Finland stands out in an excellent way... the one to beat
So WOW: Serbia, Israel and Finland.
Everyone else looked pretty good.
Was underwhelmed by Sweden, looked quite bland.
Can't wait for see the next few teaser videos.

Malta, Serbia, Israel, and Finland were the best for me (in no particular order)
I will say, I’m impressed but not *wowed* by the first part of Noa’s dance break-the moves do not feel dynamic or particularly interesting to me and the camera angles don’t do them any justice, either. But when the backing dancers come in and the LEDs hit: now that was a wow for me. One of the few instances where I’ve actually liked the artists face being used, too.
I think my favourites have definitely got to be Finland Israel and Serbia from these clips, i had the same reaction to finland as you with the tongue and Israel had my jaw on the floor!!! Love love love serbias outfit and camera work especially

Serbia was my favourite clip! The added graphics look so cool! I was surprised to hear that things went wrong for him in that rehearsal because the clip they showed us just looked so cool. Can't wait to see the full performance!
I came here before watching the og video with the sounds, so I'll obstain from choosing a favourite. Serbia looks amazing, and I'm totally loving that Käärijä seems to be exorcising his inner demons (with long tongues?) with those piña coladas. 💚💚💚

This is extremely clever, artistic and satyrical anti-war and anti-dictatorship song that is very much needed in such dark times very similary as it was Chariles Chaplin's famous movie "The Great Dictator" that was also attacked by some at that time although it was genius protest against evil regime of that time! He was also so sadly misunderstood at that time although he has made engaged protest masterpiece!

Speaking of performance, Israel is the most impressive by far! If the vocals are there in the first parts of the song (and Noa is a great vocalist, as we all know!), then it's truly gonna be PHENOMENAL!!! Absolutely stunning!

Käärijä's backup vocalist for Eurovision is Aija Puurtinen who is a singing/vocal teacher and a musician herself.

Portugal and Latvia are my top 2 and I'm so worried I'm gonna lose them both. Serbia's clip impressed me the most though
urgh id be really sad if neither of them went through 😭
When Portugal can't even put some feathers on a screen, I'm even more convinced they won't qualify, as it was a 50/50 for me until now.
Loreen went small and a little messy while Käärijä went BIG and spectacular 😍🔥
My absolute favourites are Finland, Serbia, Israel and Croatia. I think Portugal lost with this staging as they lost that special cabaret atmosphere and became just very average, so I am not sure they will qualify if they don't sow something else. My non-qualifiers are Ireland, Azerbaijan and the Netherlands.

Mama ŠČ from Croatia 🇭🇷- by far the best entry on so, so many levels!
This is much more serious song than it seems at the first glance! It's anti-war and anti-dictatorship protest rock opera like song and brutal mockery of "little vile p*********" which is interpreted by many as Putin himself but also all mad dictators like him in general.
It is performed by the Let 3 - famous experimental and often extremely provocative Croatian art punk rock band that is active over 30 years and which also had collaborations in theater peroformances including those with very serious directors.
Posible lyrics description by many: "Mama ŠČ" = Mama Russia (among Russians "mother" symbolises their country), ŠČ is letter from the Russian alphabet.
"Mother bought a tractor" = Belarus dictator Lukašenko gave to Putin tractor for his 70th birthday.
"Mother loved a moron" = Mother Russia loved Putin.
As I've written "little vile p*********" is also interpreted as Putin and all mad agressors like him!
Let 3 outfits and styling: military like clothes as the representation of all mad war thirsty dictators in combo with drag queen like clothes and makeup (provocation to homophobic Russian President and likewise dictatorial conservatives).
Nuclear rockets in their performances are rather self-explanatory: "little vile p********" from the Kremlin is constantly threatening with usage of nukes!
It has to be said that Let 3 members had several interviews in which they gave some vague hints to whom this song might be dedicated to which can be summarized to dictators and all powerful people that think that have right to do whatever they please regardless of others including people as Putin! Of course I've paraphrased their words but that's the general meaning.

And even if you didn't mention the sound issues (but rather praised the vocals, surprisingly enough), Käärijä said in a live after the rehearsals that he had a lot of technical difficulties. He didn't hear himself from the monitor at all apparently, and it does sound like there were other sound problems going on as well, maybe in the mixing.

