Lex Luthor meets the new Lex Luthor this week as we sit down with Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, About a Boy) for a conversation about his prep for the role, super hero pressure in the age of social media, and the art of shaving your head.
Nicholas shared his hesitancy of progressing as a child actor (up until About a Boy) and how a moment of losing anonymity almost lead to him quitting.
We also talk about geeking out when Anthony Hopkins hissed, his appreciation for Clint Eastwood’s dark humor, and whether or not Nicholas Cage went to bat for him during their second film together.

NICHOLAS HOULT: Prepping for Lex Luthor, Contemplating Quitting & Career Gratitude #insideofyou #nicholashoult #lexluthor - Zábava
Michael realizing he was Hoult's first Lex Luthor was pretty damn heartwarming.
DC Comics roles and the legacy they hold is always nice to see
Michael was my 3rd live Lex. But still my favorite.
Maybe heartwarming to you but it makes everyone else feel old lol
I never minded Jessie Eisenberg’s
He had Clancy Brown
That was my favourite moment
It’s always nice to see two Lexs hanging out together
You should be worried, Clark
Haha facts can’t wait for Hoult’s Lex loved the podcast as well
Get Jesse Eisenberg on the show too and have all three plan Clark's/Kal's demise.
Hopefully he'll be better than eisenburg
I don't think he played Lex, but The Riddler @kfw9257
@@bennettemmanuel4373 haha it felt that way
Dude so wanted to pick Michael's brain about playing Lex but realized he was the one being interviewed. Michael should feel like a million bucks. That was awesome.
I'm really looking forward to the podcast when the new Superman movie is about to come out and Michael and Nicholas just talk about playing the role of Lex together
That dawned on me too. Michael looked totally flattered when Nicholas revealed that he was his first Lex Luthor he saw on screen
Michael is apart of history in terms of being lex, did a phenomenal job. I felt he set the standard as modern live action lex not to mention he was voicing Wally West around the same time as Smallville. He's a part of some iconic stuff.
@@jasonhearn5818his voice work as Wally needs to be more known and appreciated.
Michael was the best Lex Luther IMO. Easily the best actor on smallville.
The fact that he knows about All Star Superman makes me happy.
It’s a good story to know.
When did he say that in the interview?
Why does it make you happy?
@@jesseowenvillamor6348 All Star Supes is considered a bit of a watershed moment. One of the very best stories for the character and Comics in general.
@@DireAxis I know, but why does it make @malilkcrim13 happy if Hoult knows that comics?
Rosenbaum doing the Lord’s work for DC fans. Thank you sir 😌
Maxwell Lord ?
Most anticipated movie in the world right now and Rosey gets the new Lex before anyone.
@@serwinzzalot9989 good. He was the only live action lex I really liked
@@nrnehigie7382 🤝
@@MajorClownShoeWithout the bleeding nose. Absolutely
Anyone from the u.k born in the 90s will always remember Nicholas as Tony from skins.
Yes.
First generation Skins has one of the most insane young casts looking back: Nicholas Hoult, Dev Patel and Daniel Kaluuya! Also Joe Dempsie, Hannah Murray (GoT), Aimee-Ffion Edwards and Kaya Scodelario. What a talent pool.
It's also such a shock to remember Peter Capaldi was in it.
I have no idea how, but I remember watching Skins in the 90s until they changed the cast, and I lost interest. West Virginia is far from the u.k. 😅
First generation was the best. Second was good but not as interesting as the first. The rest went downhill after that@@roadrollerdio565
@@LoremonXSkins came out in 2007 so a bit later than the 90s if it was the 90s UK the fashion sense would have burnt out your retinas 😂
Yo a podcast episode with David Corenswet and Tom Welling chatting about their experiences being Superman once the movie comes out would be legit as hell
Tom would say that "he's not Superman"
@@alejandroangel998He probably wouldn’t actually. I think he’s mature enough to not disrespect his fellow actors like that.
