- I am frequently asked the dimensions of the flags. In this video I give the exact measurements and details of the four different sized flags that I make. Below are the written dimensions
The small flag is 13" x 24.5"
The strips are 1" each
The stars are .7" each
The union is 7" x 8.5"
The medium flag is 19.5" x 37"
The strips are 1.5" each
The stars are 1.1" each
The union in 10.5" x 13"
The large flag is 26" x 48"
The strips are 2" each
The stars are 1.4" each
The union is 14" x 17"
The XLarge flag is 35.75" x 72"
The strips are 2.75" each
The stars are 2" each
The union is 19.25" x 23"
The Jumbo flag is 48” x 96”
The strips are 3.75” each
The stars are 2.5” each

Mr Furr....great video and love your work! You may want it take a look at the medium sizing you posted....I get a union of 10.5 x 14.82. I took notes on your sizing and I believe you posted 10.5 x 13.
Yeah it should be what you posted for the medium Union. There is a free online calculator that if you put in any one number (like strip width at 1 1/2”), it will tell you all the correct dimensions.
Your videos were the first I watched on making rustic flags.

You say your first flags looked boxy bc of the union size, were you sizing it based on the government specs? I have been using that formula to do my flags and it is definitely a different look! I appreciate the videos! I watched a lot on these and I went with your design to base mine off of but like you said the process is always changing! I love the US flag but being from Texas i figured out real quick that lone star flags are a bit more popular here! Keep up the good work man and keep the videos coming! Can't wait to see that 8 footer!

Yes. If would give the ones that would love to make one but may need a little experience so that feel secure about the next one . I have done a few this spring,but nothing like yours. I have the Dremel 3000 and a small touch so I'm ready to try. Do you send out complete instructions with photos when someone purchases your stencils? That's another way I would love to use also. To be accurate the "fly" portion of the union on a flag that is 19.5"x37" should be 14.82". This can be calculated by using the information found at www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq3.html

I just watched a few of your videos. Could you please tell me where I can purchase the star stencil and the price?
I’m doing a cornhole board 24” x 48” how long would the union be? I know the height just not sure how long
So many numbers spouted off so quickly.....my ignorant brain can not comprehend, lol. Math is the worst for me but I so appreciate this video of explaining this. I'm making my 2nd flag ever and I feel like I'm struggling with accurate sizing for sure.

The Furrminator I was interested in using it as a coffee table I am a pipe fitter so I can make the legs for it but I really like your work and I think it could be pretty cool as a coffee table
What size Wood is preferred for each size ? I use 2x4 for the medium size
Ok, well after ordering small/med/large to make my flags I found that none of them will work. I am using 1x2" furring strips from Lowes/HD for my first flag and the first 7 boards (Union) come to 9.5" wide. To big for the small, to small for the med templet. I have no way to cut down any bigger strips because my work shope is a 8x10 shed that also keep yard stuff in, so I do most of my work outside and I do not have a table saw. With that said, I am not a happy camper (my error not yours), but you might want to make a templet that will work for those of us that use the strips as they come from the store. Other then that I am well pleased with the quality and speed of getting them to me.
Sounds like your first flag is going to be the medium. I’m not sure why the furring strips aren’t consistent in width from the store but I’ll be glad to send you one that will work for what you have there. I have recently created a stencil just for this issue due to a few other people facing the same issues. Email me at thefurrminator@gmail.com so we can confirm your address and get it out to you.
Hoping I can get a response on here. I've tried you on Facebook a couple of times with different questions, but got no response. I've bought a few of your stencils, and noticed you have a "Jumbo" star stencil listed in your store. Do you have those dimensions for everything listed somewhere else? Any video of one? I'd love to see what it looks like! I might consider getting one of those off of you next. And would you mind sharing what brand the stencil material is? I think my cutter could handle it... Would like to try making a larger USMC stencil, some other military related, etc.
Bit of advice for others to save hassles with trying to get the colored wood stain that Jeff uses.... Both Lowes & Home Depot sell the same stuff, however Lowes uses the color names that Jeff states. Home Depot goes by their given names from Minwax and has no clue about the names offered by Lowes. After a couple wasted trips and searching the internet and Minwax's website and calling them, it appears Lowes has just changed up the names of the colors. Also HD is almost $2 cheaper per can.
556 nomad you caught me at the right time. I apologize for the delay, I have actually recently hired someone to assist with all of the emails, comments and messages that I obviously haven't been able to keep up with. I don't have those listed anywhere but I am going to make a 4' x 8' flag really soon and put that build on my channel with the details. I'm also going to post a video with the details about the stain you mentioned, probably today or tomorrow as soon as the stain dries.

Jeff I'm making a flag I want the strips to be 1 3/4" for a total with of 22 3/4. What would the dimensions of the union need to be? What would the length of the flag be to look right? What size would the stars need to be? Do you have stencils for the size of the stars I could print out or order?
Carey Lewis I would make the flag 40" long to keep it from looking too square or boxy. After doing the math, here is what I came up with for the union Union
12.25" high
14.5" wide
Stars 1.2" each

1 x 2 x 8-ft Furring Strip (Common); 0.75-in x 1.5-in x 8-ft (Actual) . Are these what you are speaking of or is it better to rip 1" X 6" X 8' into true 2 " strips? Thanks, Bob in Tampa
To get a better quality board, rip your own 1.5” strips but the furring strips do work good. 1.5” wide is the size you need

3.2 feet, roughly comes out to 3 ft 2 1/2 inches.
How do you prevent the chance of the flag warping/cuffing ?

I'm having trouble finding furring strips for the small flag. For some reason I can't find the 1" strips.
Usually these strips are cut down to size at home. maybe the hardware store could rip them for you if you don't have a table saw. Firring strips typically come in 1" x 2" or 1" x 3". actual measurements are short of that so keep that in mind. i believe 1"x2" are actually 7/8" x 1 1/2".
