Heh. Made me smile.
Haha, thanks for the chuckle.

The maddest thing about Mad Lads is how Count Dank and crew deliver better content than the multi billion dollar media companies lol!
Yeah they feel very scripted and mundane
The difference is passion. All the money in the world doesn't mean the people making the content care.
When you come to America for a comedy show I will try to be there.
Arizona would be preferable cuz that's the state I live in.
You're not so much of a Chad that I'm gonna travel more than 100 miles for
Why do you think they want to purge people like Dank from the Internet? Because one man with one camera is more entertaining then their room chock full of 'writers'.
"they" in this case being some vague "writers who want to stop him". Not everything is a conspiracy bro@@YuriBez2023
Mad Lads is better than any documentary the BBC makes.
Who?
Except for Adam Curtis documentaries and Neil Oliver's shows before he left.

Not to mention more honest, less biased and less full of the occassional lie or propaganda the BBC stands for these days
shoutout to Dankula always wearing different shirts during sponsor segments so I know EXACTLY where to skip
Dude just makes history come alive in his videos, gotta thank algorithm for revealing him to me a while back. 👍
Dankula is an internet legend, welcome to the family.
An old friend showed me dankula while we were on my front porch. It was the gg allin video
I remember when he just made edgy little jokes. It's honestly great seeing people get into him for the modern stuff
My boyfriend showed him to me, I'm proud to be "one of the 5 women in the audience" whenever he uploads 😂

Just bring back the funny, dank.
@@releasethekraken5039 while i somewhat agree, most of us are extremely fond of his mad lads video. the people are not mildly interesting, they're *very* interesting and its not even just reading wikipedia articles, dankula puts his own comedic spin into every video.

Back in those days we used to mail software all the time because it was cheaper AND faster than the bandwidth. Even if you were just sharing something with your close friend, a lot of the time it was just easier to give it to them in person. Sometimes you could find little clubs where people would send stuff back and forth and you could get some nice software that way. Yup. Bandwidth costs and speed were laughably slow and sometimes it was hard to find coal to put into the back of the computer.
My dad's work only recently stopped shipping CDs of new releases to their customers.
I loved how the editor just used the hide the pain harold pic at 39:33 well done sir.
Glad to see i´m not the only one who noticed🙂
I read Cliff's book "The Cuckoo's Egg" for the first time years ago. It's one of the main reasons I got into software engineering and computers in general. Amazing book, very much worth a read if you want the details on the story from Cliff's point of view. Cliff occasionally makes appearances on Numberphile's channel, he makes Klein Bottles with the passion and manic behavior of Doc Brown

Time for another history lesson. 😊
Your Honor, thanks for making this video. I was floored when I saw the name Karl Koch in a title on CZcams.
I was a hacker contemporary of those folks and got to make the acquaintance of some of the other players to whom you alluded. You did a credible job of covering one of the weirdest chapters in black/grey hat hacker history.
Some of us in America had friends in various hacking circles in Europe, and to say that the European hackers were usually WAY more political in various ways than we were would be an understatement.
It was a weird time. Every country with the best networks has incidents of young people getting busted for various misdeeds only to mysteriously be set free, or in the case of one country I remember in the Middle East, getting arrested and then mysteriously being on Internet Relay Chat for what seemed like 24 hours a day even though they were supposed to be in their compulsory military service. Just sayin'. Don't be too hard on the glowies - every country had them, and sometimes they were quite young. Don't even get me started about the French kids.
You're right though, even in the midst of a certain moral flexibility relating to their main pastime, one of the things I observed was a certain streak of mild patriotism almost regardless of where these folks were. Sure, we might aspire fnord to a more anarchic future, but back then none of us wanted to live under the Warsaw Pact who weren't already.
Cliff Stoll was a delightful man back then, but the poor guy was besieged for years by people who wanted to talk to him about hacking when all he wanted to do was talk about adaptive optics.
The good news is that I'd like to think that most of we feral Gen X hacker kids turned out OK. The 90s were a silly time of major corporations gruffly proclaiming "they'd never hire hackers" when their ranks were full of people who also lived under pseudonyms on bulletin board systems while staying up all night. We had lists. :)
Thanks for teaching real history, brother. If you ever get to Las Vegas in August, come to DEF CON. I doubt you'd ever have to pay for a beer.
Cheers!

They actually made a full-blown Cinema movie about Karl & his gang in Germany.

Well made & a fun watch. Wikipedia claims there's also an English Version.

This is the best series on CZcams by far. I've watched every single one of your Absolute Mad Lads multiple times, they're seriously that well done and entertaining.
Ah yes, the Star Wars program, that we Americans "totally didn't build" and "definitely don't have".
Iron Dome?
What's that?
I have always loved the German Film "23" and found the story extremely fascinating!
It was one of the small amount of films from our country that are really brillant. Usually German films besides of topic concerning our history are lame crap, Hollywood and British films and series of all kind are way better. Only thing we are capable of, is a very good overdubbing/sychronisation from foreign films - mostly English language - in our beautiful own language.
@@user-mf4rm4fj6l Now, now, There are plenty of good German movies.
However, the list DOES get slim, if we're talking once that are
actually fun to watch / don't want you to cut your wrists 😄
Rest in Peace Karl Koch.. it wasn't a suicide, there is also a german movie based on him
I already believe it was suicide. Because who would have wanted to kill him? His accomplices just weren't the types for that. And I also think it's unlikely that he was eliminated by the secret services, because the data provided was simply too irrelevant for that.
Karl was depressed, psychotic, addicted to drugs and desperate. And he often announced his suicide among his friends. Incidentally, in exactly the same way, self-immolation.
1. Parents divorced

I didn’t know anyone with a computer until 06. My grandparents briefly had one in the late 90s but that was it. My parents didn’t even get internet until 2010.

