I would never give up my double, extra-deep, stainless steel undermount sink. While prepping a meal, I can put used bowls and utensils in one side and still have a clean, hygienic sink on the other side for washing vegetables. Much better for safe food handling without cross-contamination.

Disagree with “open shelves” remaining popular. As the reality of reduced storage in exchange for dusty shelves, dusty contents and (often) cluttered appearance kicks in, you will see a cabinet comeback. In fact, it’s already here.

I have one area with 4 open shelves near the stove. It’s out of view because fridge hides it from rest of the room. It only has dishes and glasses we use every day, but there’s just two of us. Might not work for family of four. I love the convenience. And because the dishes are constantly in use, they are constantly cleaned.

Mark, I agree with everything you said except open shelving & blue cabinetry. Open shelving gets nasty fast not just dust, but also oils & greases from cooking. Then there is blue cabinetry. It can be boring ten times faster than good old neutral & natural colors in a kitchen. Give me my maple cabinets any day in the week. Just wish there was a good reliable way to refresh their natural finish that doesn't strip the beauty. As for pantries: they have been important since centuries long ago. Root cellars, cold cellars were the ancestors of pantries. In the past ie. the 16th & 17th centuries people did canning of eatables to store for when the fresh fruits & vegetables were not in season. My Big Mama did this back in the 1950's. Thus a 'pantry,' is nothing new, but is VERY desirable.

I do get tired of cleaning the tops of my cabinets though. Also, there is molding at the ceiling that I'm not sure that I want to lose. Nothing special about it other than I like it.
As far as the pantry, I would definitely like a walk-in but don't have the room for one. Current pantry is basically a small coat closet. I keep thinking of replacing it with pantry cabinetry with pull out shelves.

The best way to safeguard earth's natural resources and forests is to NOT remodel kitchens every 10-15 years. IMO, kitchens should last for decades, yet homeowners today keep wanting to tear everything out just bc they think a particular look is no longer trendy, thus costing themselves tens of thousands of dollars, and putting yet more material into the landfill.
Most of your comments were about the "look" of the kitchen only; not until the very end did you bring up functionality as the key ingredient.
Many 2021 photos and design ideas appear to require square footage far in excess of what an average home can give. They're gorgeous, but my kitchen is a good, practical size, yet is a fraction of the size of those huge kitchens.
I have pullout shelves and drawers on my lower cabinets. Those should be mandatory for every kitchen; they're the best!

I think you are right, we need to chill out on having to remodel every time something new comes around.
This is a "trends" video so yes I do focus on the look. The theme across my channel is function, as it is the most important part of the kitchen.

Currently remodeling our kitchen: doing deep blue/teal cabinets and incorporating dark walnut accents for the island top and a couple open shelves. Feeling at least a little justified now with my choices. Adding a little retro though in our backsplash with some penny round accents and actually considering a fun but subtle linoleum pattern for the floors. I think it's important to keep with current trends, but also add a little of you in there. If it were up to me my kitchen would be completely done up like a 40s kitchen but my designer helped reign me in a little!

Open shelves only look nice if you have lots of storage to hide what you don't want to look at and have beautiful plates and glassware to put on them. Otherwise, they can look cluttered and junky and everything on them gets dusty and grimy from grease very quickly.

Mark, love your videos! When we purchased our house, I knew at some point I wanted the tongue and groove maple cupboards gone - dark and depressing, and although plenty of storage space, some areas required you being a contortionist to access- how is that helpful? IT ISN'T. We gutted and replaced with white cabinets, and distressed white brick walls, soft close hinges (worth every penny) and added an island with storage on each end. Our microwave is located in cabinetry beside he frig and below the coffee maker - located close to the table (eat in kitchen, no dining room) We planned literally for MONTHS before we took on the project. For me, I wanted everything easily accessible, tons of light, and a very clean uncluttered look- mission accomplished! We only have 3 upper cupboards :) Tearing out the soffit, and keeping the cupboards lower (horizontal opening cupboards) made the space look massive.

