The last year of a prisoners sentence should be spent training them for re entry into modern life. For example, a trained professional could teach them how to cook their own meals, learn new skills that could be used in the work force etc.
Dayna 101 all the years should be a rehabilitation process. I done ten years in prison and I worked on myself for years. Now the ones who waited until their last year or last six months almost always fail. Never progress always stagnant just merely living some go back. It’s all in you but some need extra help. These guys need help. But I came from a system like that in South Carolina. All southern systems are like that because it’s predominantly black.

I've done 6 months in solitary confinement, I now have a comparable view on what its like to be physically and emotionally disconnected from everyone you have ever loved, no matter how mentally strong you are prison takes something and burns it into you that will forever change how you interact with friends but most importantly, how you think when you stare at yourself in the mirror.
Yes I have been in solitary and my own mother has said that it made me a different person in many ways!!! None of them are any good, or anything positive
I was released from solitary 5 years ago . The first 2 years was very tough and i had the best support system a man could have . So imagine if you didn’t have that. Thank god i made it. I’m now a productive normal member of society.

It's alarming how prisons succeed more at increasing criminality than rehabilitating criminals. It's also sad how many convicts are more concerned about their own victimization than the pain they inflicted on their victims. The system failed.

Being a ex federal prisoner I can relate and met people who was scared to go home from doin 20 years. I was at usp Pollock in Louisiana. In 2009 that was the most dangerous prison in the system. It’s totally inhuman the thing I’ve experienced from guards .

I hate that they’re making it seem like people are thrown in the ADX for any ole thing. Getting to the ADX takes a referral and a history of extreme violence during incarceration. They need to tell the whole story.
Keep in mind that some of the disorders some criminals have -- for example, anti-social personality disorder (= psychopath) are roundly considered to be INCURABLE. Incurable, and incredibly dangerous to others, including total strangers.

I got out of Texas Department of Criminal Justice March 18, 2005 and I am STILL dealing with the lasting effects of 23 hour incarceration for 4 years. This video made me well up big time. FYI, this video doesn't show the outside of the ADX. Only the FPC (mostly) and the FCI (the farther one in the distance with the water tower). This facility has two other prisons: the Penitentiary and the ADX (Administrative Maximum).

Great jib Vice. I think you illustrated mental health as it is important and that we need to take care of it. Working in this field and Psychiatry and can say that a majority of the individuals that I see come through have some sort of mental illness. Putting the mentally ill in prisons isn't right but to a certain degree, they don't know the DSM or how to make a proper diagnosis. That's why you have us so we can help you with that. Re-entry programs are crucial to patients that suffer from severe mental illnesses. Keep up the great work! I will always advocate for people that have mental illness regardless of the nature of their charges. There are usually underlying issues going on in there.
The physiological impact of carrying yourself in them chains must be very traumatic for these men, this video was shocking totally breaking down the spirit their humaness. Total isolation on top of mental health issue I'm surprised any make it out alive.

To the average person who has never spent a day in jail much less time in solitary confinement can never understand what it does to a person mentally. You go in there normal and leave mentally a different person regardless of how strong you are mentally!
Well remember, he was incarcerated for breaking the law (I don't know what he initially was charged for but regardless he was found guilty and given over 12 years). While incarcerated with the BOP, he assaulted multiple correctional officers, which shows he is dangerous and requires higher security measures. While at ADX, he did not show any signs that he should be brought back down to a lower custody level which is proven by the fact that he was there for eleven years, or maybe not but this makes more sense. My point is that until there is a real plan that can effectively manage these problems that many convicts have, they should not be on the street. As evidenced by sexually assaulting someone within 5 days of release.

I did 444 days in 24 hour lockdown conditions with zero rec time. It was hell on Earth. My crime was Aggravated Burglary (Walked into my neighbor's house in what I know now was a state of excited delirium). Taken me 10 years to try and get my head on straight from that nightmare and am still struggling so I can imagine what these human beings are being subjected to and it's wrong. I was born in Denver. Grew up just outside (Aurora). I was diagnosed with Anxiety and PTSD (non-military related) in case anyone was curious. So I was in counseling for 4 1/2 years, I would go for 1 hour once a week, but at times I felt I needed it to be more often (at least twice a week for an hour) would've been a great help and they wouldn't give that to me. Even though I kept saying I needed the help I was denied even though I wouldn't mind paying for the extra session. That's why we all just gotta try to take care of ourselves and be cool with others. The system is broken for sure but what we really need to do is focus on healing ourselves if we need to. Happy New Year everyone.

It's alarming how prisons succeed more at increasing criminality than rehabilitating criminals. It's also sad how many convicts are more concerned about their own victimization than the pain they inflicted on their victims. The system failed.

