      Well Robins are highly territorial birds and will defend their area from wrens and other small birds.
      Although this is an American Robin? This Robin doesn't look anything like Robins in England, this bird looks more like a blackbird with a deep red breast.

    • @benderisgreat95able
      @benderisgreat95able Před rokem +3

      @alexwilson365 , European Robin is famously dickish, but they are not closely related to American Robins. They share the name because of their chest plumage and that's about it aside from being passerines.
      American Robins aren't as social as flock feeders and don't have a reputation for nest raiding, which removes most of their selective pressure for aggression. Their only flock behavior as a species is sleeping in the same tree at night, but live as a typical pairing foraging lovebird otherwise.

    The fox caught not only the 4 chicks, but also the big bird. He totally wiped out the whole family. If the piles were only half a meter higher, they could have escaped, the recording clearly shows that the fox just reached them. He couldn't have jumped the extra half a meter. It's been about that long. For the fox family, this barely covered their daily feast, especially if several foxes were waiting. It was no accident that the fox sniffed back, because even with the capture of the big bird, it must have been a scarce meal for 2 big foxes and 4-5 developing fox cubs.

    Unfortunately this is exactly why you should not use cameras that have night vision or turn off the infrared light when filming a bird nest. Nocturnal animals such as raccoons and foxes can sense the infrared light and are drawn to it. People do not realize it but they are putting the nest in serious danger by having an infrared light (in this case two) pinpointing exactly where it is for predators. It's basically a spotlight for predators saying come and feast. Us humans can not see infrared (only the dim red of the actual bulb) but our eyes are much less sensitive compared to these night time animals. Some birds can even sense the infrared light as well. I have experimented and some species will be aware of it or not even return to the nest if it is on.

    Interesting. Often enough, adults of many species of birds (and even mammals) leave young alone in order to draw predators away, lessen the scent or attractiveness of where young are, etc. White-tailed Deer leave fawns obscured in something like tall grass alone all day. Piping Plovers draw mammalian predators away from young on the beach with elaborate distraction displays, sometimes feigning injury so the predator will go after them and not search for young, knowing they can easily fly away to avoid the threat. This American Robin chose to vacate the area presumably hoping the fox would as well. However, perhaps an attack strategy would have been better, especially if it could have stayed in the area to see the fox was undeterred. Northern Mockingbirds used to dive bomb me all the time when I was kid and they had a nest in my yard. Going back to the beach, many terns can do damage in the same way. The fox would have at least been annoyed and pestered enough to potentially second guess what became an easy meal.

      I don't think any song bird would have tried such a bold attack against an animal that's searching for food for its own young.

    Alot of people are saying "this is just the circle of life"... Imagine a mother bird working hard and finally laying eggs. She worked hard for them. Only 9 days later, she returns to her nest to see that they are gone. I know this is how the circle of life works, but she worked so hard for those babies. I know it will help the fox, but its real sad to see 4 healthy baby birds get eaten by the fox and the mother just searching for her babies in devastation. Im not saying that the fox shouldnt have ate the babies, i get that it can help feed a fox family or smth, but that mother worked so hard to lay those beautiful eggs, only to see that her babies have died a few days later. Someone could have done something to save the babies, but not kill the fox, rather feed it something else. It isnt their fault though, because maybe they were sleeping at the time.
