    Great video, nice to see time with family, good shooting too. My only surprise was you left the Bull with the hide on, and untouched until the next morning. My opinion your lucky it didn’t spoil. I lost one once, that I didn’t find till the next morning and it was 20f that night. I personally find that really disrespectful to the Elk, and a bad practice. If you can’t field dress alone, don’t pull the trigger. I’m not trying to be an ass, but that part of your video didn’t sit well with me. Otherwise, great job and congratulations.

      100% agree, as a butcher the animal needs to be in the cooler within 8 hours from death or its at a high risk of spoilage.

    WOW!!! Looks like to me you just shot two different bulls. First one was dragging his hind legs from a back spine shot. Second one was standing perfectly fine. What do I know.

      The rifle is a custom 300RUM built on an LPA Razor Ti action, 24" proof sendero carbon barrel, Hawkins bottom metal and mag, Ti Pro Titanium brake, Triggertech Special, Manners Long Rang Hunter stock with a custom Black, Gray and Zombie Green paint job, Nightforce NX8 4-32x50 scope, Hawkins lightweight one piece rings. Kysen Kissel at West Tech Arms in Rexburg Idaho put it together for me. He did an amazing job!

    very nice is this private land ??

    • @tetonrecon
      @tetonrecon  Před 4 měsíci

      No sir. This was all public land. It seems like there was a ton of game, but this is the highlights of 7 days. It felt like a lot harder hunt when I actually think back on all the days we didn’t see or hear anything at all.

      I 100% agree! It’s annoying. All the vertical footage was from my brother’s phone. He was doin it for the instagram reels. He’ll do better next time.

    Congratulation on the hunt, Im sure you have noticed that those are two different elk you shot.. You can see the bullet impact high and back on the fist one, breaking its back, it drags itself away using only its font legs they can go quite far this way. There is no way that after the shot the second one you film wound be standing relaxed like that if they were the same elk. The second elk you shot you hit in front of the shoulder, may also have broken the neck. I hope you were able to find the second elk and put your brothers tag on it. other wise it is a waste of a beautify animal. it is not that much harder to close 600 yards to 400 or even 300 yards. 300 yards is a far better range for most hunters to shoot at ethically, if you shoot at an appropriate range you should never miss and wound an elk like you did with the first shot. I hope you feel success , but I hope you think about the hunting as a craft and skill independent from shooting . Practice hunting and sneak in and get closer.

      @tetonrecon  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Jeff, thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. I gotta say your assumption that I shot two different bulls is pretty bold. You are correct that I hit him high (not far back) the first shot. As I said I was filming solo and I ranged him and calculated dope when he was coming down the hill toward me. From what I calculated later he gained about 35-40 yards on me which at that distance resulted in a hit about 10” above my intended placement, center of the lungs. When I spotted him on his feet again I was surprised of course. I quickly reviewed the previous footage on my phone and made sure he was the same 6x7 bull. I was sure at that point but continued to watch him until he stepped into the frame where you see the final shot. If you look closer at the second shot, when he falls u can see the blood on his back from the first shot. When we processed him we found that his back was broken but his spinal cord was still intact. He was badly hurt but not completely incapacitated. Also, in frame 23:52 of the film u can see the damage from the first shot. As you said, my second shot hit him high shoulder/ base of the neck (which was EXACTLY where I aimed) so there’s obviously two holes in him and I know how to shoot. I’ll show u the two slugs I dug out of him too if you’re still skeptical. I’m trying to be polite in my reply, but next time be more careful what you claim to be truth with your limited understanding.

      Thanks so much for getting back to me. I agree I could have chosen my words more carefully, as one should looking at such as small slice of what Im sure was an amazing hunt. I should have said " It really appears to me that you may have shot two different elk" even reviewing the footage it still gives that appearance. So I am truly relived that you retrieved to slugs. I have life time of elk hunting under my belt. I live where I can watch elk nearly every day I have a lot of experience. So I have at least a fair sized knowledge base to go on. I feel that one of the best things a platform like you tube can offer is it is place for hunters to share stories and learn from each other
      In all my time hunting ( and I have harvest an elk every year) I have never seen an elk that was hit as hard in the spine as the first shot appears, get back up and stand in a relaxed posture with no hunmping or shifting of the back feet. So I hope you will excuse my mistake.
      In hunting there is alway some thing to learn. As hunters I believe after caring for ourselves and the people we hunt with the next highest priority is to do every thing we can to ensure a clean ethical kill. It seems that because of huge improvements in optics many hunters keep pushing that range .
      Cleary you wish the first shot had hit better. Thank goodness you got the opportunity for a follow up shot. You don't alway get that gift.
      As fellow hunter, I encourage to you to reflect on what the ethical range is for you. In this video at 600 yard you had a %50 shot success. Nailing targets at 600-1000 yards at the range does not equate to ethical hunting distances. In my years of hunting I have rarely been unable to close the distance from 600 yards to 300. even if that means belly crawling through sage and snow. Also truly understanding your cartridge is important, Is iterating above 1900-2000 FPS out of your gun and has 1500 ftLBs at the distance you intend to shoot. All shots are effected by wind and atmospheric conditions, adrenaline, and being distracted by trying to film the hunt,. Im sure you are aware of all those things,Tthere has never been a hunt for me that i do not wish I had done some things differently sometime huge like wounding an elk. other small. Any how I appreciate you sharing you story this is how we learn and become better. only you get to determine what is " ethical for you" So wonderful you had an aging hunt with your family hunting with mine is one of the biggest joys of my year. I hope your elk is delicious, and it brings you joy with every bite=)

      I thought the same exact thing. No way that elk got back up after that 1st shot paralyzed his back. Then I saw the quartering out part. And you can clearly see the 2 shots on film. Nice work sir. Great job on verification before taking a 2nd shot.
      Make sure to practice these long shots during the off season. You have the tools and equipment to do the job. Just don't get to comfortable. And always practice.

      How is that side by side any different from a truck? Idaho has motorized rules for hunting. We never left the main roads with it. It was mostly just for having fun and glassing from the road for a closer elk that my dad could get to, which we didn’t find. He could have qualified for a handicapped permit and probably should have, but he felt that shooting from a vehicle just wasn’t sporting. It certainly didn’t help me find the elk I shot. I parked my truck and walked in a couple miles.
