The Process I use to make white oak lump charcoal to be used in my offset smoker. It burns hotter and faster but I like the flavor it gives more than your standard briquettes. I use a 55 gallon drum as the coal oven.

That's not so much charcoal as half burnt wood.

Nice simple video and process. I do the same type of burn (TLUD) but use another 55 gal drum with the bottom cut out and use it as an afterburner. Works quite well and the yield is decent, not sure if it is better or not. As a side note, I'm sure you could a lighter to ignite the wood gasses coming out after you put your lid on. Makes for a cool effect.
Pro trick: you can watch movies on Flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.

How do you make the really hard long lasting charcoal? The soft type is easy, but can anyone offer suggestions for making the hard dnse type of charcoal?
Completely seal the barrel with a very small hole on top so all the gasses can escape and no oxygen can go in...place it on top of a fire and keep the fire going till no smoke comes out then seal the hole and let it completely cool down...or just look up videos on CZcams like i did😂
You are right, the stuff in this video is pretty easy to make and works allright but is not really the best you can get and you waste a lot of charcoal by setting it on fire. From my own knowledge and experience you'll need a retort for getting dense charcoal. I made on according to Jon Jondai, in his video called the 2nd technique. No as simple as this but if still managed to make it using 0 $.
If you are talking about making Kingsford type briquette charcoal, you take this lump stuff and smash it all up into small pieces and then you gotta figure out a shape mold and use like a 20ton press to make your briquettes. I see a lot of guys use a steel tube as a mold to make briquettes. Seems very time consuming…
What kind of fire did you start with in the bottom and how long before you put the bigger wood in?
Hobby Maniac I started with small sticks and lighter fluid until there was a coal base, then added in the bigger stuff.
Do you use dry wood or it not matter
It needs to be dry and well seasoned. Green wood has too much moisture for such a delicate process and will kill it.
Even knows I make my own charcoal and I thought it was a pretty great idea what you were doing until I saw the results you need to burn like everybody else one sealed Barrel inside of another Barrel

This is not lump charcoal. Lump charcoal is created through the process of pyrolysis.
Yeah this is burnt wood with SOME lump charcoal properties.

how long the drum last in that fire ?
I’ve had that drum for years, but I keep it dry and off the ground.
I like the soundtrack
Just weld a smoke stack on the bottom and put the lid on it and build a bon fire and put the barrel in the middle of the bon Fire. then just wait till the stack is no longer smoking and there’s no longer fire. then pull it out of the fire and wait till it cools to touch then open it.
How long does this process take ?
I let it rest overnight, so probably 16+ hours.

A little more than 1/2 the drum.
You are much better off with a retort charcoal burner. Too much waste with the way you originally did it.

There are many more efficient 55 gallon charcoal makers on youtube. You could increase your efficiency by putting a sheet metal cylinder around that barrel to hold more heat in and if you look at the other methods you will see that they use the smoke as the input fuel instead of MORE WOOD.
Gotcha! I'm just an amateur with a barrel and some wood to use. I'm pretty happy with the simplicity of this process.

It seems like 6 months ago Harold went around youtube looking at charcoal barrels and complaining about all of their efficiencies. Guess he had some spare time.
You need bugger ports at tge bottom. And you need to stack your wood at the bottom with just like two big pieces across the bottom so you have a void for air. Then stack all the wood from there to the top with smaller wood around the outside and bigger pieces in the center. After the whole thing catches fire. You close the lid and let it burn all the gasses off before shutting it down .
I've got three choices. Watch the video with no volume, Hear the video by holding the phone to my ear without watching it, or move along.....
