Noctua coolers in general are pretty straight forward to install, but the NH D15 Chromax Black is a cooler that needs a bit of planning when installing due to the physical size and the way that it can cover RAM and be very close to the graphics card, often hindering the mounting of the Noctua spring clips.
So take a look at my guide and this should give you some tips and ideas to make your installation a little easier.

I'm so glad someone mentioned how big this thing is because it doesn't seem to be mentioned on other channels or Reddit. I'm sure its a great performer but I've spent a day trying to wrestle this monster into my case. I've got a standard ATX case and motherboard but it's so huge that I had to pull out the existing motherboard, pre-insert some cables like CPU power, and system fans because I knew I'd never get my fingers in there again once the motherboard and tower were put back in place. I regret trading my Dark Rock Slim but I am looking forward to decent performance and quietness.

Tested mine a while ago on a cheap a320 mobo, as I was worried about weight distribution on the AM4 backplate in my oddball case and orientation in the sharkoon rev 200 for linear airflow but worked out great. If your building an overclocked pro audio set up and like in my user case using for line level recording electrical hum is non existent as have had issues isolating the feedback from cheaper CPU fans and especially AIO pumps in some set ups. Isolating case fan noise is easy but the CPU fan is always a bit of an issue. To get clarity in analogue signals using progs like wave lab, Ableton, Acid Pro etc this gets top recommendation from me. On a separate note I know you was probably just eager to fit but recommend leaving thermal paste application to the very last minute before fitting the cooler. Less chance of contaminating the paste with foreign particles as you work around it and les chance of spreading around on everything you touch if you accidentally get some on your finger. Covid researchers could use thermal paste to study transmission. 4g of MX2 could infect 1/4 of the population of Bristol in just 3 hours LOL.

These massive air-coolers are awesome. Aye, they basically block out the ram and the whole cpu area, but there's just a raw visual impact of having a huge heat-fin tower filling up most of the case space.
I kinda wish there were similar aftermarket pass-through coolers for GPUs (nowadays add-ons are water based, and stock coolers pull air into the card instead of past it like cpu coolers do; so the airflow on the lower case half is usually a mess).

The price of the Noctua NH D15 Chromax Black is $100 on the US Amazon. Not a bad price, as it's about $30 less then what I paid for my waterblock. Although, installing a waterblock is much easier, and they fit in any case and RAM height isn't a probable. Personally, in my opinion a hard line open loop is much more attractive than a big block of metal and fans covering up the entire motherboard. A waterblock is also silent because it has no fan. LOL

Just ordered one of these for my 3900 (non X), due to my very warm 5700 sitting so close to the CPU, it is proving impossible for the wraith cooler alone to do the job. I also suspect that the system builders used some cheapo thermal paste so I will be replacing that at the same time I fit the Noctua, hopefully, that will remedy the heat issues.

I’m still clocking high temps thought, about 40 C at idle and 80 C at full load. Is this because I only have one fan? Looks like you put more thermal paste than I did - maybe that’s the issue? I don’t think there was any plastic or anything left on the heatsink to raise the temp.

