Great review. You had my laughing checking your mail box. I just got the same whistle and I was the same way-impatiently waiting for it to arrive. I agree
with all your points this whistle just FEELS right.

Loved your review. Watched it 3 hours after I ordered my first Kilarney D. Even more excited after watching your review. Thinking of tearing down my brick post box and getting a tin one like yours :-) lol

Nice review video thanks. I received a Killarney D from McNeela just last week. I had almost given up when playing a Feadóg and another cheap one because of the poor sound quality. The Killarney is beautiful, as you say. For the first time I'm playing without being frustrated. Beginners should always get the best quality instrument they can afford. Give the mass produced ones to the experts who will get a good sound out of them anyway 🙃

OK so lesson here is, don't use a Stanley knife to open your new Killarney when it comes!!.. lol. Waiting for mine and looking forward immensely to its arrival. Thanks for the great review and getting happier with my choice by the minute.

Yup! They are sharp knives! LOL. I’m still loving that whistle.

Good review. I just got a brass Eb Killarney and I’m with you. Simply the best I’ve played. I’ve been playing mass produced whistles for years and have wanted a Killarney for a while. The one thing I think is amazing is that I barely have to put any effort in to hitting the top of the second octave compared with the first. The only negative thing is, it tends to clog faster than the plastic head whistles, on account of the brass blade. Especially when it’s cold. I live on the Oregon coast and it’s often 100% humidity and 45 degrees out. Sitting next to my fireplace with a hot fire is the best. I hate putting it down really.

Interesting video, I have a brass D Killarney ,which is now one year old, bought last Christmas
In my opinion it is simply the best whistle for a beginner or for a more experienced player with the exception ,which you made, that it might not suit a session player, but then again if you are a session player you are probably using a whistle costing two or even three times the cost.
I would not swap my Killarney at any price, when I play it ,when I put it down, I want to pick it up again. Thanks for your video.

Killarneys come as brass Bb as well. Every bit as delightful as the C, D, Eb

I bought the brass version of this whistle. Was well impressed with the quality / build. The first thing I noticed about this whistle was the unusual overall balance of it. Very "top heavy" compared to my other whistles. This was not an issue for me but I am surprised you never mentioned that in your review. Maybe it's only the brass version that's "top heavy"? Nevertheless, a good review Matt. Cheers matey.

Good point Jim, it is a little top heavy but it doesn’t bother me. That’s probably why I didn’t think to mention it.

Nice review! I’ve been intrigued by Killarney since I bought a high D from KerryWhistles (the new copper Cobre) and I’m not thrilled with it honestly which is a real bummer. Found out about the Killarney like a week after I received my Cobre. There’s no going even to the high C on it😩 maybe I just got a bad one? Idk. It cost as much as a Killarney but it’s definitely not as nice as I thought it would be. I have 2 other whistles from Phil and I love them! And A and low D. I’ll be getting a Killarney D and Eb here soon for sure. Thanks for posting this!

Do you find it clogs? Some people have said this about it...

@@ariellelionessofYah if I play it cold sometimes, after it warms up a bit the condensation isn’t as much of an issue.

Hello Ari'elle and Matt! I am choosing between the Cobre and the Killarney. Do you have any advice you could give me please? Does the Cobre take a lot more breath than the Killarney? Is the Killarney a lot quiter (eg too quiet to play in a session?) And does the Cobre have a nice a tone as the Killarney? Thank you!

If that is not the best version of Swallow's Tail reel I've heared, well i don't know what is. What happened when I opened mine, I cut the end of the pouch too. Shit !

    • @MattSaunders
      @MattSaunders  Před 3 lety +1

That makes two of us! 😅Thanks for the kind words. Kevin Crawford taught me that version many years ago and I keep coming back to it. Maybe I’ll do a video on that version.

@@MattSaunders I would like that very much a video of it. I'm a fiddler and in every session I go to, I play that reel.
