  • Zenyatta rewrote Thoroughbred racing history in 2009 by beating an all-male field to become the first filly ever to win the Breeders' Cup Classic. Honored as 2010 Horse of the Year at the Eclipse Awards, Zenyatta won 19 consecutive races in her 20-race career. Along the way, she became an inspiration to people near and far, many of whom had no previous interest in horse racing.
    Zenyatta is an impressive physical presence. She stands 17.2 hands high (70 inches from the ground to her withers). The length of her stride was measured at 26 feet, equal or greater than Secretariat's. At Del Mar in 2009, she was clocked at 40 miles per hour.
    Zenyatta is now in the fourth year of her career as a brood mare at Lane's End Farm in Woodford County. She recently delivered her third foal-and her first filly-on April 20, 2014.
    Zenyatta is a horse for the media-savvy era: She has her own website and Facebook page. Her owners, trainers, and handlers encourage her fans to consider themselves a vital and valued part of "Team Zenyatta."

    A big girl....bigger than most males...standing 17.2 hands...and as gentle as a lamb...she loves people, especially children. Ann Moss simply said....” she is gentle because she chooses to be.”
    She truly is… “The People’s Horse”.

    As a struggling New Californian, looking to adopt an OTTTB,... I kept seeing the name Zenyatta, a horse I never heard of coming from Florida. Wow ! When I started investigating I could not believe such a big horse and so fast ! And her style of racing , so phenomenal. It became a daily after work mantra to watch Zenyatta., and get happy! Her story gave me hope and changed my life, my outlook. And would you believe , the grace of god was on me ... because while I was shopping for my own horse, this unbelievably beautiful and smart gelding, really jumped out and moved out at me. The first thing I thought was he must be related to Zenyatta! And he is! Son of Street Boss...loves to jump, super smart and big personality. He is a gift. And kind. Wow. Dreams do come true. His name is “Street Dance.”

    I fell in love with her before I knew anyone else loved her. I've just been watching horses again here in 2020. I thought I was the only one who thought she was awesome until I had been watching racing on you tube for a week. And I swear I was wondering what was going on with me. Knowing she does this to other people made me feel a little less crazy. Wish I had a chance to see her in person.

    You couldnt have had a better trainer for Zenyatta than John Shirreffs. Hes great at what he does, but cares about his horses as if they are family.
    I think this story is that much more sweet because of him, as opposed to Zenyatta possibly being trained by other great trainers with HUNDREDS of horses in their barns. John has a small number of horses he trains and cares for. I like that Zenyatta was one of them.

    • @jamesonsix19
      @jamesonsix19 Před 8 lety +5

      +Jason Corona No one could say that for sure, not saying she could or couldn't but Zenyatta is a very rare horse personality wise. Most horses when urged run as fast as they can, Zenyatta was different she ran just fast enough to win. Also, I do know most horse racing experts attribute "stride length" as one of if not the most important attribute when describing and recognizing the fastest ever and the greatest, and Zenyatta's stride length was over a foot longer than Secretariats (and that's been measured by the most advanced and accurate technology that existed in 2010). So running just fast enough to stay ahead of any horse that challenges you is something that takes an outstandingly fast horse to be able to just put enough into staying just ahead of their opponent, because if you misjudge your opponents speed and your own you might not have enough speed to recover. She literally had enough speed to overcome anything thrown at her. It's hard to explain easily but basically it takes a fast horse to beat their opponent by large margins but it takes a super horse to be able to repeatedly win but put just enough effort to stay just ahead with the confidence that no matter what the other horse throws at it, it's got them handled. Just think about it in drag racing terms if you have 2 fast cars going to race at a rolling start even if you have a faster car if the other car takes off just a little earlier the ground is hard to make up and it takes a car so much faster to overcome that. The amazing thing about Z is I'm pretty sure we saw her run full speed one time in her 20 race career and that was her last race when no one thought she could recover from such a horrible start and horrible luck and yet made a run down the stretch that had even the biggest "Zenyatta Hater's" with their jaw dropped in shock.

    • @teej783
      @teej783 Před 7 lety

      You cannot use logic and reason with some people. Their opinions are like their religion. Horses don't understand track records. They race the horses that start with them. Man O' War had a 28 foot stride but he was shorter than Zenyatta. It would be nice to see the foals that could come from that combination. Secretariat was very similar to Man O' War. Both had the same nickname of "Big Red" in different eras.

    So you retire them to what.. horses need us and they need us especially horses like Zenyatta to ride them even in retirement.. they are bright... look at how they race and we take that away from them and put them to pasture.. throw them away. Ride them teach them other things... not competitive but why they can be so clam in a crowd before a race do you get how amazing that is. Then you think you are helping them by leaving them to pasture, Shame on you.... they are here for us and these amaxzing horses work and they need new work... just ride them...play race.. teach them new things ... they desever more than to be put out to pasture. From Donna owned my first horse at 12 and know them well...

    People really really struggle to understand just how unintelligent horses are. a 15 year old horse, doesn't have the intelligence of a 6 month old kitten by they think 8 times. So a 6 month old kitten is smarter than THE most intelligent horse. Just because they're so beautiful, why do we have to add things to them we know aren't true? They're one of the if not THE ost unintelligent animals humans have regular contact with
