I finally dragged myself back home after a summer of adventure, and now it's time to face the music: the historic monsoon floods made a total mess at the compound, the fridge and washer were broken, and my sis had c0vid. Thankfully, we had two heroes step in to help us...and my empire is not laid to waste.

Due to a spelling error on one of my daughters birthday cakes, we now say Happy Birday. So HAPPY BIRDAY to you Sarah. Sometimes life's problems force us to stand where we are most uncomfortable and address the issues.

A lot of people don't install rain gutters along their roof edge out here. But when we do get a torrential rain, they can save you from water ponding along the side of the house and seeping in. Also, good for doing rainwater collection when it does rain. And the thousand year rain event is going to be far more common going forward. Weather patterns are changing as glacial melt puts more water into the global system. The storms are getting bigger and more frequent.
With gutters and a few barrels, you can collect a LOT of water during those rains. Water you can use for washing stuff, irrigation, house plants, etc. Just not drinking.
And I'm pretty sure they'll be less work that redoing the ground around the edge of the house.
I am glad to see your driveway suffered only moderate damage. Death Valley Life is a very interesting series. I bet other viewers feel the same.
That was an amazing, introspective, honest, touching birthday gift for all of us. So well done. You laid out your thoughts and let us in. I would very much enjoy watching any videos you make while building and fixing up. The travel videos are great of course and let me dream of traveling. But getting down to business and getting your place fixed up would be fantastic too!

You really have a wonderful place there. Many people would be thrilled to have it. Yes it needs a little fixing here and there but give it some time. Keep working with it and it will be the best home you ever had.
Your friends are right Huss; You need to make that quonset hut a work shop with a giant swamp cooler then learn how to use that welder. From there you'll be able to build out the whole compound the way you've envisioned it.
Here’s a tip for the contractors. That dungeon (submarine room) has a wall that has a side that is high up on the property, I think. Take the CMU’s out and reframe it and put an elevated deck outside and have a wonderful work space with lots of light. Maybe even a pathway around to the upper compound. Thoughts?

That's when you make a house a home. You might want to add french drains to divert the water away from your driveway. The stones will help with erosion and slow the flow. But you shouldn't flood again.

I wish you could install some big ass solar panels on the roof of the new patio you are constructing. This is my favorite time of the year in CA high desert not to hot not to cold. Cheer up buddy you have some awesome family and friends that obviously love you very much! Every house needs a garage area to keep all the tools and stuff you need to maintain your home and property not to mention simple car maintenance and repairs it just never ends and the more you learn to do yourself the better off you are as nothing ever gets cheaper.

Insurance claims to deal with flooding damage.
The backhoe on the tractor can trench a slot to put drain pipes.
The roof should have eave troughs, that have drain pipes, to get the rain water away from the house walls.
Wow!! That has to be one of the best videos you've done. I don't know how many I've seen and I've certainly got some favorites even going back many years. But that one seriously got to me. 8:03 Please don't remove the berm. It likely was put there for a good reason. If you remove it, water will likely pool up against the side of the house and cause much more damage. Improve it, but don't remove it.
The berm needs to be shaved down and gently slope away from the foundation. You can't stop water, you can only divert it.
@@jeffkettler4712 That would be a very good idea. But if they just dig it all out, they are going to get water in their house. Look at that drainage down the hillside in the back. If they are not careful, the water will come down that hillside and flow right into the side of their house. It looks like the berm was put there to channel that water away from the house. They need to be very careful what they do with that.
Rain gutters would probably help a lot.
I was going to post this. You ALWAYS want the soil built up so it slopes away from the house. Even more important when you have a basement. If all they got in a "1,000 year" rain was a damp rug, I wouldn't touch it.

I was in a flood at Whitewater State in Mn in the 1960's that was described as a once in 100 year event by the State Park naturalist, The same thing happened later in the same week at the same Park. So my advice to you and your sister is to take steps that make sense to mitigate any damage to your property before the next flood happens .

Happy birthday! I saw the One Shot sign paint. A distant relative was a sign painter. Lettered cars, trucks, store fronts etc. I have some of his paint cans. They way it works. Even 30 years. It forms a skin. Skin gets thick. Still, cut it out. A little thinner. It’s good to go. As for life. I live in SWFL. Hopping for the best.

Somehow I didn’t focus on the water intrusion. If the build changed the exposure of the wall, great. I noticed that with the blocks following the wall, even with gaps between the blocks, the extremely heavy rain could have gotten trapped between the wall and blocks. Just taking one or two away would allow for the water to drain and not back up. If not the blocks it may even be the earth berm on the outside.
Btw, it’s not always but there are times when I come back to a movie called Ground Hog Day with bill Murray. Sometimes I get stuck in past events but try to make my way through it to experience better times. I try to work through the problems to have a wonder-ful life to experience in the future. Sometimes I get despondent when things don’t work out and even feel like giving up but when I quit focusing on myself and turn my attention to the beautiful thing(s) in front of me I again begin to believe that it’s possible to fulfill the dreams I have inside. Just a thought, who was around 1,000 years ago keeping track of the once in a 1,000 year flood?😆😎🥂 I lived on Eastern and Russell, across the street from Redd Foxx. Across from both of us was Giuseppe's pizza and I'd see him often there and he wouldn't let you pay for your Pizza. One time I got there early and paid Redd's bill with $300 just to be safe. He was a humble man and a friend. I miss him. Yeah, Vegas isn't home. I was the Sous Chef at Lady Luck Casino's Burgundy room...it's totally transitory. 2 1/2 years and I beat feet back to Utah. Cheers, from an old school Army Veteran, biker and most importantly, grandpa to 19 grandchildren... 🇺🇸

We were all programmed in childhood that our birthday is a unique and incredibly special cause for celebration, all because of only how special we are , so you will never really shake a certain amount of conflicted feelings when you are an adult and nobody looses their mind in a fit of happy skipping whistle party celebration, as befits a special person of your personal stature, and you realize we all have things to do.
besides, you will always be ahead of regular folks , because of those eyes, the window to the soul, that will never wear the tattered clothing of old age that we all must bear at some future time. Additionally, intelligence , age, and experience creates wisdom, so it all kind of works out.
Additionally , you have gifted me, thank you. Because I look to your videos for instruction on how to do this stuff well. You can make an extraordinary entertainment out of nothing much special, which is bound to help me, as I learn little enhancements to video story telling from watching your videos.
I have thought for a long time that I would make a video journal for my family , as I travel up the coast on highway one to visit the redwoods .and locations enjoyed in my youth. there are bound to be a lot of contrast in my experiences from then to now, that could be interesting if told well. I also hope to get up above tree line , so I can once again feel the sprits in the wind that somehow informed me as a young man , and view the high mountain rock formations that are said to be the bones of the earth.

I was born and raised in Vegas and for some of us it isn't superficial. I don't live there anymore, but there's nowhere else that I feel most myself than Vegas. It's a special place.
I saw that both Cerro Gordo and China Ranch Date Farm also had their roads washed out by the monsoon. Hopefully everything is back to normal now or will be real soon for everyone.
