    It can be confusing what drinks mess up your intermittent fast. But a general rule is any liquid with calories can knock you out of the fasted state. In this video, I will go over what the fasted and fed state is and what liquids are ok to drink while fasting.
    In addition, I will go over some gray areas about certain drinks that do have some calories but are still good to drink while fasting.

    I've been "intermittent fasting" for the last 30 years because I never eat breakfast and was told I was missing the most important meal of the day from everyone. I'm glad I didn't listen and ate when I was hungry (which was lunch time, except for my black coffee)

    Thanks man. I was wondering about Matcha specifically since its the plant matter itself and has 3 calories per cup. I guess that would probably not spike insulin?

    Good tips here. I am trying so hard to like black coffee. Unfortunately I can't do any artificial sweeteners I tried it for about a month and my weight loss stalled.

      I didn't like coffee until I was in my 30s...Now I can't live without it. Take a sip every now and then and see if you can acquire a taste for it.

    are Glucagon and Glycogen the same thing?

      Hey Gokul, Glucagon is a hormone that does the opposite of insulin. It tells the liver to convert glycogen to glucose to be released into the bloodstream. When elevated, it can also help you burn fat too.
      Glycogen Is the storage form of carbohydrates in your muscles and liver.

    Hello mike..how about coffee wth out sugar and cream but i will add 1tbsp of virgin coconut oil is that allowed?

      Hi Bubet, That's a little bit of a gray area. 1tbsp of virgin coconut oil is about 40 calories. It somewhat will start your digestive system but should not spike your insulin.... I personally drink my coffee black.
      I read a couple of David Asprey's books... Bulletproof Diet and Head Strong and he would say it's OK and he would recommend it.
      I would experiment with it and see what works for you.

    I have one question if I do fasting for 16 hours if I do for 14/15 hours will it help me?

      Hi Vinayak, Yes 14 or 15 hours is good too. I think anything over 12 hours will give you benefits....Dr. Valter Longo talks about the benefits of fasting for 12 hours in his book The Longevity Diet.

    Hi! I saw your knowledgeable comments on Jillian Michaels super biased intermittent fasting videos. I started 20:4 10 days ago and have lost 6 pounds already. I’m planning on losing a total of 53 pounds to reach my prebabies weight. I’m having a surgery in two weeks and am concerned about healing while only eating one meal a day. Do you think I can still heal properly with my body feeding off of stored fat?

      Hi, Congratulations for losing the 6 pounds.
      As long as you eat enough calories I think you will be ok but check with your doctor and see what they recommend. Don't feel bad if you have to stop IF for a week or two...just go right back on it once you get your strength back.
