The Philosophy of Cynicism | 3 Important Life Lessons from Diogenes the Cynic

  • The Philosophy of Cynicism is probably the most fascinating in history. It was popularized by Diogenes, the cynic philosopher who took it to its logical extremes by living in a large ceramic jar in a market place, rejecting all the conventional desires that the society today are working so hard for, such as wealth, reputation, possessions, and fame. For them, the purpose of life is to live in agreement with nature, that the basic necessities in life are all we need to live and be happy. Cynicism and Diogenes don't have a written doctrine, but rather, they reveal it through actions.

    1) Stop caring about what others think of you
    2) Don’t take life too seriously, live it with humour/Laugh
    3) Happiness is always there, we’re just looking at the wrong side

I hate to be a cynic but this video hardly mentions Diogenes and trails off on a self-help tangent that is completely anti-thethical to everything the Cynics stood for.

Having a family full of narcissist who are two faced are good promoters of Cynicism. Irony is they don't even realize it because their blind to actions, but open to others opinion.

Diogenes cared about what people thought of him. He wouldn’t be living in the streets if he did. He lived in the streets to manipulate people’s opinion of him. People seeing him live in the streets was the main reason for him living in the streets.

I don't think that information is anything we could ever find as it seems that he didn't keep a record of himself, we are lucky enough to hear about him from others observing him (I think). We're very lucky to be able to find minds that give us clarity of truth. Good luck I search brother. (Or sister)

Usual misconception: the name of the group of philosophers called "cynic" comes from the word Kynosarges, which has been a nameplace in ancient Athens. Besides the school where the philosophers met, it had a gym that was the only one that could accept non-Athenians. Their initial name was "Antisthenic" from their founder Antisthenis.

I guess I'm like this man, I could care less what others think about me, other people's opinions of me mean nothing to me, anytime you are concerned with what others think of you, you are letting others define whom you are, a very ignorant concept to live by. It's wrong to call him dog when he lives naturally with nature as a human...the only real human in his eyes at the time was the one who could really live as nature intended. We consider him a dog because we as a collective think we are above nature even tho we all come from the same planet.

I find it somewhat cute, how so many of these philosophy (and psychology) CZcamsrs are in reality talking to themselves, convincing themselves. It's interesting how so many of them quote Marcus Aurelius, himself a perfect example of a fraud. Always worried - and not Stoic at all - he wrote to himself, the meditations - copy-pasted of real Stoics - the CZcamsr of his days.
