Samus wasn't in it for the money in this game. She sought to finish the job since she knew how dangerous the X Parasites are. Couldn't take the chance of them escaping the planet they were on. Which was her motive in Fusion, dictating the use of the BSL Station's self destruct at first but opting the set the station orbit to intercept the planet itself.

Even though it was the metroid DNA that caused her to react that way, it still gave us an understanding as to who Samus is and why she's such a badass. I find Samus and Quiet Robe's interaction kind of endearing. First, she _only_ drops her guard when Quiet Robe does his little bow, and then she just sits and listens quietly to his exposition. Like she finally realizes that this guy is the same kind of Chozo who took her in and raised her when she had lost her family to the Space Pirates - like Old Bird and Gray Voice. Read the manga if you don't know who those two are.
And then, once she's heard the story, Samus doesn't just give a nod. She replies to Quiet Robe _in the Chozo language_ - one that she either never forgot or prefers to speak in.
Also, I find it endearing that Quiet Robe comes back as an X just to help Samus escape...kind of like how one of the SA-X helped Samus escape at the end of Fusion when she was confronted by the Omega Metroid...and again, she doesn't drop her guard until Quiet Robe-X bows...

I think Robe-X's goal in the end was to take Quiet Robe's DNA and make samus absorb it so that the Metroid DNA would be contained. Metroid Dread did everything I wanted to see in a fusion sequel. The way the X were re-introduced as one infiltrating the Chozo, being somehow quarantined on ZDR, released, and then overrunning the planet in a matter of minutes/hours was awesome. The X even tried to freeze the planet in hopes of killing Samus because of her Metroid genes. Raven Beak did not set that up, that was completely the X's instinct. I also really like how Quiet Robe initially was used as a X host but later gained influence over it to show the spiritual/mystical nature of the Chozo. One thing I did not get was that the elite guard Chozo-X had the means to escape the planet on one of the stationed Chozo space crafts but instead chose to fight Samus.

X have an instinct to fight off Metroids as they’re the only viable threat to the parasite. They also gain the intelligence of their host. Ok so. This just hit me but.
The big twist at the end where Raven Beak was revealed to have been manipulating Samus throughout the game by pretending to be ADAM?
It's foreshadowed throughout the entire game.
For one, ADAM doesn't call her "Lady" once throughout the entire game after the opening scenes, despite having done so twice before the actual game even starts.
He also has a bunch of weird word choices like "worthy adversary", which is kind of a weird way to warn somebody that they're no match for their enemy.
And he tells Samus that Raven Beak must've re-activated the EMMI when the cutscenes have already shown that it was the doing of Quite Robe-X.
It's staring you in the face for the entire goddamned game.
I'm still not entirely sure what to make of Quiet Robe-X's EMMI reactivation and why it decided to help Samus at the end there though.
Same goes for the SA-X from Fusion. Maybe there's something more to the X that we haven't been told yet? Like, thinking about it, most of the life forms on SR388 were feral, right? Maybe taking on the memories of a host with sentience has a different effect on the X over time?

    • @flerken4233
      @flerken4233 Před 2 lety +65

The Sa-X makes sense in Fusion because it’s been shown from the ejected secret lab that the Sa-X prioritize threats and see the Metroids as a bigger threat to them than Samus, ignoring her when Metroids are in the room. In the final cutscene the Sa-X identified the greatest threat, the Omega Metroid, and tried to take care of it. Here is a little more vague, other people said maybe the Chozo can control the X to an extent? Not 100% sure.

    • @patricklee8886
      @patricklee8886 Před 2 lety +117

Correct, Samus was unwittingly following orders from Raven Beak the entire time after she loses communication with the real ADAM at the bottom of the elevator at the beginning. Unintentionally poor choice of words by ADAM starting at 4:47 to allow Raven Beak to establish communications once she reaches the network connection room.
It's established canon lore that the X inherit the memories of the host they assimilate. I'd like to think it's less the X acting charitably and more that it's acting on instinct off of its hosts' memories which happened to be helpful to Samus in the situation. There will always be room for interpretation in the ending (according to Sakamoto to hint at future sequels) but I think the red X "sacrifices" itself to allow Samus to survive at the end because having the memories of Quiet Robe gave it the capacity and compulsion to do what the real Quiet Robe would've done in that situation (ie salutes Samus in gratitude, then integrates his Thoha knowledge into the Power Suit to suppress the overactive Metroid phenotype that was preventing Samus from controlling the ship).

This twist bums me out a bit since I was actually looking forward to ADAM's presence in this game. I have plenty of opinions on his human self in Other M, but the Fusion version is very nostalgic to me. That said, I'd argue this twist probable makes Raven Beak the most developed villain in the Metroid series BY FAR since you (unknowingly) interact with him on a regular basis.

