    I'm not an emotional guy, but that moment in Ori shown at 2:45 is one the most brutal gut punches a game has ever made me feel. I was devastated. I'll never forget it. I started Hollow Knight a couple of weeks ago, and am having a hard time getting into it. This surprised me because I've heard it is very similar to Ori and I loved Ori. But playing Hollow Knight, I often feel bored and unmotivated. I don't feel any connection to the character, and I often don't know where to go next. Part of that is because I keep putting it down to play other games. Ori, on the other hand, really drew me in. I stuck to it and completed it over the course of a few days. Like you said, the story was simple but emotional. Maybe if I watch that Hollow Knight lore video it will help.

    • @nandanvinjamury
      @nandanvinjamury Před 5 měsíci +2

      How far into the game are you? I genuinely felt the same way because initially I struggled, the objectives weren't clear, and I was stuck on a certain part. I even dropped it for a year because I wasn't sure I would enjoy it. But after someone convinced me to return, I got past the part I was stuck on and it unlocked so much more all of a sudden. It genuinely gets so deep I felt dumb for not giving it the chance it deserved. I eventually over 100% it, so you might want to at least give it more of a chance (at least get to the 3rd boss of the mantis lords and you'll see how fun this game can be)

      @@nandanvinjamury I haven't played for a while. I got wrapped up in the Yakuza series. The most recent thing I remember doing was unlocking the ability to wall jump. I'm definitely going to get back to it at some point. Maybe I'll watch the lore video first so I feel more of a connection to the story. And while I generally dislike consulting guides, maybe I'll make an exception for this game so I can spend less time wandering around aimlessly, and more time progressing. Thanks for the feedback.

      @@Jayhawker2000while I advice not spoiling yourself on the story since discovery is one of the best thing about this game imo is the discovery, one advice I can offer is that buy pins to mark on your map or look at your map on places you havent been or couldn't get to because you didnt have certain abilities. HK is sorta linear up until you get the Mantis Claw (wall jump). The game lets go of you at that point and it's where players will have different paths depending on where they poke around. Most players tho will follow Hornet again to the right going thru this section that needs wall jump and into the City of Tears.
      HK is not as straightforward in telling you where to go unlike Ori and it's something i like better about it. Neighbouring areas are connected in some ways and it's what makes each player's playthrough unique. One way or another, you will always come back to the area again and it's truly the metroidvania experience.

    • @PDS350
      @PDS350 Před 4 měsíci +2

      I'll back up that other comment. Struggled to get into the game and after unlocking the walljump and another upgrade, I put it down for around a year.
      Someone pushed me to give it another try, and after just exploring for a while with an exploratory mentality everything clicked and that game became one of my favourites.
      What happens it that before the walljump is unlocked the game is pretty linear in its route, but after it *really* opens up.

      same I struggle to get into HK, nothing about it gave me the feeling that I want to play. I would add another category, something like, "world dynamic" or "characters" - and would give it to Hollow Knight, cause... well, the world and the characters feel more "alive" there, whereas in Ori they are more archetypical and don't have much depth. This feeling of the world was something very unique for me in Hollow Knight. To the point where I wouldn't even call it a game, per se, but something bigger. You almost have to be prepared and willing to live through Hollow Knight, which makes it hard to recommend it to casual players. And Ori is just a great game you can recommend to anyone. I guess, similar to how both Mozart and Michael Jackson are great, but in very different ways and for very different contexts. If you haven't played Outer Wilds - give yourself a treat (but don't look up ANYTHING about it)

    Ori: multimillion dollar major studio massive team release with decades of experience between them
    Hollow knight: handful of guys doing their first real video game in their lives funded by kickstarter for under $60k
    Hollow knight wins as the better game for this reason alone. Team cherry had next to no idea what they were doing, yet did it better than almost anyone has ever done and they made history doing it. another category could also be bonus content and cost.
    Ori was like $60 when it came out and as far as i know didn’t have any real DLC. Hollow knight was $15 and team cherry released like two whole video games worth of dlc for FREE!
    Hollow knight also wins as the better game for those reasons alone. Both ori games are masterpieces. but Hollow knight just set the bar so incredibly high it’s not really worth comparing it to anything else right now. or probably ever. Cuz other than silksong we’re never going to see a game of that scale with that much quality for that cheap ever again.

