Esala Full Moon Poya day on 12th of July which marks many important events in the Buddhist history. Religious observances were conducted island wide in connection with the Poya Day. It is recorded in the history of Buddhism that Queen Mahamaya Devi conceived Prince Sidhartha on Esala Full Moon Poya Day. The Buddhist history states that Prince Sidhartha renounced the worldly life on this day. The Buddha preached his first sermon, "Dhamma Chakka Pavathwana Sutta", to the five ascetics on Esala Poya at Baranasa Isipathanaramaya. It is said that Venerable Kondanna Thera attained the state of "Sovaan" on this day. The Buddha performed the Twin Miracle, Yamaka-patihariya, and he preached Dhamma in the Tauthisa heaven. Princess Hema Mala and Price Dantha brought the sacred tooth relic to Sri Lanka on Esala Poya Day. Venerable Rajagiriye Ariyagnana Thera delivered the sermon at Temple Trees on July 12th on Esela Poya day.. It is the 125th sermon held at Temple Trees. President Mahinda Rajapaksa, First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, relatives, parliamentarians and a large number of devotees were present to listen to the sermon.
