I talk at the start about some Irish history to give a context of why our modern coins start in 1928. Feel free to skip it if you just want to see the coins!!!! 😅
15:39 half crown is 2/6 (coq. They name it as 2 and a 6 or two six ) Cus half crown is 2 shillings and 6 pence While a crown is 5 shillings Half pound is ten shillings
Did enjoy the video, I know you wanted to keep it simple, but as just you were 9 when the euro came in I was 15 when we went decimal. Children had no issue with £ s. d. (farthings were last minted in 1966) but I never saw one in circulation. Simple, a big bar of Cadbury was 6d, four black jacks were a 1d (previously a 1/4d each) we knew what we could buy, had no bother working it out! The £ s d system came about in 800 ad whereby Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire decreed that 240 silver pennies would weigh a pound. Before calculators this made sense as 240 was the first composite number i.e. a number that could be divided by 20 other number without the need for fractions. 100 can only be divided by 8 numbers. At 1:56 Henry V111 was the first to use the Harp on a 1534 Groat of 0.842 fine and second issue was 0.758 fine and couldn't be used in the UK. At 5:44 unaware of the 2 euro for the 1st Dail Thanks for that. At 16:49 the 1966 10/- was too similar in size to the 2/- and was called the barmaids folly it was nice coin of 0.833 silver At 19:23 the 1/2p (1/200th of a Punt) was the smallest decimal coin and in 1971 the 1/2d was the smallest (1/480th of a Punt) the change in value from 240 pennies to 100 pence did create some inflation. Everything was rounded up not down. At 19:51 the 2p coin, I have an 1988 UNC in cupro nickel there are a few about but not worth a huge amount.
22:48 whereas in the UK the made their first ever pound coin or the nugget back in 1983 By 1988 no English one pound can be accepted from daily transaction but in jersey guernsey Gibraltar and Scotland we still hold on to pound notes up till to this day counterpart with pound coin
Hyunjin Lee, I love the pound note. When I lived in London, even though the pound note itself is long gone, it remains there in some turns of phrase: "I've gotta earn a Pound note", some English lads often say. Of course I imagine they mean 'a few Pounds'. But I like the turn of phrase.
I am from Northern Ireland and i remember the old Irish coins well from cross border trips in the 90s we used to take the old irish 50p coins and put them in the vending machines across the border in Northern Ireland (of course before our own 50p coins were shrunk by the UK government)
Hello Kevin, due to the fact, that the British decission to shrink the size of the 50 p coin was made in the second half of the 1990s, it is financial wise, not to change the size of the Irish 50 p coin. At this time, the Euro-countries has started the change to the Euro coins - for example there were no German coins released into circulation after 1995.
@@AllanRadko German definitiv DM-coins after 1995 are only issued in collector sets and are therefore NIFCs. Nevertheless, there were commemorativ coins issued during this time. Even if these coins aren't normally used in daily life, there were legal tender.
20:28 same with British 5 p and 10 p Back on 1990 and 1992 (respectively) and later on they reduce the size of 50 p back on 1997 I believe there two version of 50 p in 1997 the larger ones and the small current ones
The decimalisation of the Irish pounds follows the decimalisation of Pound Sterling They’re both decimalised their money on the 15th February 1971 The re-sized their 10p and 5p on 1990 The difference is when the UK resized their 50p Ireland didn’t followed Since Ireland was preparing themselves to accept the new money the euro Back on 1st January 1999 all bank and digital transactions are tagged in euro When 1st January 2002 euro was use in Ireland together with Pound Irish And the Irish Pound officially withdrawn from circulation on 28th February 2002
Very cool - full of info vivid from you Kevin - always wanted to gather some Irish coins ( have a couple with fish image though:) and you showed all - well done::)
I actually bought a Elk punt from a friend over here in America. I don’t know where he got it he doesn’t know either but I still bought it for 10 dollars or 8.50 euros.
20 Irish Pence was introduced on 1986 whereas 20 British Pence was introduced on 1982 4 years later Ireland follows But the official conversion of half crown coin is 12.5 pence
also like the £1 coin they are in different sizes due to the fact that in 1979 the punt and sterling droped the peg of 1=1 and Ireland after wanted to distance its self from the UK coins
Great video pal. I'm a relatively new coin collector but my favourites are the Irish coins. When I look at the two pence coin with that very intricate celtic design, it is quite something. You've done a great job in presenting our monetary heritage here. You have a new, avid subscriber 👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video well enough to subscribe to me!!! The old Irish coins are really great, hoping to buy more soon......maybe start an Irish date run of coins from 1928 onwards.
Does anyone know a good place where you can buy pre-euro coins from Europe? They're a bit hard to find for other countries now that they're out of circulation.
But do Ireland have a special like collector annul sets (whether silver or not or gold or whatever) commemorating the Decimal Day Cus UK does but I don’t know in Eire I wish you gave mate I really love predecimal and pre euro Irish money though it gives me a lot of headache when I’m trying to add up them I feel idiot when summing up 3 or maybe 17 half crowns then there are 46 florins and I got 28 shilling and 567 farthing
I do have some British coins but not really enough for a video, they are mostly modern anyway...... There are plenty of British cointubers who deal with them anyway!!! 😂

Oh yeah, because for ages they would have been the same size and shape 😅
Really interesting video!!! Thanks for the explanations 😁

21:41 really I thought I was firstly introduced on 1983 same with 20 p in the UK
also like the £1 coin they are in different sizes due to the fact that in 1979 the punt and sterling droped the peg of 1=1 and Ireland after wanted to distance its self from the UK coins

Ebay might be your best option.... Or a coin/collectible/antique store 😬
I have for sale bags contacting me
Very good video. I would suggest brushing up on your Gaeilge though.
But do Ireland have a special like collector annul sets (whether silver or not or gold or whatever) commemorating the Decimal Day
Cus UK does but I don’t know in Eire

No, Ireland didn't release a special set of coins this year to mark the 50th Anniversary of Decimal Day 😬
@@EireEuroCoins sadly Ireland forgot already the previous money
Resizing the 50p (UK) was on 1997
Then £1 (UK) coin was firstly introduced on 1983 while Ireland introduced their £1 on 1990 there are 7 years gap
23:25 20 years gap
Do you have a video for British pound coins 😳
I do have some British coins but not really enough for a video, they are mostly modern anyway...... There are plenty of British cointubers who deal with them anyway!!! 😂
