I have spoken with a number of Welk orchestra alumni over the years. And they all concurred that Welk was indeed fully aware of the meaning of the song's content and pressed ahead accordingly. For those who like to pigeonhole and dismiss out of hand based on their limited understanding, bear in mind that Welk began with a small jazz band in the 1930s that pursued hard bop, and that his long running television series featured rock and roll prominently in its first couple of seasons. At least HE was open minded about diversity of genre.....

Lawrence Welk was obviously diverse in his musical taste, and his vast recorded legacy substantiates that assertion decisively. Interesting that those of the hippie era in which Brewer And Shipley availed themselves find it hard to be as open minded as he was.......

these performers were musicians. Of course they knew! Just because these cats played in the LW Band didn't mean that is what they listened to at home. Or that they didn't go to smokey jazz clubs to play music that interested them. They were having fun with the audience.

WTF? This song is about drugs, especially marijuana. A "Toke" is a puff from a marijuana cigarette or pipe. Tom Shipley explained: "When we wrote 'One Toke Over the Line,' I think we were one toke over the line. I considered marijuana a sort of a sacrament... If you listen to the lyrics of that song, 'one toke' was just a metaphor. It's a song about excess. Too much of anything will probably kill you."

Like too much pandering to pop culture? ABC cancelled the show after this season (though Welk kept it going another decade in syndication). The cancelation was part of a change that swept the networks, known as the rural purge.
