Police say an Oklahoma dad “hunted” his family inside their home on April 22 after an argument escalated into a murderous rampage. Jonathon Candy allegedly grabbed a gun after a heated fight with his wife and began systematically trying to kill everyone in the home. The surviving child has a very long and difficult life ahead of him. I can’t imagine how he feels about the whole situation. He’s only 10. Poor guy is going to need therapy for a long time and will possibly suffer with PTSD and survivors guilt for life.

I think anyone being a lone survivor of anything this horrifying would need years of therapy to even remotely cope. He may questiion his entire life why he was spared.
This sounds way too similar to the other case of a dad who killed his three sons as well. Sad that this is now becoming so common.

This type of behavior is typical of the human species. We’re the most vicious, violent and sadistic species ever to exist. It always amazes me how many people still seem incapable of grasping that simple fact. Animals (as in four-legged non-human animals) have got nothing on us. Extreme acts of violence such as this are uniquely human.

I've always been confused by comments like this. Everyone isn't identical.
Right? I've tried over 26 different psych meds at last count starting in my teens... treatment-resistant = having TWO meds fail to work. Was raised in a yelling, chaotic household filled with (loaded) guns strewn about and somehow managed never to pick one up and murder anyone. I'm definitely not advocating irresponsible gun ownership (or gun ownership at all) but just saying... murder is always a choice. This was no Andrea Yates situation where psychosis drove the killings.

I don’t think, they think it through seriously enough. It’s what they’re expected to do. Most are young men. The financial and social pressures are too much. It usually involves families with more than one child and raising children is very expensive. All their money goes to the family and they begin to understand that they can’t do or buy anything they want or need. The cute blonde at the office gives them a wink and attention and they start thinking “I don’t want this life anymore”. This other life would be so much better without them. These are the ones that don’t kill themselves. These are the selfish ones. Then there’s the other ones that kill their families and then themselves. These are the narcissistic fathers. They usually only have the financial problems and pressures and feel their families can’t live without them. They take everyone with them, instead of killing only themselves.
They either are suffering some extreme form of psychosis where the person they were is not there anymore or is buried deep down, or they never loved those people to begin with
It's not new, family annihilators have always been a thing. They just didn't get much press, pre internet. Sometimes it's not psychosis, there are several men who killed their families because they lied about family finances and was found out.
You call the youngest boy lucky …and I understand what you are saying. However…he has to live with his father as the murderer…with no parents or siblings for the rest of his life. That doesn’t seem very lucky.
Not to mention the unimaginable trauma of being 10 years old and waking up to find your entire family dead from a brutal attack

When I was 10 my friend from school and soccer didn't show up for class for a few days. Turned out his father had been served divorce papers the prior week and their mom was now living with her boyfriend. One morning she showed up to get things and say hello to her 3 kids. They were upstairs getting ready for school. The father snuck up on her in the garage and with a ⛏️ pick-axe, put it right thru the top of her head. Ending her life instantly. He then put her in the trunk, got the kids ready and took them to school. On the way to school he pulled over and dumped her body that was wrapped in a blanket and the kids saw him and asked what that was and he said just some old trash. Kids were 10,9,7. They got counseling and all 3 are normal, no depression, members of society that all have families. Now this was back in the early 90's. They didn't coddle you like they now do and thankfully they were not put on anything from big pharma because that rots your brain. So, people are different and the times are different. As he told me a few yrs ago that he "is so glad their doctor would sit and talk to them the week after it happened and explained why things like this happen and that the most important thing was to communicate and that feeling happy is perfectly normal and that it wouldn't make their mom mad. Now they want to put you in a "survivors" group or club where you let everyone feel sorry for you and none of us wanted that. We needed friends and normalcy"

I feel like he wanted to just leave one son to carry on his name. That’s my hypothesis. What a terrible burden that young boy will carry for the rest of his life. The survivors guilt and the longing for answers makes me sad for him.

Just because there wasn’t a record of DV doesn’t mean there wasn’t any DV. A lot of women don’t report for fear of retaliation from the abusers because uses the courts don’t take it seriously and they let them go with a slap on the wrist.
In the states, reporting DV just ends up making things worse. The cops don’t care in a lot of places and then if you’re lucky, you get a piece of paper to protect you. A piece of paper, enforced by the same cops who don’t care. I saw a statistic that something like 40% of US police officers are also domestic abusers.

