17th century mixed weapons sparring

- During our latest international trip we played a bit in an old castle with some weapons, proper for the period.
The Munich Town Guard is a custom made training weapon by BlackFencer (81 cm blade, 100,5 cm overall).
The rapier is a SIGI Forge fullered version that I am currently reviewing (101 cm blade, 124 cm overall).
Angel Chernaev is a historical fencing instructor from Sofia, Bulgaria.

That looked fun! And Black Fencer should really add the Munich Town Guard as a standard offering (although they would probably agree to make one upon request).
I guess if someone asks, they will make another one. It wasn't that much more expensive than their other complex hilted swords.

A single exchange with wrestling is usually more tiring for me than a minute of fencing at large distance.
Real nice demonstration of how a fight would look like. I do like that you didn't just break up when you got too close, but switched to a weaponized grappling. That's something most people can't do and get scared off, but will likely save your life, on the off chance that you get into that situation for real...
Thank you. Getting too close requires the active usage of the offhand and getting into grappling. While we still do a pretty limited amount of it, it's essential for the fuller understanding of swordplay.

It sure is.
Yes, I would classify it as a sidesword with complex hilt. Some places like to classify those as rapiers because of the guard type but for me it’s a sword.

I find it hilarious that the rapier was doing more cut and thrust fighting than the sidesword...with a Spanish rapier.
I don't know how you categorised a modern cup hilt training rapier as Spanish, but so what? Destreza is a cut and thrust system.
And sidesword systems are also cut and thrust.
Maybe throw away the myths you have started believing in and actually read the sources?
With 20 cm more blade he certainly prefers staying at distance for both cuts and thrusts. While I am trying to close in more and to grapple when able to.

It's an authentic sword.
I really like it overall and it moves quite nicely. Still a bit softer steel than I would like and it could really use one more steel bar on the handle for more protection as most originals have.
What is that side sword you're using?? Great video! It's so tough fighting against an opponent with a significant range advantage, you did really well to use the space and close the gap!

It is 21 cm shorter blade and 24 cm shorter overall.

Let’s call it average. I find it safe enough to play without restraints but still have it in mind to not go overboard in very close distance.
Looks great, nice filming. I'm using a sort of such weapon from time to time (an early Italian side sword, relatively short and wide, with almost same type of the blade and a hilt with the rings, but without handguard) against guys with the XVII century rapiers. Try to find a translations of Marozzo and Agrippa treatises (1536 & 1553), there are some hints about how to work against the longer and lighter blade. Generally - don't try to point the armed hand towards the enemy like holding a modern Olympic rapier ); this only gives him an advantage of the longer blade with a better covered wrist & hand; instead keep the armed hand more to the right side or even above the head, stay concentrated and parry his thrusts timely with the short "slaps" of your blade (it feels f*cking scary at first, but it works, I'm serious )); if parried ))) - bind a blades and proceed with the opposition, pressing his blade to the side, chasing him to break the distance and then stepping your left leg forward, catching his handguard with your left hand and slashing his face or thrusting a staccato to the throat. It's still very risky - but judging by my experience it works better then trying to fence with the heavy Vallon/ Bologna sword like a long rapier. Cheers from Russia, guys.
Thank you for your comment and feedback. Yeah this type of play can help and is certainly a useful way to approach it. Even with it though, the big length difference makes breaking distance even after a bind quite a challenge.
@Angel Chernaev - Historical fencing instructor - well, it looks like a whole lot of fitness - you have to literally run into him in something like a flash attack ) Precise timing needed: if you catch his attack, it's harder for him to retreat fast enough.
Seems like the Munich guy is used to wield a rapier, so many lunges that were lacking about 6 inches to touch :P

@@AngelChernaevHistoricalFencing definitely! Watching sparring or tournaments can get bland as it doesn't look flashy & often filmed poorly compaired to movie fights...but it shouldn't have to be. A more interesting setting, peroid costuming, or the like can take things to a new level by making the mood more cinematic.
@@asa-punkatsouthvinland7145 Yes, just tournament and sparring footage can get boring even for the people in it. Going for more interesting edits and filming is a nice break. It's just so much more time consuming :)

I tried to be in the early HEMA scene in the early 2000s. I went to a couple seminars but lack of money, personal issues, no HEMA group within 200+ miles of me, etc...well it didn't happen. I've practiced solo since then apart from a few short term sparring mates.
Then about 10 years ago my knees started going bad. I had my 1st knee replacement surgery a few months ago & there is a club about an hour from me I touched bases with some years ago but physically just couldn't at the time.
I hope after my 2nd knee replacement surgery I'll have enough money to be able to regularly attend meetings.
So even though I don't interact with HEMA folks in person much it's always nice to see videos of what others are doing, how things are getting interpreted, etc.
So what I'm getting from this is rapier > everything else lol
In such a “dueling enviornment” with a single weapon, no armour, plenty of space to move and playing to one hit - yep, pretty much. 20+ cm of blade is quite enough.

It’s a custom work so I don’t know if they would do it the same, but mine is 1280 grams.
Do the Thokks hold up well against the side sword?
For the most part yeah, but the wrist is a big weak spot. Some modifications are required. This sidesword is noticeably heavier and would cause problems in higher intensity.

Yep, on mine as well(on the thumb). We have massive issue with them.
That's duct tape on my SECOND pair, after the first fell apart in 3 months
I'm pretty sure there were bad batches. Some pairs seem to fall apart quickly but mine are still strong after 1 year of use (a minor scratch quickly repaired)
@@timhema5343 could be. But we got replacements and Bobo's second pair is also falling apart. We also have seen several pairs with Romanian fencers that lasted longer but also have massive issues now.
@@timhema5343 From what I hear, I'd say it's rather more accurate to say there might be some good batches. But we haven't gotten any of those...
Terrible editing. Sounds like a commercial. And with sparring videos, we want to see the action clearly. The constant change to fast forwarding or slow motion is confusing.
Oh well. Not a type of video for everyone. I have a bunch of sparring and tournament footage on my channel without such editing for people to watch.
