How to Block Invasive Bamboo Roots (Rhizomes) the Easy Way!

  • If you have invasive bamboo roots (rhizomes) that get into your lawn and garden, I'll show you a fast, safe, fairly easy method to block them.
UPDATE: 2/11/22 - almost 2 years and the barrier is still working.
UPDATE: So far, so good. I added another 15' of sheet metal wall to other garden areas, and in the 4" margin between fence and sheet metal, placed tar paper over the dirt to block out sunlight. Bamboo loves sun...
UPDATE#2: The original garden box (the one seen in the video) harbored 2 or 3 rhizomes that I hadn't seen or fully removed, causing frequent, annoying upward shoot growth. I waited until the tomatoes and corn ran their course, and then dug up the remaining bamboo rhizomes. You CANNOT leave any remaining bamboo rhizomes, anywhere, or the bamboo will re-emerge.
UPDATE #3: 3 years now, and it still works. The neighbor's ridiculous jumbo bamboo still thrives on their side of the fence, and occasionally pops into my yard at the fence line, but has NEVER gotten past my sheet metal barrier.

Thanks for this Mike this is good to read - i'm keen on planting in some different bamboos on my back line, but don't want to cause irritation for myself or anyone else, so am going to use your technique to block out a perimeter for the beds and keep the bamboo penned in!

or properly mix the cement then poor it in like a real gentlemen.
doing it the other way makes weak cement. using too much water or improperly mixed or unmixed cement is asking for it to crack and break apart.

Good on you! I am looking into bamboo as a hedging for our new house. But I do not want to cause problems for the rest of my yard or for people on the other side of the fence.
As I am a welder, a steel barrier crossed my mind.

There are two types of bamboo, clumping bamboo and running bamboo. Clumping bamboo is easier to control. It doesn't run and spread like the running bamboo.

Would installing a 2 foot tall raised bed for bamboo to grow in keep it contained? My husband and I have discussed it because we could dry the poles to use for projects. However, im also concerned about it spreading and creating a problem so i am brainstorming how we could grow some but not have a bunch of issues from it spreading.

That's a good question, and the answer is... I'm not sure. In theory, it could work. Worth a try, maybe, and watch it close. Be prepared to contain it with an underground barrier, I guess. Good luck.

Great question -- I think, when I bought the entire inventory of what Lowe's had at the time (about 12 sheets)... I had to settle for both thicknesses. 1/16 (thicker) is definitely preferable -- easier to pound into the ground. Thanks for watching!

I'm currently in the process of digging out rhizomes seen sprouting toward my homes foundation. The fence is needing replaced and bamboo is thee only thing keeping the fence up. That said, I'm looking for a cost effective barrier. I like your idea!

You need to be careful with this because usually any barrier you put into the soil need to be like a cone toward the top, so that when the rhizome hits the barrier it grows to the top of soil so that you can cut it off, or it might grow underneath the barrier and you are back to square one. Bamboo is a wonderful plant it is just a shame that some people who plant them don’t find out prior to planting it if they are runner or clumper and take necessary precautions. I have loads of bamboo and a few videos about them too.

Everyone loses there minds when it comes to bamboo. Compare bamboo vs regular trees that destroy houses, knock down power lines, kill people, must be taken down by professionals charging thousands and leave stumps that are 100x harder to remove than bamboo. Compare to lawns that have to be maintained every single week with expensive power tools. People dislike bamboo because they think they can get away with zero maintenance. Must trim the flipping roots a couple times a year, it's no big deal! I've had it for 15 years...but I don't let it into my neighbors yard....that's just ridiculous.

    • @doggygaming950
      @doggygaming950 Před měsícem

Also bamboo only spreads by root, it's the most predictable plant their is vs just about everything else that spreads via seed and can have stuff spreading for miles...bamboo is NOT invasive. You will only find it near where it was planted.