@@chrisb5243Tom would say he isn’t Superman. He signed on to Smallville to play Clark Kent, he had no interest in actually playing Superman because he found the human side to be more interesting
@@creativename6126 Oh I misunderstood I thought he was saying that’s what he would say about David lol.
@chrisb5243 lmfao Tom Welling coming onto the pod like
"Yo, you ain't no superman, Corn Sweat, you punk ass. *I'm* Superman"
Nicholas is such a warm, genuine young man and this episode was a treat to listen to and I wish him every success with his forthcoming role as Lex Luthor🙂
facts amazing actor cant wait for Legacy gonna be something special
I was so excited to see this episode after Rosenbaum mentioned he did an episode with him, it also feels so surreal seeing a big actor on this podcast
Seen him grow up in the public eye ever since About a Boy and he genuinely seems like a nice chap.
The note Michael gave Nicholas about being charismatic with an undertone of rage was fundamental but perfect! Backed up with the description of an emotional event to draw from and the freedom to explore the character, I could see the moment the penny dropped. A great passing of the torch moment!
Timestamp?
Nicholas is a great actor with great range.
Not that great of a range, bt he's pretty charismatic.
I think there's no one more qualified than Mickael to give advice to Hoult about Lex ! So glad to know that !
Gene Hackman?
Now we need Tom Welling and David Corenswet in one room lol. or henry cavill as well.
Anything is possible
Or Tyler
Throw Routh in there too
Would break the Internet 😂😂😂
@@mitchellregan21Kirk All….. George Reev….. I mean, Chritoph….. SHIT
Nicholas is a phenomenal actor, he went criminally underused as Beast in the X-Men movies, so it’ll be awesome to see him tackling a role like Lex that REFUSES to be ignored.
Handled the sensitive topic of Nicholas not wanting to go into something that was very personal to him. Very well done handling that uncomfortable moment making Nicholas feel at ease while interviewing him.
I was already a fan of his work, now I'm a fan of him as a person. What a chill, humble guy.
Loving this episode. I like how the best Lex ever is giving advice to the new Lex. Nicholas is going to do a great job. I remember watching him in About a Boy. He is such a talented actor. Also loved his X man role. Best podcast ever!
He wasn't X-Man.
@@chand911but he was in X-Men & that’s what the person was meaning to say
@@chand911 I can't tell if you're being a pedantic jerk or just showing your ignorance, but Hoult played the young Hank McCoy/Beast in X-Men films.
Loved Nicholas in Warm Bodies and my goodness he is too delightful in The Great. I honestly didn't watch all of Smallville, but I watched the first two seasons and his Lex Luthor and the dynamic with his father is what comes to my mind. Much more than Tom as Superman(no hate to Tom).
Michael, in my opinion, you have been the best Lex to date... and it's not even close.
I'm a big Hackman fan, but you gave Lex layers that no one has before or since.
Nicholas, break a leg, brother. I am looking forward to your take. I hope you pass the high bar Michael set.
Yes
I second and third this.
The first ten mins hit me in the feels. Lex's first Lex!!! Could tell it meant a lot to both gentleman. For the British contingent, referencing Smallville on Channel 4, during T4, was a nostalgia blast. It was an institution for the young and the hungover.
22:00 Wow Nicholas Hoult knows his subject (or maybe it's James Gunn who told him about it lol) but anyways All Star Superman is one of the best comics of Superman, it's cool to see an actor who seems to have done his research ! I can't wait to see his version of Lex.
Very cool, the fact that Smallville was Nicholas' first Lex and that it meant so much to Rosey was really heartwarming to see. Gonna fancast for a moment, it would be really cool to have Rosey play Lionel Luthor in the Gunn movies, just sayin'... plus he could keep his hair!
I can see Gunn giving him a cameo. He gave him a small role in Guardians, so I have 0 doubt he’ll give him a cameo in the new DCU somewhere. Having him play Lionel would be too on the nose though.
The multiverse is here.