I messed up in my youth...spent too many years drinking. Too selfish. Now...13 years after I quit, my biggest regret is not starting a family. The selfishness in this act...I just can't imagine. I hope that boy finds some peace some day.
There's nothing selfish about not having kids. If you want it that bad then go adopt one. But the truth is this is no world to bring a baby into and if it's this bad now imagine what it will be like in 10, 20 or 30. Unpopular opinion: it is more selfish to bring children into this world than to not. The greatest salvation on earth is to never be born. Tbh the story is one of the greatest tales of trauma and evil ever told in my opinion. That story changed my life. I’ve had CPTSD my whole life. Nothing I’ve ever seen before or since has conveyed the power of trauma like that film. Just my two cents. I would imagine that’s why

He even managed to rationalise chasing down and executing a ten year old half brother of a girl he fancied - as if it was some sort of favor he was doing the child. She complained about dad disregarding her. (His uncle also resented this neighbor and may also have egged him on.). He goes there planning to kill him, finds him home with his son and another random neighbor, has a beer with them, then kills all three. In the interview he sententiously goes on about how it was a mercy to the boy, and how bereavement will probably bring their family closer together. This is not delusion, it is a psychopath capable of very little empathy regurgitating pat TV-drama homilies that he naively thinks will make him look compassionate instead of callous.
My love is with this poor little boy. I hope that he’s able to have great support and therapy to cope with this tragedy.

My first thoughts are for that poor little child that's going to have to grow up without his family and hear about all the gruesome details that entailed before he could even comprehend something so traumatic and devasting. It's happening every couple of months. There have been several cases of family annihilation in the past year. There was a time it was happening one right after another.
Oklahoma is one of the states with the highest domestic violence rates. I'm not surprised this happened. What a tragedy, though.

That's not even what this family looked like anymore. All of the pictures are from several years ago. I think bad times came financially, and otherwise and it led to psychosis with this guy. I NOTICED THE "IT" POSTER AS WELL. I LIKED IT AND I SUPPOSE SO DID SHE. I JUST KNOW THAT THERE IS A LESSON TO BE LEARNED IN HAVING THAT POSTER ON THE WALL. I THOUGHT THAT MUCH OF WHAT SHE SAID WAS INSIGHTFUL. DOES NOT LESSEN THE HORRIFIC RAMIFICATIONS OF THESE EVIL ACTS. UNFATHOMABLE REALLY.
It’s so sad that police just end the case there, we never take the time to look at how he came to do this. We should be updating our list of warning signs or at least paying attention to them. Hope the kid turns out okay.
Suspect that after altercation with wife, either the 3 kids tried to intervene or aid their Mom, or they were just there and he acted out in rage. Thank goodness the 10 year old was sleeping. Heartbreaking.

I have been tracking strange cases of families of 5 ending this horrific way for a few years now. I have a playlist of over 20 different cases...... Weird.
This was a family of six.

My apologies. I should have worded it differently. I meant 5 family members, ended that way. In the cases I put together in that Playlist, there are often other family members gone at the time, ones already older and out of the house etc.

He could grow up with survivors guilt,and feel blessed to have survived but feel saddened that the fact his dad left him to suffer and live with the loss of his entire family.
I hate to even think it, but I find myself wondering if the surviving child is lucky to have been spared or worse off for it. It might be that the mom was getting ready to leave and the older boys either tried to protect her or voiced their support towards mom and not towards the dad but the 10 year old wasn't old enough to have an ill opinion of dad. Or the older boys were more likely to physically stop dad, but the youngest wasn't as much of a threat. What a horrific situation. It's even more terrifying to think there could be no warning signs leading up to a catastrophic family annihilation. Absolutely horrific.

Darlie Routier’s youngest was left alive too. I thought it strange, but maybe it is more common than previously thought.
The youngest son was upstairs with the dad and the other 2 were downstairs with Darlie. Maybe the youngest wasn’t killed because he was too near the dad.

The father may have thought he wasn't home and because the son had a fan didn't hear anything and stayed in his room. The wife may have wanted a divorce and it set him off.

Depression leads to hopelessness and distorted thinking, it's easy to just claim this is evil, but thats often just an easy way for people to not deal with what happened. Drugs, Gambling, Affair, could be anything.

Please do not use depression as a an excuse for this type of horrific act. I have many family members with depression and anxiety including myself that would never do this to family. Many people with depression would kill themselves before harming anyone else. This is definitely a mental health crisis but doesn’t necessarily equal depression. Let’s stop the stigma. Thanks.

I cannot fathom what the surviving son is going through. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with him and his family.
His family said that there were no big red flags and never seen this coming. UNFORTUNATELY - most family members have no idea what truly is going on within a marriage. Most women/mothers will keep bad husband things to themselves. Most family members will say I didn't see this coming or ever see anything bad. Just because the family says he was a "wonderful" man doesn't make it true. He clearly is a monster who murdered his family. This lady making up all of these excuses as to why this guy did this is making me crazy. He murdered his family because he flat wanted to. I hate hearing that every time someone murders their children that it has to be because of depression, mental health issues. NOPE people murder children because they are complete crap monstrous people that want to murder their children.

Ik im with the love of my life and ive never been this happy before. If he wanted to leave i would be beyond devastated and my heart would be shattered.... but i would rather that than someone murdering me.
A father who isn't working fulltime and supporting his family needs to put his ego aside...this is crazy, I can't imagine being hunted and hiding from my dad who's chasing me with a gun
