Austrian side irrationally looked down on Turkey, even after the game. Look at their post match interviews. Their coach did not congratulate Turkish side and did not give enough credit to their effort. And their players as well. baumgartner says he is very very very disappointed. Why? You are not Spain or Germany. And Türkiye is not Georgia or Slovenia. Turkish clubs have always been in Champions League, European League etc. They are definitely more successful than austrian clubs, way more successful. Turkish National team played in semifinals in both World cup and Euro cup. So, what was he mumbling about? National team-wise austria belongs to the same category as Türkiye and that is a fact, there is nothing to be disappointed about. It is this stubborn and surreal attitude that got austria out of euros. Hope they their facts straight.

They were a bit too full of themselves and obviously didn't expect that level of a three-at-the-back defence. Early goal really helped Turkey, but they couldn't respond well to that in the first half at all. And second half, another corner goal, they just couldn't break down.

Do you saw the game, turkey came with the intention of running for a draw and advance via penalties as best option. The basically own goal in the first minute helped them, the clear penalty not given helped them and the rest was luck. Turkey brought nothing to the table and won.

Austria hasn't beaten Turkey for 40 years. The arrogant speeches of the Austrian coach and his fans are ridiculous. Austria is a team that runs hard, is physically strong, but lacks talent. While two 19-year-old Turkish players took part in the match, the average age of the team is 21-22. Despite this, they had been talking about the friendly match for a week and that you could easily beat Turkey. What was the result: emotional Austrian players cried after the match. Now let them celebrate the friendly match they won and one of the fastest goals in the history of the championship.

Nobody of us believes that just because we won this friendly match there is any advantage for us - and by the way, we won it way too high, the game could have developed into a completely different direction."
... but yeah, keep lying about how we underestimated you, were arrogant and talked only about the friendly match.
I really got to say directly after the match, I thought to myself "well done Turkey, good match, you've beat us fair and square, I hope you'll advance far in the tournament". Now that I've read a lot of comments like yours I hope you get kicked out by the Netherlands. I've never seen such bad winners. Instead of winning and be happy about it there are so many of you just whining and crying about how you don't get enought respect, how Austrian are so arrogant, about how Austrians were "talking about the friendly for a week" all based on lies and out of context citations.

Türkiye's early goal was of course a shock for the austrians, but when you look at the first 45 minutes as a whole, the austrians were quite surprised to see turkey playing in a 3 man defense and coming out fast with accurate passes from the foot. every time, Türkiye managed to break the front line pressure and move the ball forward. the match ended with Türkiye's tactical and tackling superiority in every aspect. We were reading the arrogant statements of the Austrians before the match, but the fact that they continued with the same arrogance after the match shows why they have failed all this time. Football punishes arrogance sooner or later.

To explain the result with passionate defending alone would miss the tactical aspect. As Gregoritsch said after the game, Austrians did not expect the opponent to start with 5-men backline, which a) in defense, diminished the effect of Austria's usual pressing, b) in offense, allowed to push Turkish wing-backs forward to build up play and relieve the center. Turkish team looked exceptionally disciplined. Considering that the second half was mostly one-sided, finishing ~100 minutes of gameplay with only 5 fouls is quite impressive.
As for the goals scored, clearly from the drawing board. There was another corner kick in the first half, which Güler aimed exactly at the same spot in front of near post.

it was fault of rangnick, he didnt give enough attention for turkey. in group stage games team plays with their standart formations ofc but in knockout rounds team will change formations for opponents' weakness. gregoritsch said after the game, we didnt expect turkey play with 5 chains in back. you are the favourite part on paper ofc, turkey will have plans for your weakness. even though Calhanoglu's suspension turkey played with good strategy. exactly same 2 corner goals also show that how much attention montella gives for Austria and how much attention rangnick give for turkey.

This is the second time something like this happens in less than 7 months (remember the Dest red card in a similar situation v. Trinidad?). The players basically decided to keep him at the helm after the controversy and the expiration of his contract, because they feel "comfortable" with him.
And, by now, it has become painfully clear that he doesn't have authority over this corps of players. . . He should be out! Berhalter should've been out!

Turkey knocked Austria out by Austria beating themselves once again. Austria has had the same issue all EUROs long, namely the defense being a disorganized mess, lacking passing quality, and not converting their chances to goals. It's always the same and it has been very frustrating to watch. Of course the save of the Turkish GK in the last moments of the game was epic, but Austria should have scored multiple goals before that. Today I woke up and was like "I can't believe that really happened".

      @MrReese Před 5 dny +4

@@orbit1894 Turkey did do everything right, but it was not up to them. Turkey did nothing for 85 % of the game, they got a lucky goal (it was basically an own goal of Austria) in the 1st minute and then defended with everything they had. Even if Turkey had a game plan, it went out of the window after the 1st minute.
Austria played their game the way they always do and when you look at the statistics it was actually the most "Austria-style" game of all games at the EUROs, they had an xG of 3.1 compared to the 0.9 of Turkey. That alone says everything when you look at the other games Austria played where they usually overperformed their xG.
Austria did not fail because of Turkey, they failed because of themselves. And of course that great save by the Turkish GK in the last minute.

Türkiye's coach's squad selection was problematic, his offensive plan was terrible, but he won despite all of this.
How did they win? With 2 goals from corners and a competitive play in the midfield. Moreover, since Türkiye had more technical players, it was able to keep the ball at its feet and maintain its scoring advantage.
Austria could not make enough attacks. He couldn't take advantage of the chances he had. I wrote everywhere that if they played 10 times, Austria would win 9 of them. Let's be realistic, as a Turk, I think so.
