- This week we’re BACK at the sleepy volcano to see what’s new. Editor-in-chief Valur Grettisson (and Chief Morale Officer Pollý) are here to bring you all the latest.
The volcano hasn’t been declared over yet, and scientists want to wait for three months just to make sure. But the lava is still steaming, especially in the winter, making the place incredibly beautiful as well as mysterious. There are some gases coming from the volcano, but nothing to worry about. Also, the people of Grindavík are very happy that this is over - but they are not out of the woods just yet.

Once again we see the lava flows. Incredible! The close up shots of the colours and steam coming from the lava was beautiful. I could spend a lot of time just looking at it. The trash someone tossed into one of the fissures shows not everyone appreciates this marvel. Thank you Valur and Art. It’s always nice to see Polly as well.
Thank you! ♥️ My husband and I were just there a couple weeks ago. I can still smell the clean air, feel the rocky uneven ground near the lava, feel the cold wind. There was no snow on the ground then....Lol, my videos all had wind noise as well. 😅 And we came to the volcano straight from the Airport. Did you stop and get fish and chips from Helgi's Street Food? 👍😉
Despite the lack of volcano activity, MY interest in Iceland is and will always be there and of course the interest in the Grapevine will not diminish. Thanks Chief

I don’t know what lifts my spirits more, the impressive number of all weather gear for every different type of weather (how many coats does Valur own? We should start counting!, Polly, the weather, or the lava fields! It looks so very cold there today. These videos are always the highlight of my day! Thank you to everyone at the Grapevine who keep this production going!
Another excellent report from Fagradalsfjall. I was fortunate to be there three weeks ago and even though it is no longer actively erupting, it is still magnificent to see. The hike up Langihryggur gave a great perspective over the whole area. I’m just sorry I missed seeing Valur, Art and sweet Pollý up there that day. Takk fyrir! 🇨🇦❤️🇮🇸

Thank you Valur! The crystal clear and professional production of these video is awe inspiring. The hosting by all the hosts is warm and welcoming, nobody could ever be more welcoming than Pollý, Art's camera work on the ground and in the air is the quality of a major motion picture, and the technical aspects of sound and lighting are always excellent. I must give deep thanks to Fagradalshraun for introducing me to The Reykjavík Grapevine and another equally talented source from Akureyri called Just Icelandic. It has been a very rewarding and enjoyable experience for me and I send you warm greetings from Boulder, Colorado.

Wonderful to see how our favorite little mountain looks now! I do miss the active lava flows, but the stark beauty of a fresh lava field is almost as good. Art, your videography is superb as always! Valur and Polly, great reporting - I laughed out loud at the bit about "Grindavik shaking all the gottdamn time!" Reminded me so much of the way my grandfather talked (his branch of the ancestral tree left NE Iceland in the late 1870/early 1880s after one of the large eruptions...).
Excellent commentary and photography yet again. Thank you from England for your efforts. Big tummy rub to Polly, too. She's the essential ambassador who adds to your superb input.

I can't believe mice are native to Iceland so they must have been imported at some time in the past. How amazing that the mouse has got to be where it is, how disgusting that some selfish person has discarded their waste like that.
Thank you Valur (& team) for this facinating update with the volcano, it is with much sadness (ill health) I have not been able travel to see it for myself. Your videos have brought the volcano to my home, truly facinating to watch and enjoy. Having visited in 2018 I understand the comments about the road, and Grindavik, and the Blue Lagoon, these are all so close but lucky to have avoided the lava (so far). I note from Lava Centre's email alerting service there has been an increase in earthquakes, no doubt watch points for all, and possible future video topics for you (!).
The lava fields are still quite impressive and beautiful. I enjoyed the close-up look and wish I could see it personally. Head scratches to Polly! Thanks so much.
Walked the steaming lava field and climbed the 3-km mountain to view the active volcano in September - stunning to see and experience for real. Lots of spectacular scenery in Iceland, but this was an amazing sight. The lava fields are massive, much larger than they look here.

Valur, Volcanoes are never considered dead, they are just in a dormant state. The scenery is very beautiful.

