    You are so amazing for making something like this. I am trying to get into different art school ( Interlochen, creative writing) but can't find anything like this, witch is really daunting, I am just all on my own. So, I just wanted to say that this probably means a lot for anyone trying out for Sheridan, or animation in generall.

  • @sadflowers

    As a good ol' Sheridan Anime grad myself, I gotta say this is a very helpful resource and you definitely know your stuff. Congrats on getting in!
    It has definitely changed since the 2014 applications (we didn't have to submit any animations) so major respect to you and all the others who are already animators right before school starts!
    Time management and prioritizing is certainly a skill that will be needed all throughout the school and the animation career after, so good to exercise that skill and avoid the last-minute stresses (which I all too often get close to).
    Best of luck to everyone applying, you can do this! Just keep drawing and be open to learning new things through your pieces - finding new ways to have fun with art and be curious about what you can do along the way. You'll find yourself doing better and better as you grow!
    (Also, the Sheridan AniJams I'm seeing from the new generations are absolutely amazing! Y'all are great!)

    Girl this is amazing. I love your style so much. I'm planning to apply for Animation in Sheridan in the future (probably in 4 or 5 years). I've always had that dream of doing animation since I was a kid. I started sketching cartoon characters since I was 7 and yeah that whole Disney and Pixar thing has always been a dream to me. Now I'm in Canada doing my Accounting degree, I'm planning to do an animation degree in Sheridan after I finish my current degree (I'm gonna finish probably in 2 years and I wanna work for 1 to 2 years. And I'm gonna prepare for the animation application as well during that time). I'm just wondering do you think it's possible for me to apply according to my condition? I didn't take any art courses in high school but I did learned pencil sketching for a few years when I was young. I also do some watercolour painting during my leisure time. I love animation but I didn't really do a lot of animation drawing and I wasn't trained on that before. (I know it sounds kinda weird, lol) Would you give me any suggestions? Thank you so much :)

    • @paluumin-art
      @paluumin-art  Před 4 lety +13

      aAAA thank you so much!! 😭💖💕💕 And don't worry, it's not weird at all! There's lots of people in the program who have other degrees in science, business, math, etc. I think it depends more on how much you're willing to put into animation (how passionate you are about it and how far you're willing to go for animation) rather than how much experience you have. It's a program that requires you to (almost 😂) love drawing to death (and specifically cartoons or anything animation related). Even if you feel that you lack experience in art, that's ok! A lot of people feel that way, but it's those that put the extra effort into practising that make it out and go to Disney or Pixar :D ✨💪 I'd say if you love drawing to the point you would willingly draw everyday and you genuinely want to improve (not for the sake of getting into Sheridan or to get a job at Disney, but because you enjoy it and you wanna make great art), then ya go for it! You don't even need to find a tutor necessarily (though it's helpful for portfolio), you can improve your art by drawing from/studying art books and watching tutorials :D that's how I learned most of the skills I have today in animation (even at the studio I went to, blue tadpole studio, they made me look at tons of art books from movies, films, artists, studios. Then they told me to draw what I found appealing, and it helped so much. They also recommended me lots of books I read in my own time, like cartoon animation by Preston Blair, the Weatherly guide to drawing animals, Michael Hampton's figure drawing book, etc.) But ya the main ingredients to your answer is passion, perseverance and dedication :) ✨💪💪 best of luck! 💖 Hope that helped!

      paluumin Thank you so much sweetie. This is so encouraging for me. I hope you will do well in the future in animation. And yeah enjoy the college life, it’s hard and sometimes stressful, but you’ll enjoy it once you’re in the right program.🥰🥰

      1) I did my animation traditionally (on paper), and I scanned them and put them in photoshop or online gifmaker :'D there was another program I used at my studio but like you'd need some next level equipment for that :'))
      2) character design tips are just the tips I have in the video :'D for watercolour, keep in mind it's called watercolour, so use water. Experiment with the different variations of intensity and the different effects you can get for watercolour 👌 and most of all, practice :'D I've been doing watercolour (seriously?) for a couple years :'D A lot of it is colour theory as well so you might want to review/study that too 👍
      Hope that helps!

