I, as an Irish person, recognise all the issues - I'm old enough to remember when all Irish people were suspect when the IRA bombed somewhere, played out very spectacularly with the Birmingham 6 and Guilford 4 - it was perfectly acceptable to arrest the wrong Irish people, because we all were guilty. As an Irish person in Britain, somewhere my great-grandfather and his father were born (they moved to the Ireland of their ancestors) and am very aware that the inclusion we've experienced (not perfect by any means) since the mid-90s could change again as it did so many times through the history of these islands.

"White" is a shifting concept anyway, used to define the people included in the dominant in-group and exclude others, and that group changes over time as the idea of Us and Them changes. Like they say, race is a social construct! It's not some fundamental truth, it's just something that exists in attitudes and power dynamics
So yeah, Irish people have historically been othered and excluded (even worse the further back you go, and some US states literally called Irish people "coloured"), you get shifting definitions of which Europeans count, and people will twist and turn to justify it with talk about "shared culture" and nebulous "values" that are just as quickly thrown in the bin when those people fall out of favour. And that shift can literally happen within a single sentence, if there's a more important group to other - weird attitudes about Eastern Europeans conveniently melting away the moment there's a brown person in the mix etc. And if that scapegoat disappears, the "white/non-white" attitude gets directed back at another target, because that's what it's there for

Funny thing is all the rioters are working class, low educated men. There is no elite etonians or Cambridge grads rioting. I wonder why, oh yeah because the rich are educated and know why immigration is needed. The poor don't and get their education sadly from the daily mail. It's all by design. State schools underfunded because they need to be kept uneducated so they can't actually challenge the real problem, the rich. Wonder why politics is not compulsory teaching in secondary schools, yet Etonians (Eton schools) literally groom rich kids to be next MPs. The whole system is laughable.

My mothers Irish, my father came from Argentina, I was born in Hammersmith West London. By choice I hold an Irish passport and Identify as London or Anglo-Irish. I love my community; the working class people of this country and our ideological class cultural inheritance, the commons, Watt Tylers poor, The Levellers, Trades Unionists, Abolitionist's, Suffragettes but I reject, will always reject and refuse to 'integrate' into a version of 'Englishness' made for us not by us, by the country's capital elite. I'm not English, far less British whilst those identities, whilst that cultural narrative remains seated in a world view and structures of power that are inherently colonial, racist and classist. Until the day this country rejects a cultural identity that its majority class never made, which for most of our collective history has brutalised the English, Scots and Welsh working classes whilst committing genocide, resource theft and warfare abroad I will remain London-Irish, a child of the diaspora, a descendent of those made homeless by empire and its elite capital interests. I love my community (English, Migrant, Refugee) but have yet to see articulated a 'country' that we can 'integrate' into as equals.

This makes me very sad and angry. When I first came to this country in 2001, it felt like Southern England was the most willing country to adopt foreign people I'd ever visited. But as the decades have worn on, it feels like there's been an active push to demonise anyone foreign at every opportunity in media and in public discourse. By the time 2010 came around it had gotten to the point when if I asked otherwise rational people about immigration, the first thing they would say would be to parrot lines about "securing our borders" and "controlling mass immigration" as if those terms meant anything.
As of the Farage Riots, it seems maybe we've finally reached Peak Racism, but I fear we've not...

Firstly, the horse has bolted. If Britain colonised a third of the world and steals its resources (including people) and radically impoverishes the colonised countries, then its brutalised and impoverished victims will be forced to find a better life, especially when British culture is imposed on them, what do you expect was going to happen. It’s especially ironic because the richer, whiter countries are not breeding and their populations are shrinking. Immigration is absolutely necessary to replace those declining demographic categories. Capitalism needs workers and consumers. Yes, let’s have the debate about immigration, but make it honest. Stop leaving out gigantic chunks of the story in order to divide and conquer.
