- I'm very excited to have the new Axial SCX10III Jeep Gladiator here in the workshop! I take a first look, describe the differences between the RTR models, and the Kit, and start my first round of upgrades to make it the Ultimate Gladiator! In Stage 1, I tackle some mechanical upgrades, and add some weight down low to help compensate for the portal axles!
What upgrades would you do?

First time RC owner. Had my JT RTR for a few months now. Have not been a CZcams user so it sat around after that WTF moment when I realized this was not the plug & play I hoped it would be. These videos are a great help. Just took it into the backyard and put it and myself through the paces. Thanks for the ideas and suggestions.
Glad to hear that the videos were helpful! Make sure to reach out or join the forum should you have any further questions!
Looks great! Amazing how just a few changes can make such a difference.
This JT is going places. Can't wait to see how it comes together.
I’m so excited to watch this series!! The Gladiator looks like a fantastic rig. 👍✌️
Great video as always, I can’t wait to see what you do next. I have the SCX10 III kit with the dig setup. It looks like I need to save my money for the Gladiator now. Thanks, Matt!
Your videos are what have inspired me that scale rock crawlers need to be my next hobby. Paint up a small version of my 97 Jeep TJ!
Looking great Matt looking forward to the next update 👍👍
Looks killer! I can't wait to see the next stage.
Everything you do is awesome I'm sure this will be too. Great start looks awesome!
Yessir looking forward to seeing more of this build 👍 this would have made a cool budget build off
I love how big it is.
Can't wait to see what you do with it.
I still would love to see the gladiator as the next scx24....perhaps a scx24.2?!
You got ur wish lol
@@maherkahala5269 aww man you beat me to it
This is going to be a great series! Love mine and have already gone for vitavon brass portal covers X4 and ali panhard, Knight Customs fenders, sliders and some other accessories, HW 540 2300kv with FS GT5 and cant get over how enjoyable it is to pilot and how capable it is on the Welsh mountains.
Still awaiting Ottsix Baby Faces to arrive from the US. 50wt oil has made a great improvement to technical trailing/climbing and given more support to the heavy ish body.
Really looking forward to seeing the project develop Matt, after a warm but not hot initial reaction to its release it quickly seems to have become a really well rated truck; and it climbs like an absolute goat!
Look forward to the next episode
I found my baseball cap inside the receiver housing in the accessories baggie. Thought it was missing at first. This video was exactly what I was looking for to upgrade my RTR. Love the wheels and tires you picked.
The Jeep looks awesome.nice selection on parts Matt.💪
Another awesome video! Loving this series. Looking forward to the rest of the videos in this series. Thank you!
More to come!
@@scalebuildersguild YES!
Looks awesome. SSD makes so many great parts
It looks much better already.
I can't wait to see what stage 2 going to be.
Looking forward to this series. As I hope to get this truck in the near future. I would like to see how the Hobbywing fusion 1800kv would fit in this. That will and tire combo is perfect!
I’m excited to see what’s next!
I plan on making mine look kinda close to the one I drive . I will be following this one real close 😀
Just ordered mine after this vid. Will be here Thursday I'm excited. Plan on dropping my hbw axe 1900kv in
Awesome! I'm still in love with short wheelbase jeeps though. Would like a2dr jl, soft top both in RC and 1:1.
I wait a grey one for christmas... I hope that Santa bring me one! Great review and great mods, as usual! Congrats
Love the wheels and fenders.
Haha, nice one! Always on point Sir! Somehow the new colour on the backdrop escaped me before, overall, glad to hand out the 870th like, thank you 👍
I love that “overland cage”.
awesome like always Matt brother order the grey one last week, appreciate this vid, stay safe brother
Looking forward to seeing how cool this one turns out.. One day I hope my squares are as well worn as yours.. Oh, and I called my Mom.
stage one looks great so far!!
Thanks for the review
I put the new Hobbywing 1800kv Fusion system in my JT, love it!
Gladiator and Capra are one of the most underapreciated rc´s out there, )
Can you do a top ten sort of video about most scale looking chassis ?