    • @paluumin-art
      @paluumin-art  Před 4 lety +14

      thank you! You could... But I wouldn't recommend it :0 I think for life drawing, they specifically look for traditional (conte on newsprint). Even for personal piece, it'd be kind of a waste to make all 5 of your pieces digital... You wanna show off the breadth of your skills in personal pieces, so I wouldn't make it all digital unless they're all completely different from each other (like I submitted a digital painting, a digital film, and if I were to submit a third, it'd be like a character sheet, but I didn't because having 3/5 personal pieces being digital just didn't represent the range of my skills well).

I saw that you reply to almost every comment so hopping that you see this but what would you recommend me to start working on right now? Portfolio wise? Since I am 15 I got a couple of years till I apply so really any tip helps!

      @paluumin-art  Před 4 lety +1

      Glad my video helped! I covered most of my tips in my video, but when I was 15, I started to focus on gearing my style towards Western animation. So I did a lot of character designs, studied a lot from various art books, and did a ton of perspective practice :) I went to a studio and the teachers there were very helpful in helping me find the flaws in my art and work on fixing them. Improve your draftsmanship, do life drawing, take classes, improve your sense of design, read, be inspired by stories, etc. 👍 Nothing too special 😂 this is just what I did back then!

      Thank you so much! 💖 This year the requirements were released at the beginning of October (for the 2020 applying year). If you are looking to apply in 2021, the requirements will be out in October 2020 and the complete (non-watermarked) requirements are only available on your Sheridan access account once you've registered TO Sheridan. • @paluumin-art
      @paluumin-art  Před 4 lety +11

      Erasing in life drawing is a big nono :'D In life drawing classes and sessions, no one around me ever uses an eraser and I was never taught to use an eraser in life drawing 😂😂 erasing is seen as a waste of time and a sign of lack of confidence by some people 👀 it took a lot of practice for sure, but eventually you'll learn to draw one (1) big line for the leg (for example), and just keep going (doesn't matter if it's perfect or trash :'))). You can see some of my current life drawings on my realism account on Instagram: @/nimuulap to get an idea of my linework! I try to make my lines confident and in as little strokes as possible :'D (and I never use erasers in life drawing unless it's a tiny practice drawing in my sketchbook 😂)
      However, if you have a really good life drawing and you lowkey messed up this oNE line that's not supposed to be in a certain spot, and it's a vERY small change... You can lowkey erase it 👀 and submit it 😂 but just keep in mind they can tell if you erased or not :'))

    Awesome video! Just a few questions about the portfolio. Firstly, the human body thing at the start, when they say “drawn from life” do they mean like you progressively made the drawing up using knowledge of anatomy or that you copy it from real life? And also would you lose marks if they were wearing clothes? I know awkward question... I’m just weird about this kind of thing and that’s probably what I’d prefer to do.
    Last question is, how long are you given on the portfolio? Thank you so much, your video is very helpful :) it is another few years before I go, so I have a lot of time to prepare and think about it but it’s videos like yours that make it so much easier and a less worrying experience 👍👍

    • @paluumin-art
      @paluumin-art  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi! Thank you!
      1) As you can see from my accepted portfolio and other accepted portfolios, the figure needs to be of a nude model, no clothes. It's weird at first but you get used to it and you will only draw nude models in first year and extra life at Sheridan 👌 You should study up on anatomy in your own time and go to life drawing sessions (once it's safe to do so) where there will be nude models who pose for certain amounts of times and you just draw them
      2) Requirements come out in October or November, and the deadline is in February. However some people start way earlier (I officially started over the summer because as I said in my video, I knew character rotation would be a requirement, as it was for many past years)

    • @paluumin-art
      @paluumin-art  Před 2 lety

      Hi! They're not "against" it, we refer to a lot of animes in lessons and classes (lots of Ghibli, Akira, cowboy bepop, etc.). There's also a ton of students who have amazing anime styles and use it for all their assignments, and there's nothing wrong with that! But the key thing to understand is that you're applying to a western animation school, where most of the curriculum is based on western animation. This means when they evaluate your admission portfolio, they will be evaluating you based off their knowledge of western animation. They expect you to be able to draw various body types, show volume/form, show personality and story, show variety, show exaggeration, etc. So while you can draw anime for your portfolio, just remember to keep the key things people look for in western animation. For me, my style was largely anime too, but all of my faces looked the same and all my characters looked the same. I wanted to be able to adapt to as many styles as possible, which is why I "changed" my style. I wouldn't say I forcefully changed it, I just discovered that there's more than anime out there and I was really inspired by many art of books :D You can find a ton of art of books on Amazon, such as art of ratatouille, art of Luca, etc.

