  • We did a ton of scale detailing on the UDR, we even added an ESS Dual sound kit from Sense Innovations. The problem? I doesn't work. Let's see what we can do to get some sound out of this bastard. Enjoy!

    So I got a ess dual for my Losi LMT, hooked it up and nothing! Watched this vid, spent a few hours searching and so on. I swapped out the rtr radio it came with and put my DX5C with an SR310 rx and wham bam it works like it should! It has issues with the combo of SMART esc and SMART rx. Thank you for this video because it sent me in the right direction and not raging the damn thing. I only use SMART batts in my planes so im losing nothing including my mind.

    2 recommendations. First, I see you have a tiny lipo up front. For lights? Try using it to power your ess one. Next, I wired my traxxas sound to be powered by the extra servo port on the receiver. Bottom line, 11v is the max power the ess one can handle. I hope you get it to work, or just install the Traxxas oba. Those work great.

      The tiny battery is for the ESS, the lights run off the ESC. The OBA is the next step if the software update doesn't work. I have PLENTY of other rigs I can throw the ESS in. Thanks! -"Angry" Dave

    For anyone having trouble with spektrum esc.
    You can can use this sound box but you need to have a Dx5 and set it up to run mixing between the throttle channel and a spare AUX channel. The esc smart technology doesn't send the signal you need out through the throttle y splitter because of this the box won't work but if you assign the box to a aux channel that is mixed with the throttle channel the receiver will send the signal to the sound system and you can keep your stock spektrum electronics. Hope this helps some of you.

    I have some good news. I wrote back to Sense Innovations, this time I included the manuals to my radio, ESC and receiver. They sent me email back a couple of days later saying they studied the Smart Throttle (telemetry) problem and figured out a way hopefully solve it. They sent me a new firmware version 3.0.7 to test out with directions on how to upgrade. It worked great. Sound works the way it's supposed to with no interruption to the telemetry going to the radio. I asked if they would be posting the new firmware on their website. Waiting to hear back. BTW, the same problem exists with many of the light kits that use the throttle for reverse and brake lights. Hopefully those folks can take a lesson from Sense Innovations to get their stuff up to speed :)

    I ran into the same problem. I hooked it up to a Spektrum SR515 and couldn’t get into calibration mode. What i got back from Sense Innovation was that this receiver has sbus similar functionality, and that doesn’t seem to cooperate with the ESS Dual. So i connected it to a Futaba R617FS and it fired up directly.
    So i think the issue is in the Rx protocol. So now i’m searching for a Spektrum receiver without bus functionality...

    Get a low voltage receiver- Traxxas
    You will loose the gyro feature but the motor will work.
    The UDR receiver puts out high voltage because of extra features .
    The low voltage receiver is
    Not recommended for beginner drivers with UDR.
    It drives in pro mode no gyro assistance or telemetry access.

My problem is that when I give throttle I hear nothing but when I go in reverse the sound is there as if I'm going forward. When I got my radiolinkrcx8 I had to reverse channel two in order for car to move forward when pulling the trigger towards me and visa versa. I solved that problem however the dual sound unit only works in reverse [ no sound when truck is moving forward // sound of throttle when going backwards. @Tkilla77ffm Před 5 lety +2

    I tryed the combination too, but also didnt work.. i think the problem is, that the ESC and RECEIVER is communicating with each other (telemetry stuff), so the ESS soundmodul doesnt get a "clean" PWM throttle signal. thats also the reason why you cant enter the menu of the ESS, once connected and fired up in the rig (like connected to the programming USB dongle).
    Im using a TURNIGY remote system, so i use 2 receivers... one for the car and one for the sound module. not nice, but it works

    • @AngryDavesADULTRC
      @AngryDavesADULTRC  Před 5 lety

      I suspected something along those lines. The traxxas receiver works as long as I use another speed control. I thought about rigging it with a second ESC, but that requires another battery. I may try a second receiver now that you say that. If it doesn't work, I will probably just change the ESC. It costs more, but is less bull shit to do. Thanks for the comments. -"Angry" Dave

    • @Tkilla77ffm
      @Tkilla77ffm Před 5 lety

      On my TURNIGY GT5 i can use the 6ch receiver (with GYRO and telemetry for the rig) which is store in a model and use parallel a 4ch receiver (without telemetry). Maybe the TRAXXAS stuff dosent work that way. I think, changing ESC would be the best solution if you want to use the TRAXXAS remote.

