    As a course of action when doing this, I was taught to undo the filler plugs first to be sure you can get access for refilling before draining the old oil. Not a criticism but just a food the thought for the viewers

      Hi Colin...loosening the filler is always a good idea before you drain the oil as i have made this point before on the channel that shall not be named...but in this case i knew all the filler plugs would come out as i have removed them all before..but a good point to make though..regards Paul

      Hi, we have a new to us 1997 Defender 300tdi. The filler plug for the gear box is a recessed plug, looks like it takes a 3/8 square but that’s not it. Any clue what to use to open this? Thanks

      Is it possible someone has fitted an 8mm square plug to it @@MilitaryMobility? They're not massively uncommon here in the UK/Europe

    I use 75W-140 Royal Purple gear oil in my DIsco 2 diffs and transfer box. Yes, I like to live life dangerously.

      Hi...the royal purple is not an oil i have ever used but have had a quick look at it and it looks interesting so might have to try it in the future..

    I just want to know the name of the genius who decided the best place for the gearbox crossmember on a Defender with an R380 box is directly under the drain plug. Oil everywhere 😂

    I was told to use ATF oil for my LT77 Bristol transmissions advised that was correct! Do you know why the difference in opinions?

    • @All4Overland
      @All4Overland  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hi there...ATF was the original oil that the gearboxes were spec'd to use but somewhere down the line they upgraded the oil to MTF94...but the gearboxes will still run on either oil but if you go to most landrover dealers they will tell you to use MTF now..

      Many thanks for the reply. I have filled mine and made a video too. It’s being released tonight so feel free to take a look. I’m trying to completely refurbish my late mother’s defender whom past away 2 years ago now.

    hi paul have u thought about putting the extened oilcover/tank on the transfer box i must admit i am ummimg and ring about it whats ur thoughts

    • @All4Overland
      @All4Overland  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Dave...i have thought about putting on the larger sump plate on the transfer box but like yourself i am in two minds about it...i regulary change the oil in the transfer box so the larger capacity would mean i would just be using more oil but i think if i was doing alot of towing then the larger capacity would help to keep the box cool so that what i am trying to say i am still in two minds about it..regards Paul

    Apropop nothing I bang 75w80 into everything, box, tr box, axels.. fresh 7580 beats knackered whatever whatever imo & I can't be bothered faffing about with different grades. Have owned LR's since 1984, never done any different (75w80) and never had an issue. Just my 2c.

    • @All4Overland
      @All4Overland  Před rokem +1

      Hi James ward....i can't argue with that clean oil of any description is better than dirty oil and its looks like we have probably owned land rovers for about the same amount of time and to be honest i used to put 75w80 in everything myself...but since we have been doing the long distance trips i try to put the correct oil in the right places to get the best performance out of the parts..regards Paul

      @@All4Overland They appear to be a disease. :-) I bought a span-new swb in 1984 - first time in a LR - a 2.25 petrol fresh off the production line.. it drove like absolute crap right out of the box... I spent all day today ( sunday, 38 years later) working on a Defender driveline - with the exact same vibe as that '84 swb.. cursing the quirks, but loving the vibe. :-)

    • @All4Overland
      @All4Overland  Před rokem +2

      @All4Overland  Před rokem

      Hi Jabber 1974...not much of a risk really both of these gearboxes were recon ones and had been lying on the workshop floor for a while so i knew they would come undone..regards Paul

    • @All4Overland
      @All4Overland  Před 2 lety

      Hi Stephen...no i did not fit new washers and i did not anneal the one on the drain plug cos like i said in the video i am only going to run her for a few miles and change the oil again and then will put a new strainer in and new washers...regards Paul