    "Ori is my favorite soundtrack in the history of video games. So, it's a tie." LoL Sorry, had to take a dig at you on that one!
    I wanted to talk a bit about the very different style of movement in these games and how it plays into the combat and platforming elements. A lot of people really like the tight control of HK and it's a big reason why those intricate boss fights work so well. By comparison, Ori has a much less precise and floaty acrobatic style to its movement that lends itself better to the creative platforming and dramatic escape sequences that replace boss battles in parts of the game. They feel so different that you're almost certain to prefer one over the other and they're also so central to the gameplay that this is likely to be as much of a deciding factor for the individual as elements like the soundtrack or visuals.

    I absolutely love Ori and still choose that game over Hollow Knight. And even though I haven’t played Hollow Knight, I will absolutely admit that the combat is miles better than Ori. But that’s about where it ends for me. The emotional masterpiece of a story from Will of the Wisps, the level design, the heart stringing soundtrack, and the art of the entire game just blows Hollow Knight out of the water in those aspects. Just from the gameplay I’ve seen around CZcams, Hollow Knight looks very very fun. And I love that dark and ominous vibe it seems to have. But Ori had my jaw on the floor for 95% of my playthrough and not to mention I most definitely cried at multiple parts throughout the game. It really can’t be understated how amazing that game is, and it’s a shame that it’s not even that popular. I think visuals is a pretty clear ori win. I mean, HK's artstyle might be unique in its own way, but the visuals in ori were just simply amazing.
    I'd give story to HK. Even though they kind of did a shitty job about telling us the story in HK, thanks to our savior Mossbag we know the storyline. Not saying ori's story is bad by any means, it's just most of the characters in ori weren't that interesting to me and I oftentimes found myself wanting to skip dialogues since they felt kinda meh and generic whereas at HK that was never the case.
    Soundtrack: Not differing but I just wanted to point out just how freaking brilliant the soundtracks were in both games...

    If we're talking about background elements influencing the story, the musical elements of Ori have to be considered. It uses of leitmotif like no other game, in so many ways. At the end of the game, it plays Ori, Lost in the Storm, which was the track at the very beginning of Ori and the Blind Forest, and that will forever hit like a punch in the stomach. Ori WotW is my favorite game of all time, but both games are great

    Hollow Knight is one the best games ever made. I love the way the player has to discover the story rather than being told everything. You gradually uncover more and more pieces and it just keep getting deeper and deeper until you finally reach the true end boss and it’s just a mind blowing experience when it all finally comes together. Ori is a great game as well, but you pretty much know the story by time the opening of the game is finished.

I genuinely think ori 1 is underrated, everybody is talking about 2 but like the story of 1? The soundtrack? Both is (in my opinion) more emotional than in 2, there aren't any bossfights, that's right, but you really don't miss them in 1, and everything is handdrawn. If you asked me which one I would pick and retry from the start, I would always go with one. 😊

    I 1st saw the game around 2015 Jackcepticeye Playing I absolutely loved the game and obsessed over it.
    2019 i bought the Sequel and got the Blind Forest definitive edition as well but i couldn’t play it at the time i only got to for a few mins
    Fast forward to 2023 I finally got to play it and continued where i left off, I Absolutely LOVED the Game, from start to finish everything else was super enjoyable and it became my most favorite game of all time ever, still is now after 6-7 months or so that i kept playing it again after i finished it, i played the Original as well “Blind Forest” it was good, but damn the Sequel really made the game 10x Better.
    I tried Hk after Ori blind forest and TWOTW, i was kinda part of the HK community at some point and also had knowledge about its deep lore already but never really got to play it, i enjoyed the game playing it blindly but a lot of my problems with the game on my 1st playthrough where progression and traveling, it became insanely tedious doing this things and doing it blind meant that a lot of it where me trying to figure out where i should go or what i should do that by the end i had to look things up just to progress because it got to the point that my whole run went from 26 hours which for me is long enough, the Bosses and Enemies didnt pose much of a problem tho i do loved the combat of it, it didn’t feel as good than i thought.
    I played the game again which i bought from Steam a Week From now, around 16 hours of playing it and about to fight the Hollow Knight after finishing a lot of the Quests and sides first, the game was a lot more enjoyable honestly, i still did some wiki on things that i forgot just to avoid a lot of downtime, and i also did some Modding with the game before i booted it up the 1st time on Steam
    With all of this Said Ori & TWOTW is still my Most favorite game of All time, the Combat is arguably not as good as Hk but damn its a lot more Satisfying for me, the Platforming is so damn good as well, The music… oh my god the Music is just THE BEST, the story was ok Oh and Progressing through the game Feels smooth as Butter and anything you do either it being sidequests collecting it all contributes to progressing and it never ever feels boring or Tedious AT ALL, and Finally the real reason why its my most Favorite of all Time its because of “Ori”, i cant stop obsessing about this Cute fella.