I mentioned this before, but this is honestly one of my favorite Podcasts and youtube channels. It almost feels like a crime that you don't have over a million subscribers. The guests are amazing. The interactions and discussions are genuine, interesting, heartfelt and many times, funny. Thank you Michael for making us smile and laugh week after week and giving us a chance to look Inside of You, and in turn, Inside of Us.
Completely agree, really get to know these celebrities at a personal level with his long duration interviews. Just shows how fake their 5 minute ones are on the talk shows like Kimmel and Fallon
@@ARBLACKxThat’s because in those interviews they’re promoting their work and doing stories/anecdotes. While here they can open up about their personal histories and experiences. So far a few of my favorite recent guests are Michael Biehn, James Gunn, Mark Sheppard, Katee Sackhoff and Kumail Nanjiani.
Nicholas Hoult role as Peter III in The Great was amazing. That was a genuinely great show.
I love Nicholas Hoult he's incredible from Warm Bodies to X Men to The Menu to Renfield whatever role he's in he knocks it out of the park he's a Legend I'm beyond excited to see how he plays Lex
Someone once said on a podcast that Nicolas Holt is like a modern day Rex Harrison and I couldn't agree more. What a great conversation.
The 2 Lex Luthors meet!!!! I have enjoyed Nick's work since X-Men First Class Trilogy and Renfield!!!
Nick is a good dude, he comes from my home town & went to the gym my girlfriend worked at, after a late shift my girlfriend was waiting outside in the dark & Nick waited with her until her mum showed up, nothing weird about it - he just was being kind.
Some people wear that on their face and i always assumed it of him. Very nice seeming n in a way will be great for Lex cuz you’ll like him and be charmed
That was really nice he waited with her so she was safe.
Love how Micheal humanizes and brings out a real positive energy from every guest. Really enjoyed this one. Can’t wait to see the follow up and his performance!
Hoult on The Great is no exaggeration an all time performance it captures the entire scope of human emotion. Writing and acting in perfect harmony
The great is so underrated it's crazy.
So true I can’t believe how underrated he is
Nicolas is so warm and pleasant! Very down to earth and humble. What a wonderful interview, Michael.
As a millennial from the South West of the UK, Skins was my absolute favourite thing. I've loved watching Nick, Joe and Dev go on to such incredible carers the past couple of decades.
The best way I can describe this whole segment is it's basically big brother and little brother uniting together and the big brother handing down the torch to his little brother in full confidence that he knows he's going to do a good job and at the same time he's also humbled and honored that his younger brother looked up to his older brother for inspiration
Nicholas Holt asks you a question "What did you take away from the playing the character?"
I think it would be interesting to bring Nicholas back after he has played the role, to have a conversation on the contrasts between what he took away from the role being in a condensed film format compared to you with the episodic exploration of the character.
I absolutely loved Hoult in The Menu. Stoked to see him as Lex.
michael's take on lex was extremely nuanced, which is why his portrayal remains the best live action take
clancy brown's take on lex is the best animated
i think that nick should reach back to the character he portrayed in skins for use as lex
I served Mr Hoult when I used to work for Waitrose and got his autograph. Very nice and down to earth.
What a Mensch Rosenbaum is. The grace and kindness he showed to Nicholas is unparalleled. Love how the og Lex is passing the torch to the new one. Truly epic ❤️❤️🙏.
Lex Luthors in the house lol. This is the biggest unexpected surprise and Michael Rosenbaum has out done himself really well.
Never saw his career coming this far watching Warm bodies. That was a film i watched on a whim and ended up really liking. Glad to see how far his come.
4:05 this is so genuine. Truly a noble and heartwarming moment.
Nicholas seems like a genuine, cool and chill guy. Loved this episode!
That was actually a really fantastic low key impression of Anthony Hopkins to be fair. He got his very light Welsh accent and his intonations just right and even stared off into the distance, like Sir Anthony does when he's being himself. That was dead on.
