I'm Leaving Teaching In Dubai

- I’m leaving Dubai! Furthermore, I’m leaving teaching… for now.
While this should be somewhat daunting and perhaps something that others find concerning, the truth is, this is the most exciting period of my life!
After reading 4000 weeks by Oliver Burkeman, I realised just how short life is an, if given the opportunity, I should take some time to break and enjoy a short but extended period of my life. The book The 4-hour work week by Tim Ferris revealed the idea of ‘mini retirements’. These are short stints to switch off and enjoy life instead of just the 2 days (if lucky) during the weekend. So many of us graft for decades to enjoy our retirement only to a.) realise that this might be the most unhealthy time of your life or b.) realise we might not get there at all.

Long story about a free trip to Tahiti where a French guy that captained our sailboat asked me what I wanted in life.
I went home, gave 2 months notice at work, and spent 6 months driving around the southwest US. My only regret was not taking 2 years instead of 6 months.

Thomas, how exciting ☺️. I wish the best for your fiancee and for yourself. You're doing the right thing - life is extremely short, just lost a childhood friend to cancer who was 27.. He was diagnosed 6 months before he died..life is too short mate. Be closer to your loved ones, especially your parents long term. 🙏🏼 I hope your kids get to grow up around their grandparents, so so important 👏🏼

I would advise you if your going back to the UK if your still in retirement in sept and are in the UK to join a supply teacher agency on short term. THat way you can do what you want and on odd days make some coins. Money burns faster then we think so good to have some contingency like this. I learnt the hard way.
Congratulations on making a decision which will positively impact your mental health, well-being and your future self.
The education sector is beautiful but also a black hole if you're not careful and only those who have worked within education can understand this.

Wishing you the best in the future! Go for it! I have a question i would be very grateful for you to answer: i am a different generation, i am 55, but lucky to be in excellent shape and health. I am considering early retirement or just living teaching in the UK to live my long postponed dream of teaching in Dubai for a couple of years. I am a qualified teacher with 20 years experience. Do you think that being a 55 year old woman reduce my chances? Or will my application be even be considered? Thank you
I agree with your decision. You can always go back and teach that qualification is not going anywhere. And Dubai is certainly not going anywhere. Enjoy your time whilst you’re travelling and newly wed before kids🎉
