Not only use a tube screamer, but use as little as you can get away with - I will use a TS-808 or an Xotic BB Pre with a tiny amount of pre - like 0.4 out of 10 on the dial, depending on the pedal. Just enough to push the head a little, but not enough to push you into mushy town. Great video!
Yes! Your EQ is essentially a band-pass - not as aggressive as and actual band pass, but it makes it more pronounced. Same thing applies to vocals in some circumstances.
@@FrightboxRecording You are welcome! We are a hard rock band based in Singapore doing our own home recordings and your tips has been very helpful to us!
This is where I use amp sims and the CLA guitars plugin then some saturation but this tone is killer, thanks for this! Also is there any reason you used R compressor instead of R axe? Assuming you have R axe lol
That's a great question. I've been using the R Comp for 13 years and I know it inside and out at this point. I stick with the tools I know best and just roll with it. That being said, I gotta give Renaissance Axe a shot...I actually own it and never use it lol. Thanks for watching!
Frightbox Recording that makes sense, I don’t have R comp but if it’s ever $29 I’m gonna grab it and give it a try, thanks for making the videos, always great stuff

@@FrightboxRecording thanks man, I'm still learning a lot about home recording and mixing but I can defiantly tell a difference from when I first started about 1 year ago, and remixied my first few songs which I'm starting to put out and hopefully will have a good batch of tunes by the end of the year to put out an EP/LP
Great video as always ! Just another question, which of your custom IR's do you use exactly (as well as their parameters/tweekings) for your lead guitar tone ?
I use my own that I make myself at my studio. I don't have to tweak anything outside of using the right IR for the job: frightboxrecordingacademy.com/ir-octopack/
@@FrightboxRecording Thank's for reply ! But out of the 8 impulse included in the Octopack which one would be the most suitable for Solos/Sweep Picking in your opinion/experience ?
@@benjaminbovay10 For leads, any of them can work. That being said, you can't ever go wrong with the SM57's. They work on anything....leads and rhythms.
I would really like to know how to get a smooth lead guitar tone but something more along the lines of a lower Amon Amarth Lead, where they are playing on the lower strings for lead and not higher strings. I am really very much struggling at the moment to get a good tone and or mix such a task. Any help is beyond very much appreciated, thanks \m/
This tone was recorded with a cheap Steinberg two channel interface and nothing more. All you need is an amp sim plugin and a solid IR (which you can download for free via the link in the description).
I loved the video, super useful. Would these settings also work on a modeling amp, using the same types of pedals? I am looking for a similar tone for practicing and playing at home.
noob question, why do you turn up the bass and the tremble nobs on the amp and then roll off the high and bass on the eq? (i dont understand turning those up andd cutting those frequencies on the eq)
Hey man! The reason why I use high-pass filters is to roll off all frequencies below a certain cutoff point. The tone knobs on an amp don't filter frequencies in the same way. Also, adjusting the low/mids/highs on an amp can sometimes affect the way the amp feels when playing through it, so it makes more sense to keep them as they are and filter in the mix.
Hey man! That sound clip is a WAV file that is the actual IR. You load the WAV file into any plugin that allows you to import impulse responses. If you're still having trouble downloading it, send an email to frightboxrecording@gmail.com and I'd be happy to send one directly to you. Thanks!

Bro you are a genius. I don’t understand half of what you’re saying but it sounds awesome. (Bass and drummer, wanna be lead shredder here haha)
Nice tones! Love the smoothness of the lead guitar!

'bitch picking' i lost it lmao im so guilty of that
I really want to nail this myself. Was the Neck or bridge pickup used on this recording?
Both. The beginning of the solo is the bridge pickup and the shreddy part at the end is the neck pickup.

Yes they will! The trick is to use some form of overdrive or tubescreamer in front of the amp.