Nicholas Hoult’s voice is so charming to listen to, it just hits a spot in my ears that I’ve never felt before
Fury Road was the first thing I'd seen Nicholas in, and I've loved everything I've seen him in since. And I've gotta say, I never imagined him as Lex Luthor but I have no doubt he'll knock it out of the park.
that “so i shouldn’t do that?” just cemented him for me as lex. The quick, poignant riposte. 🔥
Awesome to see Michael's reaction to how he was Nicholas' first Lex. The good advice Michael gives, under James Gunn's direction, we're definitely getting peak Lex Luthor in the DCU! Nicholas will be amazing. Wonderful to see the role whether it's in film or TV impacts someone's life. Now Nicholas will be Lex for kids today and kids being born. I can't wait for Superman!
Love that Nicholas got to prepare for the role chatting with the greatest Lex ever.
It was funny how out of the blue Hoult was interviewing Rosenbaum.
I first saw him in Warm Bodies, and I've loved everything else he's done. What a great guest! Awesome episode!
Lex on Lex. Love to see it
You mean also white Wally West meets young Hank McCoy/Beast!!
This has to be a highlight of the podcast. Seeing Michael give advice and pass on his techniques to the next person to play his most iconic role of Lex Luthor is special.
The passing of the torch... or in this case the razer for the hair lol
Yes, Michael's the best Lex. Good luck, Nicholas!
You already know nick was listening to big daddy Rosenbaum give him the deep “lex” talk over a bottle of whiskey after the podcast. I have no doubt holt is going to kill it
I saw Gunn shared this and flew straight over to youtube. What a lovely interview and you always give so much, Michael. Im sure Nicholas felt some extra peer confidence after this. He is so nice and super talented. Creatives all need that support. 🥰
It was nice of him to give you recognition for ur work in Smallville, coz let's be honest one of the best portraits of Lex Luthor you did!
I finished watching Warm Bodies with my gf last weekend, and I've seen Nicholas in other films such as The Menu, X-Men First Class, and X-Men Days of Futures Past. He's an absolutely tremendous actor and I can't wait to see his portrayal of Lex.
It’s awesome to hear Nicholas is a racing fan and is learning the craft! Driving at COTA is insanely cool. Thanks for bringing him on Michael!
I think with this version of Lex Luthor maybe James Gunn will take a page out of Smallville's Lex Luthor where he will make him charismatic, giving him the complexities of living up to the name as we saw with Lionel grooming his son, putting that pressure where we could see those moments with Hoults Luthor.
“This is James Gunn's podcast mate!!! THE ENTIRE Superman cast you’ll see here FIRST!” Put it in the description. It´s your time baby!
Yep right before the new Superman movie comes out next year James Gunn and the whole cast will definitely be on the podcast promoting it. Looking forward to all the interviews esp David Corenswet!
Nicholas >James Bond
I think he's such a great actor he could pull any role off.
I started watching the great by accident, and what an outrageous script, extremely funny performances, and a show that can be heart wrenching and uplifting.
Can't say enough about The Great.
Michael your still number 1 Lex, however Nicholas will definitely give you a run for you money.
1:07:55 ahah well done Michael for inviting yourself to the premiere 😂 Personally I will go at the premiere to Paris to the Grand Rex (because I'm French) but I hope that Michael you will really be there (we will see that the day of its release...), anyways, you really deserve to be invited because you are and will always be the best Lex Luthor (try to bring Tom Welling with you? It would be funny and nice to see you both at the premiere)
I hope we get Welling and Corenswet. Loved Houkt as Beast, but my favroite movie of his is probably The Menu.
Do a Council of Luthors podcast, get you, Hoult, Clancy Brown, Jon Cryer, Titas Welliver and Michael Cudlitz together
It's too bad Hackman is out of the business and out of the spotlight. Would have been cool if he could have had him on. He mentioned the poster being signed by him saying, "To the second best Lex - Gene Hackman."
This episode was so lovely, probably one of my favorite episodes to date. 🥺 I’m hoping that Nicholas Hoult and James Gunn both agreeing that Michael’s Lex was the best is a good sign for how Lex is going to be presented in the movie. None of the other live action Lexes have really resonated with me, but Nicholas is an exceptional actor and has the right look for him, so I’m very optimistic about the movie!