hahaha...ha...ha.. I've watched so much and read how hot these Ryzen 7800X3D are... I'm building or actually improving an 11-year-old PC and I tested the motherboard, RAM and CPU all night. Unfortunately, I had an unforeseen problem with the cooling of the PROLIMATECH MEGAHALEMS.
I kind of had an adapter that fits AMD on AM2, AM3 and AM3+ which should also fit on AM4. Unfortunately, in the AM5, the spacing of the screws from the screwed catches is completely different. Fortunately, I also bought a heatsink, Arctic Frizer PRO 64, for retro AMD equipment...
Only 3 heat pipes. I used the same but on Intel C2D 6400@ 3.2GHz and it worked great. Well, I'll see how it copes with this hot AMD CPU ... And what a great surprise, the radiator is not even lukewarm. I used an old, about 8-year-old MX4 paste that had been opened a long time ago - it just fell into my hand from a box of others. At idle CPU around 40 ST. C, under the load of about 130W (from the wall socket), the temperature around 85-max to 90, the socket temperature about 40-47 max ST. C CPU voltage about 1.1V clock all the time at 4.8GHz.
The radiator is still barely lukewarm. Even the heat pipes just above the IHS and the summer IHS itself I checked with a pyrometer. Warmer frames around 41 degrees C.
The chipset (X670 chipsets) and its heatsink are hotter, already boiling -52 degrees C .
Power section.... barely lukewarm around 35 degrees C on large pieces of aluminum.
    MSI X670P WiFi board.
On the other side of the plate lying on an A4 paper envelope just below the CPU socket, barely 35 ST. c
I loaded the CPU with Cinebench 20 (max 110-115W from the socket), but only with my favorite program IntelBurnTest 2.54 by Agent GOD and the CPU instruction set replaced with linpack it reached 130W. By stressing 14 cores of the IGPU (GPU-Z and PCIe link test) I managed to draw about 150W from the socket on the 80+ GOLD ENERMAX power supply.
Either I got some exceptionally good piece of silicon or these CPUs are not that hot at all.
Oh and for the Kingston 6000 RGB memory exactly like that - Kingston Fury Beast Black Ddr5 64Gb 6000Mhz Cl36 (KF560C36BBEK264) I chose 2 XMP profile instead of XPO. They are identical in settings.
Profile 2 sets the memory to 5600 Mt and the voltage to 1.25V, the SOC goes to space at 1.3V.
I changed the RAM voltage to 1.3V and SOC to 1.1V and set the speed to 6000Mt. And it works beautifully. Test in Memtest UEFI, test with Linpack a few hours. Zero errors. There was no ECC in memtest.
Only this boot MSI board. Even nothing moved on 4800 jedec and still starts after a simple reboot about 45s to the post screen. Massacre... After turning off the power it's even worse, it's some madness 2 reboots until.

Hey Mike, you seem to be the most famous English speaking person that has communicated with V-Color. They have a technology called IMS in some of their RAM sticks, which apparently was developed by Kingtiger Technologies and patented, and also integrated into UEFI BIOS implementations from AMI, Insyde, and maybe others. What the hell does IMS do? I've read as much of the patents as I could stand to, and every press release. Do you know what IMS does? It sounds good but it's confusing as to what it actually does. Do I need to enable it? What supports it? Does every motherboard support it? My V-Color Sticks say "iMS+" on them, what does that mean? How is that better than non-IMS RAM? I'm so confused. It's interesting though and if it really means it's self healing ram, that's cool. I would also assume that if it did what it said it did, V-color would have an up-to-date website with all their products on it, and that Kingtiger Technologies would have an HTTPS website, so that's like two out of three fingers put down when I'm thinking if this is legit or not.

    • @mikesunboxing
      @mikesunboxing  Před 3 lety +1

from what i can tell the ims is very much like error correction in ECC ram so it buffers the data flow and if errors are present the data gets refetched until the error is corrected. So really it is enabling ECC on a non ECC system, at least that is my take on it.
I'll try and get some info on it and if successful i'll share my findings

Using the screwdriver at an angle was bad enough, but then the wraith doesn't stay aligned (slides too much when screwing diagonal), the screws don't tend to reach their slots, and I have to apply a scary amount of pressure. Removing the wraith was a little easier, even used a tool to help ease the wraith off of the cpu. I'd also be happy to be interviewed if you feel i have in some misled people by suggesting they save money on windows keys? As you say you don't necessarily need a key if you are happy with watermarks and a reduced windows experience, but that is for the individual to decide not me not you

The internet of now bears no resemblance to that of the 90s its evolved closer to the TV of the 90s..(hence the CZcams logo of course) ... which was.. guess what... full of adverts and sponsorships!
So what if some of it is like “infomercials”? If you don’t like it don’t watch.

@@dandan6799 yeah there is not a requirement to help out content creators it is optional but appreciated. Even "free" or public funded TV or broadcasts have advertising or biased content - commercials or propaganda are commonplace if you look hard enough
