  • Creating this tune made me think of those moments when you’re in the zone, hyper focused and full of amazing thoughts and ideas. I feel like those times are increasingly rare for me 😅 with all the stresses and responsibilities of life, and I’m missing the ease of imagination I had when I was a kid💭
I’ve always had a mixed relationship with my imagination. For a long time I felt like it was something I couldn’t control, and there’s times of my life I’m surprised I remember much about because I was so often daydreaming 💭 Showers and baths seem to be especially good places for this, where Archimedes had his Eureka! moment. We also use some watery terms for ideas; brainstorms (or idea showers?).
I used to spend hours in the shower ⏱️ , in daydreams and figuring out problems, working out issues in my PhD research, writing stories in my head, tackling hard questions, and thinking about the future. 🤔
Something has shifted in the past few years where this doesn’t happen as much, and in some ways I’m glad because I don’t have the time, or the money for all that hot water, 🚿 and my poor skin is thankful, but I also feel like I’ve lost something.
Nowadays in an effort to be productive I fill my ears with podcasts to occupy the part of my brain that wants to wander. But I think I need to make space for it again. Maybe I’ve torn it down and now I can build a deliberate time and place for it, and that’ll be better overall 😊
The main place my imagination comes back now is on walks in the evening with music🎧, or reading a book when a word or idea spins off a thought📖, but I’ve heard we need some real boredom and monotony to switch off to really let our brains thrive, so that’s what I need to cultivate (but who’s got time for boredom these days?)
The music is the main thing for this piece (I think it has influences from 90s instrumentals like Flat Eric, and maybe some elements of the Mighty Boosh’s music in there), the video is just the best my tired brain could do to give it something visual. It’s hard to video falling water (apparently in Singing in the Rain they used water mixed with milk so it could be seen on camera ☔️🥛), but the scrubby pouffy thing looked like a rain cloud from the right angle and I thought that was cool 😅🌧️