It will also be hard to adjust to conte and newsprint if you get into the program, because that's all we use for the first 2 years and being comfortable with conte and newsprint will take out a lot of the stress and frustration you might feel in first year (a lot of people either really didn't like life drawing or really liked it, and I think having used conte for a couple years prior made life drawing class more enjoyable for me)

It's a very toxic and self depricating way of thinking :'0 I was never always good at art, and because I wasn't originally gonna pursue it as a career, I just did it for fun/as a hobby. So I had a lot of fun drawing and therefore I drew a LOT;;; it's hard to get better or feel confident in something when you force yourself to :'0 so stop comparing and draw more! 💖✨ Learn to love art and just enjoy and set goals for yourself that you genuinely want to reach! Hello! For life drawing, the best way to get better at it is to do it a ton! I did around 3 hours of life drawing a week when I was your daughter's age, sometimes I did more, and these were all at in-person studios. Depending on where you live, you can see if there's drop-in life drawing available near you. If covid is a barrier, I believe there's a few online zoom sessions, but I'm not sure where (I sometimes see people advertise it on instagram). You can also check out line of action (free website) and gesdraws party on youtube. As for the technical aspects of life drawing, I took kinesiology in high school which helped me understand how certain joints of the body worked, and I studied Proko's anatomy videos. I also read and did studies of Michael Hampton's figure drawing book (as mentioned in the video), and The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals. Hope that helps!

I believe sign ups being in March or April... If you pause the video, you'll see that I don't encourage you to go to national portfolio day because Sheridan Animation is never there (they haven't shown up in the past couple of years) because their own open house is usually the week after or some time close. They do portfolio reviews at the open house. However if you want to check out other programs other than Sheridan animation, then by all means, go to national portfolio day.

      Hi! Sorry I don't :'O Best to ask an international student! I'm from Canada so I only know about the Canadian/domestic scholarships!

      Yep I'm Canadian! And yeah go for it! There's lots of American students here for that reason too :D ✨

    I love your art
    I have a question, so you applied to sheridan college now? But you are class of 2023? What about your future grades?

      Thank you! :D 💖 I applied to sheridan animation in 2019, and now I'm part of the class of 2023 :) (I'm not sure what you mean by future grades, but grades aren't that important in the animation industry, as long as you pass you're fine)

    did u do the life drawings from nude models or? i'm trying to figure out how i should practice that. im in grade 10 but it's stressing me out haha

      @paluumin-art  Před 4 lety

      hi! yes I did! I started some time around grade 10/11 as well! haha it's weird at first but you get used to it :D I had to be 16 years old to go to actual live model sessions in my area, so in the meantime I practiced online. Croquis Cafe is a great resource! Even now I use it to do life drawing when campus life drawing is closed.

      paluumin i don’t think there are live model sessions in my area plus my parents don’t even know i want to do animation 🥴 but thanks ! i’ll practice online i guess and find out about live model sessions around me :D

      @@bunny-vj6qe Yeh that sounds like a good plan! I would suggest maybe talking with your parents about your choice too haha I had to get parental permission to go to live model drawing sessions and the actual application process asks for info about your parents I'm pretty sure 😂

    I have a question, how and where did you draw the figure drawings? I’m kinda nervous and might apply here :(

      I went to a lot of life drawing sessions! I also went to blue tadpole for portfolio prep and a second year animation student was teaching life drawing :) I also learned a lot from Sheridan's summer portfolio prep course (as I mentioned in my video), where one of the first year profs taught life drawing.
