It's very popular to bash Hammett, but his rhythm playing especially is very underrated. Lets be honest, the guy he has to match night after night is arguably the best rhythm guitarist around (Dave Mustaine always says Hetfield, himself, Rudolf Schenker and Malcolm Young are the greatest rhythm guitarists in rock/metal)
Kirk has always been the type of lead guitarist who composes his solos, he himself has said that improvisation is something that he has had to work long and hard on. I don't think that takes anything away from Kirk as a lead guitarist though, it's just he's better in the studio than in an impromptu jam.
Schenker is german & 65 Hammett is 57 & American I highly doubt you ever taught either one of them anything and if you did youd be far too old to be in this comment section without assistance lol

I don't get how there is so much hate about people who critique kirk. It's pretty obvious that schenker can come up with something on the spot a lot better and he might have a stronger melodic sense. I do not like kriks work or style but the fact that he can't improvise that well doesn't make him bad. And the core thing in playing guitar is exactly that: training to do it right, training your hands to be synchronized, your fingers to move on the strings without dirt. And this is the exact thing that Kirk skipped completely, dedicating all his time to mashing and thrashing. A fan could call it "his style". A guitarist couldn't.
It makes him a poor professional...one that can't read doesn't know theory has poor technique and is just good enough for Hatfield which is okay but he is a joke not a guitar hero.
Hammett plays the wrong notes 80% of the time. Nobody hates the poor guy. It's just embarrassing. He should finally learn to combine pentatonic scales with modes when soloing!
Kirk’s soloing in E over a riff (that he wrote himself) which is in the key of A. What an absolute tool. And to top it off, the riff is the simplest 12-bar blues shit ever.
Love Kirk’s enthusiasm but it’s just not good playing. Schenker is one of the few players from the 70’s who is possibly better than he was then. One of THE greats. He also seems like a decent guy. Kirk seems like a super nice guy and I’m happy for him that he has had all his success. As a guitar player, he isn’t a very good improvisor and that’s forgivable because he has and does write really good parts. It‘a funny that Schenker is such a big influence on him. He didn’t cop Schenker’s great vibrato or his melodicism. I can’t really hear Schenker’s influence in Kirk’s playing but it is fun to watch the guy play with one of his hero’s. Life’s short. Since he “came up with” that rhythm, he should have been able to nail it but it just didn’t sound very good. I’m not a Kirk hater, he’s a solid player and has written some very cool stuff. Spot on dude, Schenker is a force of nature, a volcano of creativity, it's almost 50 years he plays like the God he is and still put out quality music once a year, his catalogue is infinite, I've lost the count! Kirk is a super nice guy but he's sleeping on the fortune of Metallica's first four albums, his creativity is mediocre and he's becoming sloppier and sloppier .. That's the difference between a real artist who breathes music and a worker of rock who lives thanks to the music...

He isn't an improvisor, he wants to be! but he's not.
