The Vedas (knowledge) are a large body of religious texts originating in ancient India. Composed in Vedic Sanskrit, the texts constitute the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism.
The Artharva Veda(“knowledge of Atharvan”) Samhita is the text belonging to the Atharvan and Angirasa poets. It differs significantly from the first three in that it concerns itself with magical spells to ward off evil spirits or danger, chants, hymns, prayers, initiation rituals, marriage and funeral ceremonies, and observations on daily life. It has about 760 hymns, and about 160 of the hymns are in common with the Rigveda.
It is thought that the work was composed by an individual (possibly Atharvan but not likely) or individuals about the same time as the Sama Veda and Yajur Veda (c. 1200-1000 BCE). It is comprised of 20 books of 730 hymns some of which draw on the Rig Veda.
This recording was received from Dr. N. GopalaKrishnan (Senior Scientist in CSIR), director of Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage.

The Rig Veda has 10,552 mantras grouped into 1028 suktas or hymns each having roughly ten mantras.
The suktas are further grouped into 10 mandalas.
Rig veda has only Rik mantras which have a metrical structure. Of these 2456 mantras are in the well known Gayatri meter ( The popular Gayatri mantra is also in this meter).
As per Shri Aurobindo Ghosh , Rik is the mantra of divine consciousness.Its brings its light of revelation.
There are around 400 rishis in the rig veda of whom atleast 25 are women.
The Yajur Veda primarily consists of Yajus mantras which are rhythmic phrases not set to any particular meter ( Unlike Rig Veda)
The popular Taittiriya Samhita of Krishna Yajur Veda has around 4773 mantras , of which around 2/3 rd are yajus mantras ( rest are Riks)
The Yajur Veda deals with Yajna or rituals to appease devatas
The Sama Veda consists of Riks with the added dimension of music.
The Atharva veda has 5987 mantras grouped into 730 suktas and 20 Kandas ( Chapters)
Most of the mantras were revealed to the lineage of Rishis Atharva and Angirasa.
It contains knowledge of healing, construction (Vastu) and societal conduct amongst others
There are three types of Vedic Mantras
Rik - Mantras set to a particular meter like Gayatri
Yajus - Mantras in Prose form not in any particular meter
Saaman - Mantras used for singing
Rig Veda Samhita has only Rik mantras, Yajur Veda Samhita has both Yajus and Rik mantras , Sama Veda Samhita has Saman mantras while Atharva Veda Samhita consists mainly of Riks and some Yajus.

It is chanting of slokas ( verses) in Sanskrit language from Vedas. There are four Vedas ( Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, Adharvana Veda, Rug Veda )
It needs expertise, total devotion to learn from childhood and practise regularly for many years under guidance of an experienced Guru ( A dedicated teacher )

I have a question:
In the introduction it is stated that Sama and Yajur Veda were composed c1200-1000BCE.
How is this possible?
The three Veda were fully extant during the reign of Lord Shree Rama and are referred to multiple times in Ramayana.
But since Rama lived at the end of Treta Yuga, the Veda must be at least 800000 years old.
The Veda are also referred to as the basis of life in the Mahabharata the events of which took place at least 5000 years ago.
Even Western historians in their lack of understanding acknowledge this.
So how can it be said that their composition is posterior to their use in everyday life?