It was never Adam. Adam, or at least the Network Stations, had been hacked by Raven Beak since the beginning of the game. All of Dread is just one gigantic experiment by Raven Beak to have Samus go through a lot of shit in order to awaken her Metroid genes after triggering the reaction during their initial confrontation. This is why she's been manifesting energy absorbing capabilities throughout the whole game. Raven Beak was just playing the part of the evil scientist making Samus run around like a rat in a maze until she became strong enough.

The ultimate "show, don't tell" progression of Samus in her conflict with Raven Beak:
5:54 - Samus hits Raven Beak and cracks his eyepiece. Raven Beak is unfazed.
53:09 - Samus destroys Raven Beak's helmet and gouges his eye. Raven Beak is in agony.
Note the fact that Samus got strangled twice by Raven Beak, and Samus also hit Raven Beak in the same spot twice. It's a kind of setup and payoff I respect in a story. :D

    • @ziqi92
      @ziqi92 Před 2 lety +29

I also just realized why she was so insistent on going for Raven Beak's right eye. It's the only place where she can make proper contact because of that crack and therefore allow her Metroid ability to work. Another interesting tidbit is how right before this, Samus takes a huge leap into the air when Raven Beak is down instead of, you know, dashing in. That's a big no-no in combat because it gave her a slower, more predicable trajectory, allowing Raven Beak to counter. It's a subtle hint at how her Metroid instincts are overriding her logic when she sees that the enemy is weakened.

The subtle movements of her armor indicate heavy breathing, which is not something she normally does even after all of her continuous incredible athleticism. I mean, sure, she gets over it quickly and learns to use it, but in that moment, you realize that Samus is legit scared of the fact that she's not fully in control of herself. It clearly took a lot of effort to hold herself back.

i find it interesting how both chozo were infected by the X but both seemingly reacted very differently, the quiet and humble quiet robes parasite became an X that understood emotion willingly sacrificing itself to get samus off world even if it can be seen as an act to take away her powers it still could have let her stay stuck on the dying world, meanwhile ravenbeaks parasite seems entirely fuelled by power, combining most of the games bosses into a horrific amalgamation all the while repeating ravenbeaks motto “power is everything” likely showing the malice and power that the parasite had gained from ravenbeak

@@Need_RnR You did not actually experience the game. The E.M.M.I's are way more scarier than SA-X because once they reach you, if you haven't mastered the timing of the counters, you're screwed. And they are much faster and smarter than SA-X was in Fusion too. Not to mention the fact that you have to deal with them more frequently than the SA-X. There is literally constant dread every time you're about to go in a EMMI zone.
      You obviously either:
      1) Have not ever been spooked by anything in real life.
      2) Don't know what scary means.
      Or
      3) Haven't even ever played the game.
I mean, if a 16-bit sprite graphic game scared you more than a game much more detailed more realistic like style graphics, you clearly need serious help.
Fusion gave the players the sense of fear, but it wasn't ever actually scary. Creepy sure. But not scary. Dread is both! EMMI's a terrifying when you first encounter them. And what's scarier is that they only become more dangerous with each one you encounter. And Dread is also creepy because Samus is constantly spied on and stalked by Raven Beak pretending to be her AI clone of someone she lost and loved dearly. And finally, it is terrifying and creepy when Quiet Robe gets replaced with a creepy X clone and that clone then proceeds to reactivate the much dreaded EMMI.
The game constantly puts you a position where you don't feel safe. Then gives a period of time of safety, where you don't have to worry about the scary EMMI anymore. Only for the EMMI to be reactivated and your time of peace is gone. And on top of that, all the creatures have been replaced by the X.
If you don't think that's scary, there's something wrong with you. Seek help!

@@Need_RnR How about you actually play the game and experience that yourself instead of watching a let's play. Yes, there a moments where you feel safe. But like in some horrors, those moments don't last. And are we really still ignoring the fact that Raven Beak quite literally stalked Samus and that all the Adam rooms were Raven Beak rooms all along? To me, that was very unsettling to find out.
Maybe you need to be spooked in real life in order for this stuff to feel genuinely scary to you. I mean, if you came across an EMMI or anything like an EMMI coming after you in real life, wouldn't you be scared for your life? I know I would. You do realize that once the EMMIs reach Samus, she's dies, right? They're not like most enemies that you can just easily blast away quickly and move on. They require a special weapon to defeat them. And you have to find that weapon every single time except for the last one, which Samus then just resorts to her Metroid power.
Before that moment, you're always constantly on the run for your life whenever entering an EMMI zone while the EMMIs are active. It's not like Fusion where you only encounter the SA-X a few times or Echoes other than a few encounters with Dark Samus, the only other threat is the atmosphere of Dark Aether. Occasionally you encounter Dark Pirates but as you progress, you eventually grow strong enough to deal with them quite easily.
Now, obviously Dread is nothing compared to Silent Hill, but it's still terrifying as hell at times. Especially when the X enters the equation. You really get that sense of "Oh my God! What did I just do? Why were there X in there?! Oh no! This is not good! What have I done?!" once you reach part where Samus accidentally releases the X because she didn't know they were being kept at Elun later in the game.
Maybe you just have a weird definition for scary but going by the actual definition, Dread IS scary! Seeing the X be unleashed and the EMMI being reactivated by Quiet Robe X, plus all creatures replaced with X versions as a result really struck fear in me the first time I saw that. That late part of the game really gives a sort unsettling vibe to me.
Fusion doesn't give me that feeling as much. And neither does Echoes. Especially once I'm stronger, later in the game. Dread is like Ocarina of Time but darker. You already have the EMMI. But later on, you have both the EMMI and the X to worry about. Plus Raven Beak! And the EMMI means instant death! As you progress, you realize more and more just how very much alone you actually are in the game. Especially when playing knowing that Raven Beak had been the one stalking you as Adam the entire time. And only one who Samus could really trust gets replaced by an X.

