    I already liked Ei's first story quest and the hints for her character growth that was to come, but this quest exceeded all the expectations I had.
    The voice acting, the lore, the... everything, even. I love me some grief narratives, and Ei's is one that hits very close to home for me personally.
    Ei acknowledging her mistakes and vowing to make up for them was monumental step forward for her, and ir makes me emotional no matter how many times I rewatch this quest. "I am one who promised a dream to her subjects... Raiden Ei!" gives me shivers every single time, dude.
    Ei metaphorically and literally stepping into the light from the shadows of her past... not letting it dictate her rule over Inazuma... this is such good development for her. After her first quest I hoped so bad she would rule Inazuma herself rather than leaving it all to the Shogun, and that is now coming true and it makes me SO glad.
    Also I LOVE the Shogun puppet's characterisation here, too. She has her own will, and her becoming Ei's shadow is poetic. I love them both to pieces. This quest really gave me everything I could have wished for in terms of Ei's growth.
    ON A DIFFERENT NOTE. THE SHOGUN AND EI DUKING IT OUT FOR 500 YEARS WAS FUCKING SICK

      The only thing I'm still hung up about is that for all the time she spent acknowledging how she failed the people of Inazuma in the past, she hasn't once acknowledged her greatest failure: ending a significant amount of Inazuman lives over a civil war that was utterly meaningless.
      Ei (not the Shogun) specifically mentions that she knew that the Fatui and Tenryou Commission intel was BS, but she let it go anyway because she didn't see it as a threat to eternity. Meanwhile soldiers, both resistance members as well as her own army, were dying for a false cause. Then, because the Traveler beat her in a duel, she stops the war and the decree and acts as though life should return to normal?
      I did like how the story quests gradually had Ei change her mind over time, and have her realize that eternity doesn't mean stasis. But when she realizes that, you would think she'd have a moment when she goes, "Oh, if my ideas were wrong, that means I sent my soldiers to die for nothing." Instead she decides to open the country and (if the rumors are true) hold a festival as if nothing bad happened.
      Ei spent so much time honoring the soldiers from 500 years ago. What about the soldiers she sentenced to death just last week? And what about their families? Sucks to suck, I guess. The whole thing is reminiscent of the Vietnam War, when Americans lost faith in the government and military after they sent people to die horribly in a pointless war. If this were realistic, there would be at least a current of resentment against the Shogunate, but Inazumans aren't coded with any emotion other than devotion to the Shogun.
      Ei has yet to confront the real consequences of her past ideology and the Vision Hunt Decree. I'm hoping that it will be explored in another story quest, but I doubt it - Zhongli stopped at two, and Venti didn't even get more than one (although that one is arguably the best one). Genshin seems to be signaling that Ei's character arc is complete now, when it really shouldn't be.

      @SonnyFRST Před 2 lety +55

      In my case it wasn't so much as "hate" but being bothered by something in the narrative.
      Initially, I thought it was BS how Ei got off scot free despite knowingly letting the Civil War happen. There was also the fact that Kokomi was deceived like a little bitch by the Fatui, which didn't help her with the sales issues she had in her initial run.
      It wasn't until I saw that they were getting a run together (and I got over my initial gripes with the two) that my brain finally linked the dots: _their roles in the narrative got swapped._ The mighty but clueless warrior pulled a 5D chess move on the Fatui while the genius strategist fell hook, line and sinker for a rather basic scheme.
      I'm still thinking this up, but more and more I get the feeling the story got mixed up or something. (it could be used to explain Ei's moral deficit towards the civil war, the Resistance showing up out of nowhere in front of the palace, etc)

    • @MagusInfermore
      @MagusInfermore Před 2 lety +80

      @@SonnyFRST Ei getting away 'scott free' starts to make sense when you realise she is the the deity of Inazuma. She isn't a political leader you can oust like you can IRL. Not only will she smite you where you stand if you stand up to her rule, the people have also been indoctrinated to blindly believe her. You can see that in the reverence her people treat her with when she asks them to just treat her like an equal in conversation. They are even fearful of her as if she is a force of nature.
      That said, it's not like no one has disagreed with her decisions. The resistance was formed because people like that exist. Even to this point of the Inazuma plot, the resistance hasn't magically merged back with the rest of Inazuma peacefully, there is still tension between them and Narukami Island.

