  • Between 1980 and 2020, the cost of higher education increased nearly 170%, leading more students towards vocational schools to learn a trade skill, like electricians and plumbers.

    In my trade I don’t make 100k, but pays me more than enough to invest, pay my bills, have no debt, have my weekends free, and don’t take work home with me. In university I could had been a nurse, teacher, scientist, etc… but they treated me more as piggy bank for profit purposes, and always finding all types of excuses to raise tuitions, twisting requirements to take classes that we don’t needed, many having to take more loans/debt, for jobs that don’t pay enough. Sadly, when I was attending college there were teachers whom belittle many of these trade jobs, thus students copy and pasting the same behavior and disrespect, and that is a huge problem too.

    • @jackwindensky5606
      @jackwindensky5606 Před 24 dny +1

      @@ArizonaSquatch Fair point, but my concern goes beyond just whether certain degrees should exist. The bigger issue is that colleges often don't deliver on the promises they make about the content and value of their degrees. Even within the supposedly relevant courses, they teach concepts that aren't particularly useful for their given field. For example, while it's understandable that a race car driver should learn about engines, this knowledge cannot come at the expense of omitting core racing fundamentals, especially when the goal is to become a professional driver. Worse still, devoting the majority of a degree to learning about engines instead of actual racing skills is a misallocation of focus. This was what my degree in Computer Science was like and I'm confident other degrees have this issue as well. That is, degrees are so inflated with courses that add little to no value, and the gap between what they teach and the skills needed in the real world is so vast that it borders on gross negligence. To top it off, they charge exorbitant prices to do so.

      It doesn't make sense for a student to pay thousands of dollars of tuition to major in something with a low ROI. It's a major scam for top universities to charge tuition rates for a program with a low ROI compared to another with a higher ROI. I also notice counselors/career experts telling students a certain % of successful Americans obtained a degree, but it doesn't mean their degrees are the reason they are so successful. They could have a Bachelor's in Literature but eventually become successful a operations manager through time and experience.

      Yeah, but e.g. in Austria it's slightly different. Here you are allowed to start an apprenticeship at 15 after 9 years of school. You will work in a company and go to "trade school" for a couple of weeks/months per year. Usually this takes 3-4 years. Your salary ist not great, but kids usually stay with their parents. After 3-4 years you have an exam and then you are allowed to work as e.g an electrician. After that you may continue studying and become a master. But there are many different options in Austria. 5 year technical schools from 14-19 or combination of working at a company and technical school. Afterwards you could also go to university/college full or part-time.

    I remember growing up, there was a stigma with people going to trade school as being unintelligent. They need to bring more of these school. People need to learn to work with their hands and learn to fix things on their own. Its builds character and mental toughness. This has become a lost artform and this generation have become a group of sissies that need to rely on others to do things instead of figuring out how to do things for themselves