Perfect timing. I just got home and the kettle is on.
_The Illuminatus! Trilogy_ is the greatest book I've ever read. It's an insane mix of satire, history, psychoanalysis, religion, and technology. The short of it is that it takes place in a alternative reality wherein every single conspiracy theory ever is true and everyone is on drugs all the time. I've read it five times already and every time I notice new nuggets of insight or comedy between the line.
If I were ever to spend the rest of my life on a desert island and I could only take one book, this would be it.
Who would have thought that Hide the Pain Harold would have a critical part in this story.
Someday I hope to do enough tomfoolery to earn myself a mad lad video

Really enjoyed this story about Carol and his computerrrrrs.
Just started the video. Now waiting for Dank to make a joke about Karl’s name.
Never happens because he's a Scot and is aware of the concept of the 'ch', instead of going, "Well, we could just pretend it's a ck instead, right?"
Youre one kf the few youtubers i still find interesting and fun to watch man. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Well, I was gonna fall asleep, but watching Dankula works
Fun Fact: Computers were extremely affordable in the 1980s, and not "luxury items". In many cases, computers were cheaper in inflation-adjusted terms than a PC is today.
The difference is: they weren't as Popular. Thus the "nerd" stigma until PCs became popular due to 1. VGA Graphics (porn), 2. (3D) games like DOOM, and 3. The Internet.
Back when inflation (too much money in circulation) wasn't a giant problem like today.
Ah the internet. Could you imagine how all the teen boys felt when the internet came in for the first time?
Can confirm. Despite living in poverty, my family was able to afford a PC in those times in germany.
Actually no, 5 seconds of googling gave me an average price of a home computer in 1982 being $530 usd at the lowest possible configuration and manufacturer name. Which adjusted for inflation is well over $1,000 usd. That is not affordable or the average price of computers at the moment. A gaming rig or mac is not what everyone buys and uses. They also are very expensive to the average person.
Right, that's why a high end laptop went for around $9,000 in today's money, adjusted for inflation, and I could get a high end gaming laptop for only $3,000 today. Costs have come down as power has exploded. If the pricing went backwards, by scale this laptop would cost me $1,200 back then. It really shows how far prices have come down compared to computing power.
Good to see you again. The algorithm is recommending you again, as it should.
First day seeing count Dankula and mad lads is amazing content and indeed dank
A person who I believe is well worth getting a video is the Scottish-American revolutionary war hero: John Paul Jones, the father of the US Navy.
Shhhhhh mind the forefathers are Scottish and English. First cowboys Scottish who started moonshine ahh yes Scottish. They like ripping the urine out of France yet we’ll I’ll leave it there 🤣plus he also fought for Russia in the Navy so there’s that aswell he can talk about
RAW's Illuminatus Trilogy is fucking amazing.
There is a DJ called Carl Cox…I was confused at first glance of the title
I love Carl Cox and didn’t even consider that possibility until I saw your comment lol. Not sure how you confused the two unless you clicked on this video without looking at the title and heard him say the Mad Lads name.
I love the Illuminatus! Trilogy, got tons of laughs out of me.
You nailed that Computer-Stammtisch pretty well
What I honestly love its Counts dead eyes when reading from the sponsor text. LOL. You go, mate, you get that dough!

fun fact Clifford Stoll currently sells giant Klein bottles and contributes to the educational yt channel: Numberphile
Growing up I used to hack road signs with the light up displays. They were unlocked and the password was 0000
Went to work for Circle K. Many of their stores didn’t change the gas controls password from “admin”
Also, 4 digit combination locks can be cracked in 30 minutes or less if there is no penalty for incorrect guesses. This surprised the police when I walked into the back door of their station. They didn’t believe I could do it.

The announcements at the end make me really wish I were able to attend one of these shows, one was a chance to drink with this legend, this one makes me imagine a drunk post-show Marcus saying "oi, yoo, fite me"
and here I was thinking that Dank couldn't pronounce the name "Karl/Carl" as he claimed he couldn't!

I've actually read this story from the other perspective! There's a book called something like The Cuckoo's Egg that chronicles the Berkeley guy's the discovery of f the intrusion and efforts to track the hackers. Fun read.
@38:47 I wouldn't know if that's a blueprint for a Stealth Tank? Au cointreau, mon ami. I certainly WOULD know.

Thanks so much for this video. Back in the 90's I was a big fan of a live radio show, West Coast Weekend, hosted by Sedge Thompson. I happened to be in the audience the time Clifford was interviewed. One little thing you missed, Clifford is also a physicist. It was one of the most interesting interviews I've ever listened to. I have his book. The Cuckoo's Egg on my to be read shelf. BTW, Clifford is a very gentle childlike person. I don't think he would ever want anyone to be murdered.
This was a good one! WHen you said "back-traced" I imagined that dad who said "I BACKTRACED IT!"
If the War Thunder forums had existed back in the 80's, someone would have leaked the actual Star Wars program just to win an argument.