      @SonnyFRST Před 2 lety +6

      @@MagusInfermore I said I already let Ei's karma-tax evasion go, but if you insist it doesn't have to be political ousting or beat the shit outta her. Some form of narrative punishment would've surficed.
      Second, the Narukami/Dangonomiya feud has been going on for ages and had little to do with the Vision/Sakoku so I don't think it applies in this case. Methinks you should've gone with Ayaka and Yae as examples.

    • @kylesmith987
      @kylesmith987 Před 2 lety +40

      @@SonnyFRST Yeah I personally think too many people got hung up on the idea that she didn't have consequences but never thought how do you punish a literal god. To me it wasn't so much that she didn't have consequences but more so that you literally have no means to punish her. Its not like she stopped being the deity of Inazuma. She is still the one in power. All we did was change her mind on the vision hunt decree.
      Also it was weird that people thought the story was over at that point in time when we knew that we had a year worth of Inazuma content to come. To me it very clearly felt like we still had more story to go regarding Ei.

    • @MagusInfermore
      @MagusInfermore Před 2 lety +15

      @@SonnyFRST Sanganomiya and Narukami have been at odds for a long time yes, that's precedent for people not liking how the Shogun runs things. But it also reflects the current crisis because the Vision Hunt Decree has caused Narukami Islanders to defect to Watatsumi to fight against it. Now that the major fighting has stopped, some of these defecters are even still conflicted on whether or not they should return to Narukami.
      As for a so-called narrative punishment, what kind of punishment can you install that wouldn't be a small slap on Ei's wrist? No one involved in the Inazuma conflict had the means to do much of anything that would have any lasting effect. Even the Fatui had to tiptoe around her with sabotage to get her to do what they want, and when she was challenged directly... Well, Signora died for that. You could remove her status as Archon, but again no one could really do that.

    I never understood this. It was an unfair criticism imo. Both Zhongli and Venti we meet and bond with during the archon quest, meanwhile Ei was our enemy.

      @@enesjei All of that is untrue, and this is exactly what you people who complained about part 1 are so wrong about.
      Part 1 hinted to part 2 perfectly, with the Shogun acting weird, and Ei admitting the reason to be because she is trying to modify the puppet.
      You then go out together, for the Shogun to catch up on Inazuma, after being gone for centuries. Also, this shows us an even greater difference in the personality of Ei and the Shogun, further leading to the conflict of part 2.
      She confronts the Kujo clan guy and shutting down the people trying to use the aftermath of the Vision hunt decree to gain more power, showing that Ei is taking responsibility, unlike the Shogun, who acts only in the way she was designed, upholding eternity, and everything else being whatever to her.
      Ei is out in public and acting warm with her people, and taking responsibility, no longer in the shadows.
      This whole part 1 shows Ei becoming more like Makoto, meanwhile the puppet remains her old self.
      So, when part 2 begins, taking place some time after part 1, we find out that Ei is being suppressed by her puppet, this as a direct result of part 1.
      We go to confront her, Ei VS the Shogun, or rather symbolizing Makoto VS Ei. Ei finally understands how Makoto felt, and the last bit of her powers showed itself to her, as Makoto did not believe Ei would listen to her back then (similar to how Shogun did not listen to Ei).
      Not to mention, it was also important we got to know her like Venti and Zhongli (who you get to bond with in the archon quest, unlike Ei) so that she would open up to us about this.
      You think Ei would be like "I need to fight my other self" and reveal sensitive information about her sister's passing to a person who was just her enemy? Come on!
      Without part 1, she'd ACTUALLY be an uwu waifu character, as she'd blindly just have 100% trust in the main character for no other reason than us being the main character.
      Not to mention, it would be rushed. You telling me the puppet got the better of Ei, RIGHT after abolishing the vision hunt decree? That'd make her look incredibly weak, and again, even more uwu waifu who needs the help of the strooong MC despite being a literal god.
      You people who all complain "it was just a dating sim" missed the entire point with part 1. You probably just saw angry tweets about it, and jumped on the bandwagon without any critical thinking, because you clearly didn't pay attention.

