the start of the video but then added in the Ptolemeans in his place) but technically he's in the Draconis Drift and not the Rift. He'll probs get a mention in the 3rdSW towards the end.
Some of the worse periphery pirates of the period between 3025 and 3075 were actually from the "civilized" Inner Sphere. Red Jack Ryan was former LCAF, Helmar Valasek was AFFS, Vance Rezak was DCMS. Of the 5 worst offenders only Lady Death Paula Trevaline and Hopper Morrison were born in the periphery. Johann "Ceasar" O'Reilly was also a native of the periphery, but he was more a concurring warlord who supplemented his recourses and income with privateering.
I love and appreciate getting to learn the detailed backstory of these parts of the setting I've never really read into before (despite being into it since the beginning). I feel very well briefed on the history of the Inner Sphere at this point.
Ah yes.. Sigurd... Brings back the days of pirate hunting in mechwarrior 2 mercenaries, until stumbling into some very interesting, militaristic, high-tech animal worshipping people...
That's way more relevant to Inner Sphere history since it's Katrina Steiner's pseudonym while she's in exile. It'll absolutely come up when I reach that point in the 3rdSW.
As always, I enjoy your history lessons. So glad to see more of the Periphery covered. Such an interesting and mysterious region full of possibilities.
Welcome to my favorite area of the my periphery for all the weird stuff. Enjoy the Rosetta Head Hunter missiles, the weird Blakist undersea converted Amaris factory, the weirdos at Stars End and cap it off with a hunting expedition at Hunters Paradise!
As far as I know, it's sole appearance was in the 25th anniversary book. Very minor thing to include but I wanted to highlight that some of those systems that have been greyed out are still supporting sizable populations.
As always, thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this video. It’s hugely appreciated and I enjoyed this one just as much as all the others.
I've given them a lot of focus in the past, in the Reunification War series especially. I just wanted to focus on some of the more minor fractions in these episodes.
Bandit or government... In BT it's all a matter of perspective, the ability to gain "respectability" through force of arms, and whether the bother of deployment of a single nuke can easily & quickly resolve any difference of opinions.
You're not wrong. The Successor States are nothing if not hypocritical. They'll decry bandit attacks striking at their periphery facing worlds, then turn around and launch another invasion against their neighbour.
I mentioned it in the 2ndSW briefly. Grimm was described as someone who was once reliable but has slipped into a kind of paranoia. He was tasked with defending a crucial lynchpin near Terra but snapped under the pressure. He claimed a lack of support from the LCAF, and several other sources have given that at face value, but in the context of his known personality, who knows what the actual situation was.
Well the scripts were already written for this one, so I sat down to record after yesterday's went out and then did 50/50 last night and this morning to have it rendering over lunch. When you don't have many complications like map work to slow things down you can really crank this shit out after you've been doing it for a while, lol
@@getfreur2458I meant with Finmark and Oberon. They destroyed any semblance of functional government that could have kept the pirates in check. They wanted an unstable region but didn't consider the long term consequences of creating a lawless region right in their own back yard.

Last time I was this early, stefan amaris was walking into the golden corral!
He was definitely an “unlimited buffet” kind of guy.
I miss the golden coral where i live
There are still some in Illinois.
That man was wearing a bib!

does that mean we'll have to wait a couple decades for the clan invasions
Ha, realtime history wasn't my intention.
So, where is Van Zandt and why did it get scrumbed off the star charts by ComStar out of pure spite? 🙂
@@EricDKaufman Clearly, you are not familiar with the Fiesta Pail incident.

So much takes place in the great house territory, it's nice to hear about them too
Periphery is such interesting area of battletech. Good job on your videos man

Wooo! More BattleTech lore! Rewatched the Star League Civil War, started the First Succession War video. It's been a nice week so far!

Hell yeah, thanks Sven

Your doing an amazing job and I look forward every week to your videos. Please Keep up the Great work. :)
Always a treat when Sven posts a new video.
Brilliant work, this adds so much spice to my knowledge of BT fluff.
The Bandit Kingdoms are definitely spicy.

Great video. I'm surprised you didn't mention the actions of The Red Cousair (the first one) as she was active at the time.

I'm finally caught-up, woo-hoo! 8:31 Finally! At least SOMEONE in this setting has the self-awareness to call themselves a King.
Oh their days are definitely numbered but I don't think their end will come from the direction they expect...
These are coming out fast😮 I love it. Especially since I have the week off to enjoy them without the thought of work in my neck. Thanks man.

Been reading thru the first couple of Battletech books and having watched a bunch of your videos made it really enjoyable.

And then the Clans showed up!
All these different groups, all equally trashed come 3050.

I really dig these sideshows!

Excellent work Sven! I love these mini series!
It would take about 25 more years before pirate activity in that portion of space would be brought to heel.
Really enjoying these punchier lore videos, a nice change of pace before the next big series. 😊
Loving these!
looking into the inner sphere for the Fist and the dragon, but missing the bear, the wolf, the falcon and the jaguar.
Thank you. The micro states and bandit kingdoms get so little attention. Great work as always sir.
As good as always! Thx,Sven.
Outstanding as always
Another banger from Mr Plank!

Haha, Butte Hold
I pronounced it correctly this time, lol
well I'll give that philosophy credit no good has ever come from the inner sphere the seemingly to screw everyone over
I love hearing about these areas that I frequently forget about, myself.
Does the lore say why the original Hendrik Grimm went AWOL?

Good place to test your mettle before embarking on a great crusade.
Ah yes the bandit kingdoms, the Lyran's very stupid prize for the very stupid game they played with the remains of the RWR.

I love the idea of a pacifist faction thinking they'll inherit the Inner Sphere...
Absolutely the least genre-savvy group in fictional history.