Amen. Anything you have on an open shelf will have to be washed BEFORE you can use it! Just more work, dusting, using spray cleaner on shelf (It's in the kitchen and grease will settle:) I'd say if you just gotta, just have a couple of shelves with some decorative objects, a couple of trailing ivy plants, etc., that would not have you struggling with cleaning day to day. Don't put food dishes or glassware on the shelves!

Sometimes suggestions even goes in opposite directions, for example we usually make upper cabinets lower that sealing to make beautiful shadow gap on the sealing and avoid feeling that sealing pushing you down. Its not that bad. You have to dust maybe once a week and it takes like 1 minute. You have to dust alot of other surfaces too so it wont really be that horrible if you dont mind a tiny bit more cleaning. And when it comes to keeping it looking styled. Its not that hard if you dont keep too much stuff up there and youre mindful to place back everything to its spot.

Extending a solid surface counter in a waterfall is definitely practical - have you seen the beating that kids and dogs can do to cabinets? And this is usually a part of the cabinet that is visible to the rest of the space! Wish I had one!
It is too bad a about natural maple. My favorite kitchen in the world was one that had modern natural maple cabinetry with clean white counters. Food looks awesomely fresh with that backdrop, and it makes for a light, fresh, warm and sunny space. It is also a design that made the white appliances look intentional instead of "just builders' grade." That kitchen also had soffits that came down to meet the top of the cabinets - not as elegant as cabinets soaring to the ceiling, but very affordable at that stage of our life, and no dusting needed up above!
When will they do solid-surface niches with grow lights tucked in - so people can have their herbs and greens close at hand?

First off, thank you for the great video! But, saying a single bowl sink is more "in" is fine, but saying it's more practical is just silly. The divider serves a purpose. Also, the farmhouse sink trend is on its tail end now; I'd suggest undermount for a more timeless option.

Under mount sinks have the HUGE advantage of being able to just swipe debris or crumbs into the sink. No trim to get caught on. No collection of water on the counter.

@@MTKDofficial I've had to swap out brand newly added, high end single bowl sinks for doubles a few times already. In a nutshell, people want to have someone (other than a countertop) to place their clean dishes once they're washed, to dry off. Even when you use a dishwasher, oversized pots and pans typically need a place to both be washed, and somewhere to dry. Single bowl doesn't give you that luxury.

Lighter cabinets and just a darker island but I still like matching cabinets but then break it up with wooden floating shelves. I love white cabinets and it brightens up a kitchen. Dark cabinets looks dead and dull. I do love waterfall cabinet in the kitchen. I love walk-in storage kitchen closet for storage.

Hey MaryAnn. Thanks for the input and taking the time to comment.
I've always loved white kitchens too.

Personally I like large double sinks because I prefer a separate sink to rinse whatever I am washing particularly large baking trays, pans and pots. Also I have a friend in London who has a Smallbone kitchen which has an island with a large wooden surface with a slot in the top where you can push the veggie cuttings into a removable bin located in a cupboard under the surface so you don’t have to carry a cutting board full of bits across the floor to a trash can. To keep the wood surface sanitary she uses a smaller cutting board for the actual chopping. For people like myself who do a lot of food prep and cooking it is very convenient.

I agree. When is comes to food prep and especially chopping, wooden surfaces are really great. Thanks so much for the comment!

Hey! Thanks for the comment. The open shelves get a lot of heat these days. People either love em or hate em. ha.

I like the look of one large sink. we have the builder grade two sinks. My husband prefers it I think because he can put the dirty dishes in one and still have the other free to use the water. Of course a prep sink would be nice to have too. I like the look of the open shelves, but everything has to match and keep tidy to make it look pretty. Although most of my cabinets are very tighty and organized I have several that are not like where I keep my vitamins.

Farm sinks suck, that is my opinion of course, I dealt with one years ago. I also dealt with open shelves, it is a lot of extra work to ensure the dishes are always set up as a display, your dishes also need to be display quality that coordinates with your kitchen. To each their own.

I do like finishing cabinets to the ceiling, but I would recommend people not just get 42” uppers because the doors can warp a little.

I just started my research into building a new home and can honestly state that of the 10 trends you state, the only one I agree with is the use of reclaimed wood.

Get ready for a huge price tag. Reclaimed wood is extremely expensive. Often triple the cost. And many cabinet shops, like mine, refuse to use it.