    Imagine, if the one who killed Makoto was our sibling... And, imagine, if Ei found out...
    Also, regarding the Great Sakura Tree, here's what I believe, to be the reason why it went back in time:
    1. There is another realm existing in another dimension, intertwined with all possible realities and time. Another plane of existance linking to all the moments in history and what is yet to come. I believe Makoto's plane of conciousness is a part of this realm. (Hinted by Miko's words regarding 'place' and 'time' as well as the mirror shards we see when we travelled within the realm. Indicated that there is more than one plane of conciousness and moment.)
    2. In this realm, the concept of time and space is not normal and has it's own laws. As the Traveler said, time flows both forward and backward. I believe Istaroth's power is at play here as he/she is the old god of time and Ei suspected that Makoto received some kind of help from Istaroth.
    3. Anything happened in this realm may also be linked to the outside realm or 'reality'. However, since the concept of 'normal time flow' is not present, any event happened in this realm will simply 'exist' in the related outside reality with no definition of 'when'. It will simply be recognized that it has existed in 'past, present and future'. (Again, due to Istaroth's powers.)
    4. Those within the realm will perceive the 'reality' different from those outside since they 'witness' the event.
    That is why Ei is the only one who suddently sees the Sakura Tree popped out of nowhere while the others will simply said that the Tree was already there but no one remembers when.
    However, she cannot comprehend the cause of it at that time since 'the event' she is meant to act has not yet happened in the timeline of the normal reality world.

Not to mention that the story quest is relatable because everyone has lost a sibling or a loved one. And, I feel like we can relate on a personal level with ei. They did a really good job.

    I honestly haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else to the point where I'm just marveling to myself but can we all just come to terms with the fact that Ei withdrawing into herself, renouncing her physical form, replacing it with a puppet that automates her day-to-day life and refusing to come out and open up to anyone while being unable to deal with the grief of her loss, refusing help from her only friend to the point of cutting all contact and rejecting the real world to the point where she would much sooner protect the concept of "Inazuma" than her people in a misguided attempt to hold on to something from her sister due to her inability to process said loss is just all a big and obvious metaphor for depression as a mental illness?
    Her followup quests are then her way of seeking help, fighting her inner demons (ironically her physical form, the Shogun, now a reflection of her past, suffering self) and struggling for a way to move on with her life, down to the point where, regardless of how strong she is, she still needed outside interference in the form of Yae Miko and the main character to find a way to move onward and come to terms with Makoto's death.
    Only thing missing is the professional therapist to help keep her on the straight and narrow. I vote for Zhongli -- dude has his stuff put together and has experienced plenty of loss so I think he'd be the best option to help her. Venti'd probably just recommend that she drown her sorrows in booze and I hear electricity and alcohol don't mix well.

    • @effortlessfury
      @effortlessfury Před 2 lety +2

      Ei's story is one of grief and an inability to move on. She ran from her problems until they finally caught up to her and she was forced to confront them head on. Her story, and Inazuma's story, are highly symbolic, reflecting the dangers of isolationism and rigidity, and how pain and loss can lead people to these behaviors, even the ones with the best of intentions. Genshin's story overall is one that is meant to reflect many aspects of our world and has much to say about how we as a people can try to fix what is broken.

    I feel it's less that we travelled through time, more like, Makoto's plane of consciousness existed outside the flow of time. So the past, present, and future all exists simultaneously. I guess it's the same concept of the Altar of Heroes in Fate series, or that Dark God thingy that Dr Strange bargained with in Marvel's Cinematic Universe. Only Ei and Raiden Shogun's own sense of time passing lets them feel like 500 years has passed
    Theoretically, when entering again with Yae's help, we could end up at any point inside this space. I think the wish to "bring Ei back" brought us to the point where the deadlock is about to be broken, and maybe act as a signpost to return to the correct time. If Ei was by herself, it won't be weird if she only returned 500 years later, because she felt like 500 years have passed

