That's probably WHY it's a habit for him.
He's so used to calling his partner by gender neutral pronouns that he just tends to absentmindedly call CIS people by gender neutral pronouns.
Like how CIS people (even allies) are often so used to calling people by gendered pronouns that they'll sometimes call trans/non binary people by the wrong pronouns on accident even if they know and respect their gender identity.