Yeah looking sweet. I dig it. I wish the body came in black, appreciate you sharing. I'm looking to get one down the road
I would have liked to see Sting Grey, myself!
Now i want one even more. My next door neighbor has a dark orange gladiator. It looks sharp. Although nothing beets olive darb green. I like add ons.
I really enjoy the intro to this episode
DUDE I am FOREVER on the phone with my mom eating a sandwich when I'm driving my RC cars. I'm so glad they solved my problem :D
😂
Now I really want one of these trucks.. ugh... looks great!!!
Michael Heliker I was thinking the same thing. I would love to get one and follow his upgrades
Ron Hinkle I know, right!?? I just can’t afford to do it every time sbg, or Harley designs does this!!
I just subscribed to ur channel today because I just bought my jeep Gladiator and tell u I'm very happy I haven't even run iit yet so I'm more happy to know ur upgrades I can't wait to upgrade mines slow I have the red one its awesome especially tha cowboy the driver
They sure are taking their sweet time with those straight axles.
Looks real nice! I traded my JKU for a JT! Love it!!
Those wheels are impressive👌
It look great and upgrade are super cool
Nice video I look at your video all the time I like the gladiator nice jeep!!!
Glad you enjoy it!
THIS! So excited! Many SSD parts I love to use. For sure getting those fenders, quite the game changer. How wide ssd rotor/hubs you went with? And anymore weight you plan on adding down low? Thanks again!
For a motor, i would highly suggest the 1200kv hobbywing fusion, i know you dont like wheel speed as much as some but its so smooth and just the perfect amount of speed on 3s.
Beautiful!👌🥰👍
I installed Club5Racing's EZOFF hinge and magnet system on my Gladiator. Now the body just tilts up out of the way like it does on the stock 1/24 Gladiator. And no more screwing with those awful body clips! Highly recommend. And if you need the body completely removed for working on the truck, it comes off with a couple easy screws at the rear.
Sounds good, I'll have to check that out!
I love my JT but I swapped to the 2 speed setup. I was immediately disappointed as the difference in gearing is not enough to use it more often. I then dropped the pinion a couple teeth to hopefully make more use of it since I run 3s.
Great video Matt I got the Black version, l got rc4wd mud slingers and RC Lions aluminum beadlocks I ordered the same portal upgrades this is my 3rd scx10iii, the kit has a 2014 Chevy Silverado crewcab on it and the rtr JLU got the personalised clear body, bummer you didn't get the baseball hat, see ya next upgrade 😎👍
Wow it's a nice truck to start and will get the premium sbg upgrades, probs
Can’t wait to see on Operation 11 Charlie’s channel tomorrow night!
Nice!
Yay he reveiwed it
Why nut take a few measurements and run to the lap top, then rhn to the 3-D printer and print out the lights bucket with a lip or tongue/groove - 2 sided tape fixture to the stock fender. Keep strength, have light bucket and a new income stream lol... 🤔 😁 Love SBG!!!
I’m really interested in finding out what stage one means!! Love the your stuff . I
the only thing i like about having more wheel speed with my trail trucks is being able to clean out the tires in mud by spinning them faster than stock speed
that is exactly what people thought when jeep first made that gladiator (i LOVE what Hennesy performance did to it its called the maxximus for a reason)
nice post!
great video brother, i gots ta git me one of them there trucks..lol hey man this may be a dumb question but, i've been in the hobby for many years and still have no idea what those metal collars are that are on some motor leads, any idea??
Could you do a tour of your workbench and the tool you use please. I am returning to the hobby and seeying what you use and your setup would help. Thanks
I’ve done a workshop tour! Also cover a lot of the tools I use in other videos! Check the channel for more!
When you said there is some difference of the RTR from the kit version where you only talking about the JLU vs JT? I was under the impression that the JLU was exactly the same as the kit and no parts were subbed for the RTR.
That lady looks sharp!
I Just want that body! I have a long wheelbase crawler I built using a bpc chassis and element drivetrain
What foams are you running in the tires? Do you normally vent your tires?
I love ssd parts I run them on all my rigs.
Hey dud...!! Keep it up
🤘🏾💯 Intro lol
I just sent it on an ssd trail king from amain. Should be a fantastic 2nd wave lockdown project
Sounds great!