Blue Dream is my favorite soundtrack in all of the Inazuma tracks, and now it seems like it is Makoto's official theme, while Ei's is the one that we hear in her teaser/demo. When Yae states that she sensed the anomalies in the flow of time wiithin that space... the traveler wasn't alone... and i'm sure the traveler wasn't the only one repeating the wishes to themselves in their minds...as they and Paimon were trying to go to save Ei... alot of interesting things happened here...or maybe i'm just thinking way too much on this part lol

    I think people complained about the first Raiden Shougen quest because they treat Genshin as a regular RPG. Instead, Hoyoverse is making Genshin a living world where time flows with the real world.
    I first noticed it during the release of the dragon spine where Sucrose asked you to go check up on Albedo in the event and the second part was locked for 7 days. When you start the second part, Sucrose came to you and asked if you found anything during the last week.
    So for Raiden Shougen, her idea of eternity is something she believed for hundreds maybe even thousands of years, it's not going to change instantly just because someone said something. Just like the beginning of this quest shown, she's been thinking and walking around Inazuma for the last few months before finally changing her mind. This is how a real person should respond.
    This is also why Tectone's recent video tilted me a bit where he said all the quests are bad because you spend most of the time talking to faceless NPCs. That's equivalent to saying it's worthless to talk with people you meet on the street because I've never seen them and they are not important.
    Hoyoverse already told everyone their goal on their company website. They're trying to create a living virtual world. So experience the world they created like a real world, don't speed run it like you wouldn't in real life.

    • @wisechoice8
      @wisechoice8 Před 2 lety +5

      exactly, well said.
      Tectone's point is straight up a shallow perspective.
      these NPC's draw out the playable character's personalities, backstories and influence to people around them in a realistic manner.
      they expect these characters to open up on a stranger (traveler) about personal stuff on the get-go, and that's just not how relationships work. Hoyoverse isn't following the shonen anime troupe, lol.

    While I was initially annoyed at her story quests blocking the Chasm quest (that’s why I played them,) this quest redeemed not only that, but also her as a character to me.

    istaroth is the god of time, and its likely makoto sought her out
    SPOILER BELOW:
    Istaroth is a god with control over time and wind, and is likely one of the four shining shades of the Primordial One.She is known by a plethora of titles, including the God of Moments, the God of Time (alternatively, Master of Time or Ruler of Time), Kairos, the Thousand Winds of Time (or simply the Thousand Winds),Tokoyo Ookami, and the Undying Wind.
    She has been worshipped in Mondstadt and Enkanomiya both before and concurrently with the rise of The Seven. Both the worship of her and even the knowledge of her existence has been all but forgotten in Mondstadt, though her legacy has been subtly preserved through phrases related to "the winds of time. The people of Enkanomiya continued worshipping her even after being separated from the surface world, seeing her as the only one who had not forsaken them. The practice seems to have waned following Orobashi's appearance and disappeared altogether after the move to Watatsumi Island.
    After the arrival of the first throne of the heavens, the Primordial One appeared and fought against the Seven Sovereigns of the old world. To that end, it created four shining shades of itself, one of which was Istaroth. 40 years after the Primordial One's appearance, the Seven Sovereigns were vanquished and the seven nations submitted to its authority. Istaroth may have contributed to the new world the Primordial One made.
    Following the arrival of the Second Who Came and the catastrophe that followed, Istaroth presumably participated in the war on the Primordial One's side against the Second Who Came. In the midst of the massive destruction, the land of Enkanomiya sank below the waters and was cut off from Teyvat.

She goes very well in team with Eula for easy superconduct and physical resistance shred, plus she's a great battery for any character that has high burst costs and energy issues. Best weapon for her would be Engulfing Lightning, but if you don't feel like getting scammed on the weapon banner, I highly suggest you spend some time with fishing (use Thoma for that juicy fishing bonus) and get The Catch. Its a great f2p weapon for Raiden.

    36:01 I just got back to some old quest after the events of sumeru via those videos and this particular moment strikes me. She has no memories of a tree that everyone else remembers as being there forever. Just like Nahida. I don't believe we all time-traveled in the past in the end of the quest, it was just an illusion. An illusion casted by Makoto as a last gift for her sister. And I think the sakura tree is a remnant of her.
    1:09:04 and this is just like chapter 3 act 2
