The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in The Royal Ballet’s repertory. It was the ballet with which the Company reopened the Royal Opera House in 1946 after World War II, its first production at its new home in Covent Garden. Margot Fonteyn danced the role of the beautiful Princess Aurora in the first performance, with Robert Helpmann as Prince Florimund. Sixty years later, in 2006, the original 1946 staging was revived by then Director of The Royal Ballet Monica Mason and Christopher Newton, returning Oliver Messel’s wonderful designs and glittering costumes to the stage.
The masterful 19th-century choreography of Marius Petipa is combined with sections created for The Royal Ballet by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. Together they create an enchanting sequence of gems in the ballet repertory - from the iconic Rose Adage, when Aurora meets her four royal suitors, and the lilting Garland Waltz to the Vision Pas de deux, as Florimund sees Aurora for the first time, and the celebratory divertissements and final pas de deux that bring the ballet to its glorious close. Throughout, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s masterful score takes ballet music to a height of passion, sophistication and intensity that arguably has never been surpassed. - Zábava

I'm very happy that we've gotten to see so much of Fumi lately, she's a marvelous dancer and really deserves to be promoted to Principal.
agreed! Fumi and Federico worked very well together in this pas de deux, she is a stunning dancer and I'm hoping she will be promoted to principal soon. (If she becomes a principal this also means they may work more together in the future).

also, shout out to the corps- I always rewatch at least twice to focus on them, and they are all lovely in this! kudos, we know ballet would be nothing without the corps!
Love this! Gina the fairy makes me want to laugh. Like "Haha, nope." every time the prince comes up.
Of all the male principals at the RB, Federico is the one who, for me at least, conveys the emotion of the roles best. His Des Grieux in Manon, or Albrecht in Giselle etc etc always tear at my heart.
S Wain Matthew Ball is excellent at emoting as well.
@@erod97 Hi Erika, I have seen Matthew in "soloist" roles and rehearsing the role of Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. He was very good as the Bluebird in the recent Sleeping Beauty. I guess I need to see his portrayal of other lead characters in more of the productions.

I just love Fumi in this role
I saw the recorded version in Switzerland, and it brought me to tears. It took a little time for Fumi to fully settle into the role, but once she did, she really shined. She performed with such grace and care, married her movements with the music, and truly inhabited the role. These days there are a lot of dancers who have high extensions but fail to express their roles. It is refreshing to see dancers like Fumi.

Whenever I see the Sleeping Beauty Act 2 pas, I think it's the most beautiful of all pas de deux.
Fumi's defining identity is an ethereal feminine sweetness (a good thing), very 19th C.
This whole scene is just the purest ballet heaven.

This was a wonderful performance of the "Sleeping Beauty".
I saw it in the cinema in Bern, Switzerland, and I enjoyed it so much.
Federico Bonelli is a great dancer, with a superb technique, very expresive and emotional, he partnered Fumi Kaneko so attentive, secure and lovely.
It was really a great pleasure to look at him (we really don't get to see enough if him) and the marvellous Ballerina Fumi Kaneko; she has a stunning technique, beautiful pirouettes, is dancing with great lightness. Nevertheless it is so hard and difficult, to dance these parts and roles so perfect.
Also I adored the ballerina in the part of the "Fliederfee" (fairy lilac). She has so beautiful lines and dances with a wonderful calmness.

Please upload Fumi's Rose Adagio. It was the first time the Rose Adagio has moved me to tears. She was spectacular at every moment, but that was something else.

Something about Fumi reminds me of the gorgeous Svetlana Beriosova, who was with the Royal Ballet. Fumi is an exquisite dancer.

Fumi is absolutely breathtaking ! Federico is still so handsome , as much as I adore Federico it would have been even more special if Fumi had got to do the live broadcast with her real life partner and 100% hunk Reece Clarke - Gina storm's Lilac is incredible - normally Lilac fairies are all serene and calm , I love her totally original Mischievous shtick it's awesome - I saw this production live in December with Yasmine and Matty - the Royal Ballet really have the best Beauty IMO

Thank you for such a lovely video, she's a very unique and extraordinary ballerina, really wonderful. I had the good fortune to buy tickets for November 13, 14 and 15, 2019, to see Steven McLae and akane Takada, I was also very happy to discover Yasmine Francesca Mathew and Alexander, so I flew to London, once there, I saw the 13, Francesca and Alexander, the 14 yasmine and Matthew and the 15 I already knew that Steven would not dance due to an injury, but I thought I'd see Akane, in the end the cast was Fumi Kaneko and Reece Clarke. So I discover these two dancers for the first time. Well, both were incredible, it was a great success ¡¡¡ a wonderful evening ¡¡¡ Fumi, I do not know if it was her debut or not that night the 15th nov, but she certainly danced as she had danced Aurora all her life, she was superb¡¡¡ it was a great success and I still rmemeber the great impression gave me his partner Reece Clarke. Now this video makes me remember that wonderful night, thanks a lot¡¡¡¡ :-)

Fumi is so light and graceful, a beautiful Aurora, but Kudos to Gina Storm-Jensen as the Lilac Fairy, a difficult role, brilliantly executed. Was Fumi standing in for Lauren in the performance you recently broadcast? If so, I'm assuming Gina was stand-in for the Lilac Fairy. Brilliant. Hoping t see her as a Soloist, if not First Soloist soon. And while I'm there hopefully Fumi will be a Principal soon.
I know Fumi is probably not the best technical dancer but god I love watching her dance. And Gina is also stunning as the lilac fairy!

Why don't the Ballet Crew in The Sleeping Beauty Ballet put Christening Decorations in the Great Hall, Birthday Decorations in the Royal Garden, Hunting Party Decorations in the Forest, Slumber Decorations in the Topmost Tower, and Wedding Decorations in the Ballroom?

An over emphasis on looking pretty with zero dramatic understanding. Her arms are weak too.
David her arms or any ballerinas for that matter, should be light and airy; it’s a good quality. Not understanding the weak portion of your comment, doubt any dancers arms are weak, just graceful as their role portrays them as.
@@erod97 She wobbles any time she has to hold onto anyone. And rather than just light and airy, which I agree with, there is no distinction in any of her arm movements as they all melt into one. This sort of thing used to drive Frederick Ashton crazy.
