I think (and this is my best guess, as this is still pretty new to me) that those are not contradictory issues. Philosophical discussions and religious views would inform the discourse that is used by people. The way we talk about those things and describe them in our language would be the focus of analysis from a discursive perspective; and this is how an understanding of 'identity' would be developed.

i don't think identity is only formed through discourse but also in ones view of them self through religion or philosophy