I love Malta so much! They must qualify. Even though their clip showed what feels like the least dynamic part of the song (the "driving" in the car bit) the LEDs are stunning and I am absolutely obsessed with them (but I do love some royal purple anyway). And I just love their enthusiasm.
Otherwise, not to sound like everyone else, but my faves were Israel, Serbia and Finland.

i thought Käärijä's tongue was a tie blowing in the wind at first and didn't realize till this video omg
Norway: This is looking good, but I do think some LEDs could've elevated it a bit more. The Camera Work could definitely use some sharpening up too. Still a safe qualifier.
Malta: Looking very nice. Have definitely given themselves a fighting chance and could sneak through if someone crumbles on the night.
Serbia: Massively elevated. With some sharpening up camera work wise, this is easily going to stand out and qualify.
Latvia: This is definitely looking better than the NF, but I'm not quite sure if its enough. Still have a chance though.
Portugal: This is looking a bit empty at the moment, but I have a strong feeling that this could be a mix of Moldova and Lithuania from last year. I think this needs the audience there to really come to life. Also, tightening the camera work and making it focus more on her will help a lot too. She said in an interview yesterday that she and her team haven't been given the biggest budget to work with, so I think that they are saving all there tricks for when it really matters as a result of this. I'm not losing hope just yet.
Ireland: This is better than I thought it would be, but it does remind me a lot of Malta from last year and we know how that ended. On life support but not looking very likely.
Croatia: Definitely looking better than the NF. Could definitely qualify.
Switzerland: This is looking nice and he sounds good. However, you can really tell that he's not a natural dancer and its clear that he's thinking of what his next step is. I feel this could be forgotten.
Israel: This is shaping up very nicely. I have no reason to doubt her vocal ability. Easy qualifier.
Moldova: Also looking very nice. Tighter camera work is definitely needed and I'm certain that the energy will be there on the night.
Sweden: This is more than likely qualifying. However, the camera work definitely needs to be tighter, but I'm sure that people watching this for the first time are really going to vibe with this. Her vocals also didn't sound too good, but I'm guessing she's either saving her voice for when it matters or this was the third run through.
Azerbaijan: This looks nice, but I don't think they have much of a chance.
Czechia: This is looking very good. A little bit of tightening up and I'm sure they'll be fine.
Netherlands: They definitely sound better, but the chemistry still isn't there for me. The camera work could also be tighter too. On the fence about their chances at the moment.
Finland: This looks great. I think there might've been some technical issues, but I'm certain on the night that it'll be fine.
Overall thoughts: This is shaping up to be a great semi final and its sad that we're going to lose some really great songs. I've seen some people kicking off about how some of the performances are looking, but we need to remember that these are rehearsals at the end of the day. Its better that any creases get ironed out now so that they'll be perfect on the night when it matters.
Käärijä's backing singer is Aija Puurtinen, she was the lady juror of the first editions of UMK who always had crazy hairdos/hats.

Great summary Tom. Ive been a fan of Malta since the start and they have defo ‘glowed up’ 😉 I found Sweden a bit bland, we dont get any surprises since the C + P from Melfest but its smaller looking, not as impactful for me. I had hopes for Ireland but felt it was a bit flat, but fingers still crossed. Never been a fan of the Israelli song, too disjointed for me, plus the ‘Chanel’ bit looks tagged on. Finland defo had a ‘glow up’ from UMK - energetic, dynamic and fun 😉

I think that Loreen's staging went from the latest iPhone at Melfest to the oldest one in Liverpool
That's just the Eurovision doing her dirty cause we all know that she can sing and has amazing stage presence, so it's not really her fault that it doesn't look like Melfest.

@@ESCTomuffff tough luck. but glad it got through! i just finished also watching the clip but for Finland I'm not too sure but i think for the first chorus it needs to be just him. i could hear his backup singer (also i read that he was having either mic or in-ear issues yesterday), so hopefully bbc could fix that. he actually has great vocals in the first part of the song and wouldn't need a backup there, imo.

I can't believe Eurovision week is almost here, it looks like yesterday the national final season began!!
I still think Loreen will qualify because she's Loreen and being in a scandi semi will help. But she's looking a lot cheaper than most of the acts. Except maybe the blander ones (stage-wise) like Ireland or Portugal or Azerbaijan, Moldova.
Israel FIXED the CENTAUR - UNICORN mistake, which completely threw me into a loop every time I saw it.
I feel this is the first time I've been able to concentrate on the song, instead of anticipating the THAT'S NOT A UNICORN! -moment.

It’s been some drama during this week. Apperently there have been some of the Swedish Eurovision fans and media that have criticized SVT and even got angry because they haven't done more. I hope it resolves itself.

Tom!! Always waiting for your videos. Great reaction, largely the same as mine to all of these. Israel gave a stadium show in 30 seconds and I'm pretty sure the public is going to be into it! For Loreen, I would have expected them to have better camera angles, to take everything closer so that the smaller size of the LED would be balanced out. Not convinced of it just yet.

I was originally disappointed that the press couldn’t see the rehearsals anymore but now, I’m excited about every song because they’ve all been able to choose and send out their best footage. I think overall it’s a positive thing. 🇦🇹🇫🇮🇮🇱

I was a little surprised Israel decided to show the dancebreak. I was ofc looking forward to it (and she absolutely killed it!) but in hindsight, I would have maybe preferred to hear a clip where she was singing :D