    Good video, but there were some points that really baffled me. The "iconic" category was basically a popularity contest. HK is more popular, so more iconic, so it won. Huh. Also you said Ori had your favorite game soundtrack of all time but still gave a tie. And saying Ori copied boss fights and melee combat from Hk? What? That makes literally no sense. Dark souls has bosses and melee combat, does that mean Hk copied those? No, it doesn't. Same for Ori. Otherwise, great video. I personally think that they are both goddamn masterpieces and deserve all they praise they can get.
    Edit: one more thing. I think one of the reasons hollow knight's combat is so amazing has a lot to do with how well designed its bosses are around said combat. If Ori had better bosses, it's combat would feel way better as a result. I would still give Hk the win in combat over Ori, but I think Ori's combat is hurt by it's just ok bosses. What I'm trying to say is, combat and bosses are very tightly linked. Bad combat, then bad bosses. Bad bosses, then bad combat. It's very much a dependant relationship.

    • @WyvrnOnYT
      @WyvrnOnYT  Před rokem +2

      That's why the iconic category only counted towards half a point.
      I did also say Ori and the Will of the Wisps had my favorite soundtrack of all time, but I didn't give Ori the win in that category because it's impossible to make an objective argument based on my personal preference.
      The Melee combat being added to Ori and the Will of the Wisps is still relevant to the discussion because of how drastic it is compared to Ori and the Blind Forest. It seems like the game tried to inch closer to Hollow Knight's gameplay. That's why I mentioned it, and I don't regret mentioning it.

    • @spoop7623
      @spoop7623 Před rokem +2

      @@WyvrnOnYT It is true that it is impossible to objectively say one thing is better than another based on subjectivity, and ori and Hk's ost's are no exception. I think the reason it tickled me the wrong way was because the whole video is all about deciding whether one this is better than another using subjectivity. What makes the ost's different? Not saying there isn't a difference, I just genuinely want to know why this decision was made.
      As for the combat, there were a lot of complaints about Blind forest's combat being pretty bad (which are all warranted, it was bad) so I think revamping the combat was always a priority with the sequel. Mossbag makes the same point in his video. The bosses one could make a case for ori taking inspiration, but I still wouldn't say that their inclusion makes ori less original than Hk in that aspect. You can't confirm that Hk got its ideas from dark souls, so you can't really do it for Ori either.
      Try not to take this as me just bashing on your video, I'm only voicing the negatives I thought which I now realize isn't totally constructive. There were a lot of points I agreed with, and it was a really neatly put together video. I really do love your content, I just really like discussing video games on the internet. Peace bro ❤