Wow-wow-wee-waa! I was not expecting to see Nicholas Hoult on here. I loved him in The Great!!!
I have pretty much grown up watching Nicholas Hoult as we're both around the same age group, he's 4 years younger than me and it has been a real blast to watch him mature into an amazing actor in his own right. I've been a fan of his since his Skins day, he is going to absolutely kill it as Lex Luthor and i can't wait to see him in action.
Nicholas is gonna kill it as Lex
Much respect to Nicholas coming to learn from the Master.
😊
An awesome chat. Nicholas is a fantastic actor. The range he has covered is amazing. And the new Lex. Definitely will be a wild & fun ride with this new Superman film
Cannot wait to see him return, after the film. A Lex & Lex dialogue
Rosenbaum is the all time best Lex Luther of all time!
Nic Hoult is one of my fav actors of recent years.
The most natural, genuine conversation. I want to see these guys in a movie or show together.
Lex talking to Lex about Lex. Love it! Please interview David Corenswet next. He has a new movie coming out next month so now’s the perfect time. I really want to know more about the new Man of Steel.
What is his latest movie called?
@@prathapkutty7407 The Greatest Hits. It comes to Hulu in April.

Rosenbaum is my favorite Lex Luthor. I like the quiet intensity he brought to the character.
I just love the podcast. It's very interesting, thank you so much 😊
Watching right now ❤ Loving this!! Thank you Michael ❤
This was great, the Lex chat between them really pulled me in, great character, two great guys! And Nic referencing smallville on channel 4 really took me back to my late teens
Thanks for BRAZILIAN subtitles, MUITO OBRIGADO pelas legendas em Brasileiro!
Yeah, muito obrigado Lex
After the next film is done I'd love to see a Lex round table with all the other Lex's you've had on the show / the ones you can get together!
Great episode. Thanks for the thoughtful questions
Mr. Hoult's english speech is outstanding!
This was a great chat! Looking forward to seeing Nicholas's Lex and the follow up once its out
nick fanboying is great and i think it's something good ole lex(michael) needs to hear more often ♥ he was not the first lex i saw but he was the best lex by far
Nicholas you have become my favorite person to see on screen recently, Keep it coming🎉❤
Feel like I watched this guy my entire life. Remember seeing about a boy when I was a kid and skins when I was a teenager etc.
Excited for this one!
It always kind of makes me smile a little bit whenever two like well-known or semi-well known actors meet and it turns out they're actually fans of eachother. It just creates such an interesting, human atmosphere I think. Also Rosenbaum is really good as an interviewer (when he doesn't talk over his guests). But he really kind of seems to create a really good vibe that makes these people actually like being there, just talking like a regular human person.
Awesome!!!!!! Thank you 🙏
What a lovely interview with a lovely guy. Great one Rosey! I love how much reverence Nicholas has for those who played the role before him. I'm so glad there are actors who will watch previous iterations of a popular character they will be playing. It gives me hope for a faithful adaptation.
This was an amazing podcast! 💚💚Hope everyone is doing well with their mental health on this fine day!
I’m actually very excited for Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. It’s so heartwarming that Hoult said his favourite Lex is Micheal’s Lex
Nicholas is a fantastic actor, he has so much potential . He's gonna have a great future as lex and other movies . I'm excited
Micheal in 2001 I was 2 😂 my Mother was a huge fan and actually introduced me to the show ❤ god bless her soul and god bless you guys 🎉
Whoa!!! This is awesome! And almost to 300k subs too!
Awesome episode When Lex hangs out with Lex💙 My favorite part of Tuesday 🤘
Meeting of the Luthors! I was wondering it be cool if you had him on. Which means you've got to get Corenswet and Brosnahan on. Also I love Michael being that supportive older brother here giving him solid advice and how much Nicholas himself wants to hear Michael’s opinion and wisdom
Loved this
GREAT EPISODE!!!
I've met him...could not be nicer. He and Jennifer Lawrence. Huge proponents of " know your lines " backwards and forwards respect. Takes work