That scenery! With the cone in the far distance with the greenery on it, and then the lava fields stretching for as far as you could see, that would make a great setting for a fantasy novel!
The lava fields really are the star of the show right now. Thanks for the beautiful footage at the end, Art. My family really enjoyed their hike to the lower lava field three weeks ago. I am sure there are many more volcanic experiences in store for Iceland in the coming years. The frequent earthquakes make that a reality. Thanks again for braving the cold weather and wind to show us this beautiful place.

When I was there in 1970 Hekla erupted. I wasn't able to get off the Navy base to see it until near the end of the eruption, but it was still impressive. There were trails of hot lava running down the mountain. We were at the edge of the lava field. Despite being able to see some small glowing hot spots in the lava, we were amazed to see Icelanders climbing on top of the lava and digging small holes to cook food and heat coffee. One told us it was a lava party and invited to climb up and have some fried fish. I politely declined the offer :)
Great newscast again. I must compliment Art on the videos again. I don't know if he has formal art training but if he doesn't, he has a great natural gift for composition. I often get the urge to pause the video and break out my oil paints.

Timing is everything on these eruptions. I was able to catch parts the 1980-81 Hekla eruptions while serving at NAS Keflavik. Spectacular to see Mother Nature at its wildest.
The volcano and lava fields will always keep me intrigued. More than that look forward to the weekly reports about Iceland. Give Polly an extra treat for the great job that she does.

As many hours as I’ve spent watching this volcano on live feeds and other videos (and i’ve spent a LOT-hello BOBnation!), I always love seeing Art’s camera work on Grapevine’s volcano episodes. He always picks interesting angles and shots and shows me things I hadn’t seen before. Here, even with the volcano not spewing lava for months, he still gets amazing footage, showing us beautiful panorama shots of the volcano and lava field, and then the amazing close-up shots of the lava near the end of the video. Thanks so much Art, Valur, and of course Polly!
Careful Valur - the last time you said that the Volcano may be over, it erupted again. You Never know. Ha Ha - Just Kidding. It’s a fascinating area and I’m glad I was able to see the volcano in person. 🤣😉🌋

Knowing that Hekla volcano is called the "Gateway to Hell" makes it seem all the more likely that an eruption is overdue! It last blew in 2000.
Amazing how it was not windy until you get to the top of the mountain.

I was living in Iceland in 1980 when Hekla took the power off for a week with her eruption.
Yet again, Art out does himself with the lava cinematography! He should get a Nobel Prize for Literature. You know what they say about a picture being worth a thousand words. And Arts videos are 1000s of pictures put together 😉

It looks just it was when I was there! Except there’s no wind, rain and fog… you can actually see more than a few metres. Otherwise - identical.
Does the place still have that amazing smell? The burning peat under the lava flows was producing a smell like a peat fire you might get in Scotland or Ireland - and a bit like a really good Islay whisky. The fumes almost certainly contained all sorts of toxic hydrocarbons that will shorten my life - but oh that lovely smell…

That rat in the lava field must have the best place to stay for the winter in all of Iceland, floor heating all the time. Just the food might be a bit short in suplly there, if the tourists stay away in winter.

That's the name I gave this place just for fun in one of the comments maybe a week after it started...
And I was worried as it got bigger and bigger, but finally at least in this eruption period it did not destroy any houses or roads. That's good...
When I think of La Palma, that's a very dramatic scene with many houses close to the volcano, many houses already destroyed, a rather densely populated area at La Palma...
The Thing is.... "DON'T WALK ON LAVA!"
How much colder would you say it was once you got up on the ridge? (Rough estimate)
There are three stages of a volcano:
Active , 🌋 dormant ( not been active for some years) and extinct ( dead -not erupted for many years and believed incapable of doing so).
Something is still active and alive there … right now, two tiny fire lights, like eyes or headlights, on the eastern rim of the volcano, watch mbl-cam every night. - But actually, that lava stuff must provide an ideal building material, when it keeps the heat and warmth for so long.
That mouse is of course a Wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) not a House mouse(Mus musculus) 15:00