Hey I just stopped watching and went searching for overdrive portal gears for trx4. I didn’t find anything. But maybe my search words were incorrect. “Trx4 portal overdrive output/input gears”
So I’m back and finishing the vid. Are there overdrive options for trx4 besides the ring/pinion in the axles?
I believe the fender's manufacturing process might be "SLS" which is what Shapeways use. It's "Selective Laser Sintering".
In retrospect, I think you're right!
Good 👍👍👍
eh i just chalk up the 6-bolt pattern to having the portal conversion of the JL and JT lol
i be having a hard time chooses what kind of truck I want as my crawler. one being money but mainly idk what body I want. it most likely is the sc 10 or trx 4 but what body. I like old power wagons but jeeps look ok too and the old chevy body seems like a classic. idk
I can hear Josh rolling his eyes now over all that brass..... 😂 Or is it from the wine Friday night? 🤷♂️
At least it's pretty stealthy!
@@scalebuildersguild agreed... It's nice that they can coat the brass now...
What overdrive portal gears did you use?
what break rotors did u use
I got a $500 budget what would you recommend the axial scx10 3 gladiator or jeep JL traxxas trx 4 redact gen 8 axe edition?
will the rock sliders fit a scx10ii
I like the stock width ...
second gear helps in snow
and i paid for the whole truck im using the whole truck with my dx5c
Now your tolken! I love ssd I love brass and I love bfg! Maybe do the castle micro X esc I'm kinda interested in that one I'd be nice to see your thoughts on it. What body do you think axial will use next?
I used the Mamba Micro X in the C2X comp build, check that out!
wish they would come out with the newer Tacoma body
I'm looking into this rig and you mentioned it has a 13.9 inch wheelbase. But on the axial website it says it has a 14 inch wheelbase and includes a larger more realistic 3 piece body. Do you know if there's a newer version of the gladiator?
13.9 and 14 are basically the same, maybe they rounded up? Thanks for watching!
I jumped here from stage 3.
I want to trace this cool process from the source。
Question. Could you hook something else to the 3rd channel besides the dig/2-speed?
You could put whatever you wanted there.
Does it still click?
down pinion gear from 14 to 12, i use traxxax 32 p hardened steel one, much better performance and smoothness
I need a place where I can just print out a list of all the goodies you put on there
Links are in the description!
With the more aggressive offset (looks much better), did you have any rubbing issues with the tire at the lower rear of the front wheelwells when crawling? If so, what was your resolution? I’m working on getting mine set up with new wheels/tires and want to get much more aggressive with the offset, but at the same time I want to not rub when out on the rocks.
A little, but you can offset the rub with a longer shock. A lot depends on how wide your offset is!
What how much wider is the ssd brake rotor kit you put on ? ssd has 3 different offset options
3mm.
17:34 how are you supposed to stop without calipers on those rotors? I’ve done tons of brake jobs and I know calipers are a crucial part to stopping the vehicle.
Drag brake in the motor, duh. ;)
What is the connector for the batteries when first put of the box is it a IC5 or IC3
IC3.
Guy down the road has a 1:1 Gladiator and it is done in G.I.Joe colors and decals.
Never jumped into the initial 10 III releases. Actually hate the gladiator in real life but, the RC version looks great. Parts bin is already getting stocked full of hop-ups for it, when I buy it.
Any rubbing issues with the water stance I put extended portal shafts on my TRX defender and it rubs like crazy ended up taking them off
Rubbing? No. It wasn’t that much wider than stock.
Well it would be nice if you should how to install the fender lights. Ali has ok stuff but no instructions and splicing into wires sucks.
No splicing required. They plug right into an open slot on your receiver. Thanks for watching!
I've found imo that a 2.2" rim with a 4.19" tire looks really nice and more scale.
it looks more stock not necessarily scale.
@@mojaverc1585 1.9's with 3.9 tires maybe..
mike Morrow yeah whatever looks good to you I just prefer the more modified look
@@mojaverc1585lol all good. Variety adds spice. Who wants the exact same style as everyone else