      @@spoop7623 Yeah. I noticed I should have cleared this up in the video, but:
      This video is my opinion, but I base my opinion on what I think is objectively correct. So in other words, I couldn't choose either soundtrack to be better than the other because I think they are both of the same quality. Ori's soundtrack is more of my "taste" which is why it's my favorite video game soundtrack of all time, but my opinion is that neither soundtrack is objectively better than the other.
      So basically, this video is my subjective opinion, but based on what I think is objective, and I couldn't find an objective argument for either soundtrack, so that's why I settled that segment with a tie. honestly i love both games. i really do. but if it is a vs it has to be hk for me. ori is a amazing game. the platforming is fluid and just great and def is the better gameplay mechanic then combat. and platforming is way better then hollow knights by a long shot. though i do still love hk's platforming. the story is good if u want one that plays on your heart strings. the graphics are vibrant, colourful beautiful, i love exploring the world and i love the music. sure combat in my opinion was lacking. more so with content for it. but overall it's an amazing game. and sure has some hk features that could be ripped off but that's not here or there cuz honestly i don't really care about that much at all. could make the same argument for any game. but to me at least it does feel kinda shoved in with the combat and shard mechanics. but i love shards cuz most times i just put on stuff to make parkour more fun so i don't really care i had fun with it.
    for hk it's def the one i played the most and the most rememberable out of the two for me. the decrepit dark cartoony artstyle works well and the music on top of it to me is godly. ori's story tugs on heartstrings a bit but to me doesn't hold a candle to the music alone. when i play hollow knight and hear the music god it makes me feel that it wants me to feel. if a game can do that u have done an amazing job. sure i like ori's soundtrack and it is good but honestly i can't really remember. any music of the game. which isn't to say it's bad. it just wasn't that rememberable. but more then that exploring it to me is more fun, fighting is more fun with rememberable boss fights and i remember all of it. and the content in it is so much it's crazy how this is the price it is. but more then that god the story.
    these two games play on different themes so it just depends which one u like more but in my opinion hk is better. and i love both a lot. exploring the world and learning about it as u go with what u find on lore tablets or lore from npc's. u puzzle it together to make sense of what happened in this kingdom. what happened to these bugs who now attack u. and learning why the knight is here at all and learning more about the knight as we go on. the story isn't flat out told to us. and we as the player can make headcannons of the story of the stuff we learn. and it'll probably be accepted. it's like endings. there is no "true" ending. it's really whatever u like most. they give you the tools for a story and then u as the player can make it. and that is magical. i love stuff like that. there's nothing wrong with ori's story at all. i just like the way hk does it's story telling better and allows freedom into thinking what u wanna think it is. as long as it makes sense.
    as npc standpoints go i like both but again i just like hk's better. more memorable. i also think exploring hk is more fun then ori. cuz i can't really remember much from ori's world at all other then a few places.
    honestly both are amazing games and if u haven't played them u def should. and this is also my opinion too. it's fine if u like ori over hollow knight. nothing wrong with it at all. if ori is the type of game that hits u like hk does for me. that's great! just out of the two for me hollow knight was more rememberable and also more enjoyable and is just more of my game then ori is. i do think ori is way easier then hk. which to me ruins it a bit more so with the gameplay mechanic they put in it but eh. oh i also don't get the dark souls comparison to hk people make. the only thing they have in common is the shade where u lose ur money when u die and souls u lose when u die. and have to go back to the location u died to get it. and also it being difficult. but i just don't get it at all. i could go on and on but honestly i think i said all i needed to on this. if u read this all to the end then thanks!! i know it was long haha! anyway seeya!

      In this video, I mentioned that Ori and the Will of the Wisps is my favorite videogame soundtrack of all time. However, both games have an incredibly impressive orchestra, and no soundtrack is objectively better than the other.
      For the visual conversation, Ori and the Will of the Wisps is also one of my favorite games in terms of how beautiful it is, but you must understand that visuals are including graphics, performance, and art style. While Ori is the more "Beautiful game", Hollow Knight's art style is a lot more original and unique. Also, certain versions of the Will of the Wisps have framerate issues (The Switch version) Whereas Hollow Knight is absolutely rock solid across all platforms.

    Ori definately has the better soundtrack and it's visuals are far superior, I feel like using its performance on the nintendo switch as a factor in ranking visuals is a little bit of looking for an excuse to not lose hollow knignt a point. Also, personally I'd divide story into three sections: story, lore and characters, with Ori winning story, Hollow knight winning lore, and it'd be a toss up for characters, though I'd favor Ori because half of hollow knight's characters are designed to lack personality. Plus, the villains in both Ori games have really compelling stories and motivations, whereas the hollow knight itself is a nearly blank character being puppeted by a god who is, itself lacking in character.