    • @AngryDavesADULTRC
      @AngryDavesADULTRC  Před 5 lety +1

      Very likely. I'm going to try powering a second receiver from the battery port on the main one and binding both receivers to the same transmitter. This way the signal from the esc isn't getting there, but the throttle signal should come out of the 2nd receiver clean to the sound box. I can even eliminate the signal wire in the cable to ensure the 2nd receiver isn't getting signal, only giving it. This is the theory anyway. If it works, I'll do another video as I have seen other people with this issue and there is no clear fix. If it only takes a 2nd receiver and some creative wiring that could definitely be cheaper than anything else I can imagine. -"Angry" Dave

    Hey Mate i Know How You Feel.. & idk if you Fixed the Problem or Not? but I’ve had an ESS on a Similar System & I Found Out the Problem was with the Positive/Signal Wire Coming From the Esc to The ESS or It Was Positive/Signal Coming From the Receiver to the ESS (Sorry my Memory.. It’s Been Awhile Since I Did it..) But Anyways Check with a Multi-Meter the Voltage through those Wires & I Think You’ll Find There’s a Difference in Voltage, For Me There Was Just A Little Too Much Voltage Going to the ESS.. Anyways I Was Planning on Getting a Better Transmitter & Receiver So I Installed Them & Finally All Worked Fine! Because the New Receiver Put Out the Same Maximum Voltage the ESS Could Take Even Tho My ESC Was Running a Slightly Higher Voltage But That’s All it Took to Make it Annoying!.. Anyways Hope This Helps!. Take Care my Fellow Hobbyist & Keep the RC Hobby Alive!
    Oh I did Change the ESC at a Later Date too.. But if You Want to Keep ESC Then You’ll Need Ether New Receiver that Limits Voltage Output to Channels Or a Voltage Restrictor Cool?. Good Luck & All the Best!.

Where I've run into the issue is with smart ESCs that send telemetry through the throttle port on the receiver. It seems to mess with the ESS Dual's ability to get what it needs. You can can use this sound box but you need to have a Dx5 and set it up to run mixing between the throttle channel and a spare AUX channel. It seems like the ESS Dual needs specific ESCs to work. It needs an ultra clean input signal with no other interference. It works like crap with Traxxas stuff cause the ESCs talk to the receiver on the signal wire. That communication dilutes the throttle input signal so it works like shit or not at all. I see a lot of success with the Hobbywing 1080, and I'v seen success with high-end stuff like Tekin. Castle makes a lot of Traxxas' stuff so I'd be cautious. I had it working perfectly even with the Traxxas RX, but with a different ESC. I think the problem is partially with both components AND inconsistent. Some people only have to change the RX, some have to change the ESC, some have to change both. I think I'll try Max's idea of "throttling" the voltage so that it's the correct level. If that doesn't work, I'll install a Traxxas OBA system that works with their stuff and put the ESS in a trail rig. Thanks a shitload for watchin'! -"Angry" Dave

    of course traxxas doesnt acknowledge the ESS Dual sound device, why would they, its not produced or sold by them, they have nothing to gain by helping you with a product that they make no money on.

      You're right. But they'd be smarter to make sure the list of cons for new buyers is as short as possible. "Doesn't work with best sound kit on the market" is probably a deal-breaker for many people. -"Angry" Dave

      @@AngryDavesADULTRC a very large % of people change the stock electronics on their traxxas rigs, so the number of people with this issue is small enough that i dont think its hurts the brand. Also i would think itd be smart to take the time to do the research about an aftermarket item such as the ESS Dual and how will it works with your model before buying and installing. Proper research and diligence saves time, money and anger over issues such as this.

      Agreed, but I did that and came up with nothing. So I bought it. It even comes with TRX4 specific brackets. It is obvious now that the only way around is to buy another brand of ESC. That's unfortunate, because aside from this I have never had a problem with Traxxas electronics. My Traxxas vehicles all still have their original ESCs and receivers (servos are a different story). I guess that eliminates Castle also, because they make the ESCs in question for Traxxas. I guess it would be good to find out if they're spec-building Traxxas' stuff or just reskinning. If they're spec-building, the Castle branded stuff might be OK. Thanks for the comments, keep watching. -"Angry" Dave