Think the biggest thing is most of these inmates get out but have no skill sets, mechanical, technical or even carpentry. They need to be rehabilitated not locked up and forgotten
You end up at a place like ADX for being extremely violent and dangerous. Hard to teach someone a skill if they're trying to shank you every time you turn around.

Being a ex federal prisoner I can relate and met people who was scared to go home from doin 20 years. I was at usp Pollock in Louisiana. In 2009 that was the most dangerous prison in the system. It’s totally inhuman the thing I’ve experienced from guards .

Yes, he deserves to be punished for what he did to that woman, and she deserves justice. But this isn't justice, putting him in a cage is not going to make sue he doesn't assault someone else, nor does it reduce the rate of sexual assault in the outside world. He needs mental health care and rehabilitation. Imagine if instead he's forced to confront the fact that he took his pain out on someone else innocent, that he's given resources to deal with that pain, and will overcome that pain so he doesn't take it out on anyone else.

Jesus Chriat is the way. Have not been in prison but have stayed out of it because i listen to his teachings of Love and Peace. And hes there for you too brother, all you gotta do is ask, ive seen it, i testify of it, brother he is real and he will keep you with him. Then rehabilitate them to help them make better decisions when they go back out into society. i learned that solitary confinement (or intensive care units) leave people with no external stimuli in a place they already feel uncomfortable, leading their brain to commit their random ass thoughts (and delisuions) to meory instead of the events from their day.

Isn't solitary confinement a recognized form of torture? Being kept in that regularly as the norm for all the people being housed in a prison, that sounds horrible.
You dont just make a simple mistake and end up at ADX Florence, you earn that.
I hate that they’re making it seem like people are thrown in the ADX for any ole thing. Getting to the ADX takes a referral and a history of extreme violence during incarceration. They need to tell the whole story.

Keep in mind that some of the disorders some criminals have -- for example, anti-social personality disorder (= psychopath) are roundly considered to be INCURABLE. Incurable, and incredibly dangerous to others, including total strangers.

I got out of Texas Department of Criminal Justice March 18, 2005 and I am STILL dealing with the lasting effects of 23 hour incarceration for 4 years.
This video made me well up big time. I hope they make an extended video going more in depth.

FYI, this video doesn't show the outside of the ADX. Only the FPC (mostly) and the FCI (the farther one in the distance with the water tower). This facility has two other prisons: the Penitentiary and the ADX (Administrative Maximum).

Great jib Vice. I think you illustrated mental health as it is important and that we need to take care of it. Working in this field and Psychiatry and can say that a majority of the individuals that I see come through have some sort of mental illness. Putting the mentally ill in prisons isn't right but to a certain degree, they don't know the DSM or how to make a proper diagnosis. That's why you have us so we can help you with that. Re-entry programs are crucial to patients that suffer from severe mental illnesses. Keep up the great work! I will always advocate for people that have mental illness regardless of the nature of their charges. There are usually underlying issues going on in there.

Well remember, he was incarcerated for breaking the law (I don't know what he initially was charged for but regardless he was found guilty and given over 12 years). While incarcerated with the BOP, he assaulted multiple correctional officers, which shows he is dangerous and requires higher security measures. While at ADX, he did not show any signs that he should be brought back down to a lower custody level which is proven by the fact that he was there for eleven years, or maybe not but this makes more sense.
My point is that until there is a real plan that can effectively manage these problems that many convicts have, they should not be on the street. As evidenced by sexually assaulting someone within 5 days of release.

I did 444 days in 24 hour lockdown conditions with zero rec time. It was hell on Earth. My crime was Aggravated Burglary (Walked into my neighbor's house in what I know now was a state of excited delirium). Taken me 10 years to try and get my head on straight from that nightmare and am still struggling so I can imagine what these human beings are being subjected to and it's wrong. My prayers for anyone struggling and 5 words: Keep Your Head Up Peace
One feels sympathy for these prisoners. But they did not get put in prison for being as nice as they are in these interviews.

I was born in Denver. Grew up just outside (Aurora). I was diagnosed with Anxiety and PTSD (non-military related) in case anyone was curious. So I was in counseling for 4 1/2 years, I would go for 1 hour once a week, but at times I felt I needed it to be more often (at least twice a week for an hour) would've been a great help and they wouldn't give that to me. Even though I kept saying I needed the help I was denied even though I wouldn't mind paying for the extra session. That's why we all just gotta try to take care of ourselves and be cool with others. The system is broken for sure but what we really need to do is focus on healing ourselves if we need to. Happy New Year everyone.