Not neccessarily saying Ori has more rich or memorable NPC's, but I do feel they're on fairly equal footing. My main point about characters was really based on the fact the Ori games have much more complex villains, the Hollow Knight is almost totally hollow as the name implies, and the Radiance is just a scorned god angry that the bugs stopped worshipping her. The DLC's may have added a good deal more, but if we include Hollow knight's DLC's then I'd say it's fair to also include both Ori games and at that point I still think Kuro surpasses Grimm.

      I thank you for the kind words, but I also disagree. In fact I'm not sure if I said this in this video, but I actually prefer Ori and the Will of the Wisps from a personal standpoint. Ori and the Will of the Wisps is my favorite Metroidvania.
      The reason it lost this comparison was pretty simple: This wasn't a favorites comparison, this was an objective comparison. And objectively speaking, Hollow Knight is the better video game overall, without any bias.
      So if there's any bias in this video, it would most likely be in favor of Ori and the Will of the Wisps

      Why? Ori's visuals were obviously more complex to make, but complex does not automatically mean better. HK is aesthetically more pleasing to my eyes despite its simplicity.

    Heard great things about Ori and the Will of the Wisps...then I played it. And it's one of the few video games I didn't like.
    It's a beautiful game, but far too linear. The story is also lackluster. I ran into a bunch of bugs, which surprised me, considering the development team was pretty large, and that's unacceptable. The combat was okay, and I could see the amount of work they put into it, but it just didn't feel great. It seemed more for spectacle and lacked fluidity.
    The music also wasnt memorable for me, either.
    It's not a bad game, but certainly not in the same league as Hollow Knight.

    for me hollow knight is the best game out of the 3 while ori has some cool stuff the combat is far too easy and even platforming I felt like it never challenged me a lot while it was still satisfying
    subjective of course but for me challenge matters quite a lot in terms of enjoying the game as long as it is fair but ori was still a really enjoyable run with good story and fun journey for the most part

If you don't fight Kwolok and Mora(Correct me if I'm spelling their names wrong, it's been a while)immediately after unlocking the second half of the game, they get destroyed really easily, while the first two bosses of the game get destroyed easily no matter what. The final boss manages to stay relevant no matter what your equipment is mainly because you can die instantly in the last phase.
      But even if you do fight all the bosses at your weakest, I think that Kwolok is the only good boss in the game. I would have happily replaced all of the others with escape sequences.

    I get that you wanted to give a tie in both graphics and music but come on its not even close. I get that hollow night goes for a much different art style than ori. But god. Both Ori games are some of the most beautifull games on the market EVER. And for the music part well its close like you said. But when i played Ori ( both games ) I got goosebumps like all the times. I Didnt get the same feeling with HN. But dont get me wrong I just finished my firts playtrough of HK and the music is very good. So in my opinion, Hollow Knight excels in the better categories to make a good videogame ( combat - bosses - level design and overall content) and ori excels in the artistic point of view ( visuals, music, emotions oh and platforming like you said. But the bosses, Jesus Christ do they have way too much health, I died to the first boss twice, and Howl only needs to be only cut down to half health.
    The main combat, it's alright, and the best part of the magic is how the healing heals for 3 relatively quick whereas Hollow Knight's takes more time.
    The Platforming is wonderful, but I got stuck on a part with a pink/purple breakable wall right before the third area in the game, I have no idea how to break it.

    Hollow knight has a godly fighting system with the nail and spells, but falls short on exploration and progress. Because you don't get significantly stronger in the game, your progress is kinda tied to your charms more than to your abilities.
    9,5/10 in combat
    6,5/10 in exploration. Cool game and silksong will be 10/10.

    You made sense until you suspected that Ori took the idea of having bosses from Hollow Knight. Almost all games have bosses. In what way does the bossfights in Ori resemble the ones in Hollow Knight? They are not balanced the same way. Most bosses in Ori are massive. Most bosses in HK is not. HK have many bosses, Ori does not. Moon studios set out to do a great platformer with the Blind forest. For the sequel they instead wanted to do a great metroidvania. They had the experience of the first game. They knew what was lacking and what was missing. They knew what the fanbase thought of the first game. They knew the fighting wasnt great in Blind forest. They knew they didn't have proper bosses. They looked at several other metroidvanias and borrowed or stole ideas from them. Including bosses wasn't something they took specifically from HK.
