  • Himalaya: "Lukla" World's Most Dangerous Airport. Located at 9,000, incredible short, the runway is steeply inclined so the planes can get enough speed to take off. Often closed and even when open, it's only safe-ish a few hours a day.

@@brianwood7480like you could do it buddy. There’s no simulator for these; maybe in flight school there’s a bit of training for checklists and procedures on some flight sims, but most of this is done in the air with the instructor to get a certification. And then every time you have to fly in focused, follow proper checklists, and do everything correctly because if you mess up, there are no second chances. So before you criticize this job from your sofa, think about the sacrifices and focus these pilots have to make. Simulators are no real life. Good for procedures, yes, but the real pressure is never gonna be there in simulators.

The flights are continuous while the weather is clear- about a 4-5 hour window in the morning. But sometimes no window so no flights that day. On my way out there had been no window for 2-3 days and about 100- 150 people were backed up. The planes just kept coming back from Kathmandu empty until the backup was cleared.
There had been a wreck the day I hiked in from Yamse Bazzar. A Sherpa pilot lost his way into the Yamse Bazzar air port and nose planted his Pilatus airplane into the side of the mountain.
