  • Here we show how the sgraffito design is revealed. The drawing is first protected with lacquer so that it does not rub off. We then rub the corners of the frame with steel wool to remove some gold. The red bole comes out and contrasts with the gold of the sgraffito. The entire frame is later sealed with lacquer.

@gorillalipstick No, we use a concentrated lacquer that is diluted with thinner. It's a thin coat but takes time to dry. The video is edited from one day to the next. We never spray and nothing needs to be washed off.

Ohhh do tell what materials you are using.. is that gold leaf under the lacquer? I thought you scratch the image out? I’m confused? Can you list the steps?
Absolutely stunning piece of art!! Beautiful!!
Dying to try this but I don’t know where to begin..
they have a lot of videos on ceramic sgraffito.. but I only found two frame videos and it looks like they are different techniques.. pretty please list your materials and steps involved. I want to try on a much smaller scale as I am a beginner to the sgraffito but not new to creating beauty. Thank you so much for posting this video!!

This is a different type of technique. It's not a scratching technique. It's more like incising. The drawing is made with a normal ball point pen. It's then sealed with lacquer. Once dry the rest of the gold is rubbed with 0000 steel wool. The lacquer preserves that part of the drawing and you see the contrast. The materials are basic framing materials. Bass wood, gesso, clay, 22k gold leaf. and the lacquer. It takes practice of course.

Wow, it really is amazing to watch!! I am in love with your expertise and how easy you make it seem..( I know full well it is not!)
So forgive my naive questions in advance..
So you gesso and lay the bole and then gold leaf and then the laquer..
At what stage do you put the inscribing with the ball point pen( and just out of curiousity... could you engrave with a graver.?)
And did you laquer the entire frame or just the designs?( was that the clear liquid I see you painting the designs with)
And lastly, just to try and understand before I make a fool of myself at trying this..
If it is the laquer that you were painting on the designs.. is that why that part dulled a little more as to give the contrast.. and if so does that mean you don't laquer the entire frame or better question, if you do what is makes only those designs the different contrast as opposed to the whole frame .what step am I missing?
So you have video of the beginning with you doing the inscribing?
I want to learn this so badly but I am sure you are very aware... people like you are few and far between.,, thank you so much for your reply to my first question(s) lol
And I hope to hear your answers to my next hundred. Haha
Hope you can even understand what I was trying to ask not knowing all the technical terms.
Where are you guys located.?( east coast?)
      Do you ever do seminars?
