Tips from someone who writes orchestral music for a living:
1: dont have your staccato pattern in the same range as your chord pads so it doesnt get muddy.
2: Strings sound best playing nice, big spread chords (take a regular chord and movebthe 3rd up an octave, so its spelled root-fifth-third). I like to have cellos divided on the root and fifth and violas on the third, then have basses double the cellos an octave below.
3: If you want some extra warmth, add trombones and/or low woodwinds (bassoon, bass clarinet) playing the chords in a normal closed voicing (root-third-fifth). Gives you nice resonance to thicken stuff up.
4: Not every instrument needs to be playing something different. My favorite thing about writing for orchestra is that you can double parts on different instruments to create a completely new sound (think of it like layering synths). Some of my favorite doublings are Cellos and Horns together on a melody, Trumpets and Flutes together with a Piccolo on the octave above, and Violas and Clarinets. Woodwinds are especially nice for doubling parts that need to be a but louder, because they have a very pure sound that reinforces the fundamental without adding alot of extra overtones. If you have a violin melody that you need to be louder, adding oboes or flutes doubling it is a great way to reinforce it.

Lets say E minor.
For the last chord, you want it to lead nicely back to the first chord (Em.- E G B). B minor is the v chord in Em. (Bm - B F# D).
In classical music, they like the major V chord B major- B- B F# D#, because that D# reaaaaaly wants to go back to E, whereas the D doesnt really care where it goes.
To hear this in action, listen to the Andalusian cadence. (Em, D, C, B) and compare it to Em, D, C Bm

@@bobwilkinsonguitar6142 Essentially, you've formed a standard B dominant chord in E minor. Virtually no music piece in the world excludes the V - I progression. I believe using B dominant in the first inversion brings us closer to what he means. Not that yours is wrong, but I think he's really referring to the root chromatically moving down a half step as the base underneath, which we can only achieve with the first inversion. Otherwise, it sounds too conventional.

Okay, here's a little secret sauce for you. In D minor, try D minor -> E minor + flat 6th (E, G, Bb, D) -> Second inversion of D minor (F, A, D) -> Dominant 7th first inversion -> (C#, E, A).