We've already seen something like that in this game where she drains the cores for the power necessary to destroy the EMMI robots. after completing my first playthrough of this game, i now understand why it's called DREAD
this game is amazing at making you feel terrified. you feel horrified entering the emmi zones. this new enemy made you feel completely helpless, mostly because you were. in an Emmi zone, you're being hunted. you're no longer the brave awesome samus aran. you're that little girl who's parents ridley killed. And to make matters worse, you're not just running from the Emmi, but a creature clad in Chozo armor who straight up wrecked you as soon as you landed on the planet. It wrecked you at full power.
now you've got basically nothing. and what's worse, IT'S STILL OUT THERE.
Hell, even the game mechanics are based around fear. to defeat fear, you need to charge it head on, and what's the big amazing thing you can do as samus? Smack things with a melee counter. pulling that off is so gratifying, but also very dangerous. which means it still doesn't take away from the fear you feel. especially with the Emmi. when they catch you, (and trust me, there WILL be times they get you) you're a caught animal, and you've only got 1 shot at survival. and it's not great odds either.
the most terrifying thing however, is how the Emmi adapt to your playstyle. and the best example of this is with the green emmi. for the first 2, you could easily get around them by sliding into areas they couldn't reach. but now? Now this green one shows off the fact that not only can it do that too, but it can do it better by crawling, getting into vents YOU CAN'T. turning one of your greatest advantages into a new weapon.
you are NEVER invincible in metroid dread. even during the end when you've got everything, the game still makes you very much afraid.
Dread lives up to it's name.

I cried when the scientist offered himself as a sacrifice. That means he probably knows how to control both the Metroid AND X parasite!!
    ok, Hear me out people:
During the final stages of fusion, It was confirmed by Samus that the X copy the body, mind and consciousness, but NOT the soul. There was even an event where Samus had to fight an X copying a human scientist from overriding the space station boiler room. Seeing the way X behaved after copying Quiet Robe Chozo confirmed it for me: The Chozo scientists are special. Special in a way that they know certain things that others don't, even the other Chozo tribes. Which makes me respect them even more, there is a GOOD REASON why the Chozo scientists wanted to destroy the metroids. Because they knew: THEY KNEW what would happen if they were allowed to live; wars, catastrophic damage, even people like Raven beak wanting to use them. We've seen this in so many of the previous games: space pirates, Ridley, Mother Brain, the Galactic federation breeding program in Metroid Fusion. The scientists knew, they say much further into the future. R.I.P Quiet Robe

I saw it kinda of the same way.
For me, it was more like the X that copied Quiet Robe learned from its host over time.
When it first copied him, it used his knowledge to turn on the EMMIs, so they could do what they were tasked to do (kill Samus). Killing off the last of its predators was its natural instinct. This is more evident by how it slowly reactivates the EMMIs, while repeating the last things Quiet Robe said, as if that is all it knows.
But as time goes on (aka the rest of the game), it starts to learn more about its host through Quiet Robe's memories. His morals, his views. It started to understand why the Metroids were created (not to kill but to cull the X), the reason behind why the Thoha tribe wanted to destroy SR388 (the Metroids had grown out of control and were just as dangerous as the X) and the dangers both X and Metroids continued existences pose (as you said, wars, catastrophic damage, and those wanting to exploit them ie. Raven Beak, Space Pirates, the Conspiracy, etc.). It understood that neither species could exist. But instead of simply keeping Samus on the planet until the explosion took both of them, it allowed itself to be absorbed, allowing Quiet Robe's genes to suppress the Metroid DNA, thus allowing both the X and Metroids to live on in Samus. Not dead, but contained.
In fact, you might say, because it chose the right host, this X developed a soul. But that, is open to interpretation.

But the morph ball can be used to pretty good effect in this fight, making one particularly dangerous attack miss you entirely and the power bombs being able to delete another of his dangerous attacks.
But more importantly, the only known way to get a Metroid off your skull after its latched on is a *morph ball bomb*. Which due to his own hubris, he didnt have. So his only option was the panicked flailing of an inevitable defeat.
