The final boss fight with Rayvis occurs in a facility built around a giant, vaporizing laser beam. Coincidentally enough, like you said, one of the ways we know how to kill a gen’dai for good is to completely vaporize them. Kind of a missed opportunity there, I feel
Agreed. Huge miss on Respawn’s part.
I think we all thought the same thing. But I liked one comment that pointed out how it probably was intentionally misleading, and vaporizing Rayvis wouldn't have been a worthy death for a character that made emphasis on following a warrior's code and wished to die with dignity. Which was a nice and unexpected nuance for a Gen'dai character when you think about it.
@@Dass_Jennir that is a good point. Gave Cal a chance to have his code tested as well, something that probably wouldn’t have happened if we just threw him in the laser
@@andrewsever4651 exactly, iirc, it was after this fight that the game began to really emphasize on that theme. Even Cal directly mentions it to BD as they return to the Mantis.
Vaporising someone isnt exactly very Jedi like.
Durge was a monster in the Republic comics from the 2000's. A ruthless and brutal villain who got a fittingly brutal death.
Fun fact: the Gen'Dai are named after Genndy Tartakovsky - the showrunner for the 2003 Clone Wars that originated Durge!
Yeah, I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned in the video.
I love that they’re named after Genndy Tartakovsky. The creator of that clone wars micro series that introduced Durge
Love how Durge in the dr Aprhra comics is like:
"I'm notorious hard to kill".
Everybody who knows his legends counterpart knows that's the understatement of the millennium.
That’s the one thing I thought was weird about Rayvis’ death in game. When Cal killed him I was thinking “He should come back from that”, but I liked your explanation.
Rayvis was SUCH a great villain in Survivor. He's honestly one of my favourites now. I feel like it's so rare we see an honourable bad guy so Rayvis felt very distinct. He's clearly a bad guy and a sadist, I don't feel bad for him necessarily but he still lives by a code and his dynamic with Dagan was great. Again, it felt rare to have two villains with genuine respect for each other, even though Dagan is clearly the superior giving the orders. Rayvis' backstory is also really interesting, he was a Jedi hunter during the time of the High Republic, hunting down members of the Jedi Order, killing them and taking their lightsabers as trophies, exactly like General Grievous did in the Clone Wars. Someone like that being active during the supposed golden age of the Republic and the Jedi is really interesting to me.
From the moment they revealed him in the trailers and he appeared to be a Gen'Dai, I KNEW he was going to be a NIGHTMARE to fight in boss battles. My first reaction was "Oh NO! HOW ARE WE GONNA BEAT HIM?! It took Anakin blasting Durge into a sun to kill him!" And it turned out I was right, he took me 4 hours to beat on my first playthrough on Grand Master. It might be my favourite one of the game though, it was genuinely a lot of fun! Honestly I accepted Cal simply beheading him, I feel like that would have destroyed the nerves connected to his brain but I hadn't considered the possibility Cal literally destroyed his head instead. I also like the fact that Rayvis' death wasn't some grand spectacle, I was honestly expecting having to do something huge to stop him but he honours his code and requests Cal kill him before attacking again to force the Jedi to do so despite being offered a chance to live. He mentioned being captured by the Jedi during the High Republic and they refused to kill him and imprisoned him for his crimes instead, despite his request for a warrior's death and Rayvis felt dishonoured by that act. He may have even felt like he should have died 200 years ago which might explain why he was so willing to die in his battle with Cal, rather than joining him and getting the chance to see Tanalorr again, something he mentions dreaming of for centuries. Rayvis died because he allowed Cal to destroy him so he could go out on his own terms. That's a top notch end for a character like him. Cal has a knack for killing the unkillable it seems.😂
There are also a handful on Gen'Dai in The Old Republic MMO, one was a leader in a gang of pirates on Hoth, not dissimilar to Rayvis actually, and another was actually a freedom fighter opposing the Sith Empire and he actually touches on their Legends history of getting attacked by the Sith and nearly driven to extinction. They aren't major characters in that game but it's still always cool to see a member of the species pop up because it always means things are about to get tough and we're in for good storytelling.
My favorite line from him; “Without a code, you can only serve yourself.” Not something you’d expect to hear from someone like him. Possibly contradictory considering his occupation as a the leader of a band of raiders, but maybe he treats them well? Hope we can find out more about him and how he becomes the leader of the Bedlam Raiders.
Obviously now that Durge is no longer Clone Wars area character his motivations are likely different, but I always thought it was interesting in legends that he joined the CIS specifically so he could kill Clones because he hated Mandalorians as a group of Mandos had captured him for like a thousand years and tortured him
Maybe he can have beef with Boba Fett for the same reason.
Since the species can live for thousands of years, it’s still fully possible that we could see Durge in the Clone Wars era, obviously not in the same way we did in Legends, but he could definitely still be present!
@@JoshThompsonProductions Perhaps multiple Gen'Dai have utilized the dirge identity, Given that two out of the four battles from the original 2003 clone wars, Have been restored to the cannon through the Obi Wan kenobi comic Miniseries in issue 3 as Obi Wan writes in this journal he mentions the Battle of Dantooine and the slaughter on Hypori We're even given a better look at the body of jedi master Daakman Barrek Who was stabbed through the chast by general grievous in the original short we only see maser Barrek hand fall to the ground. so Perhaps the dirge we see Obi Wan pop like a balloon which is just one bearer of the mantle and another Gen'Dai took over The new bear of the Dirichlet of course happens to live into the events of the original trilogy.
@@mrheroprimes It’s possible! It is important to keep in mind though, that just because a battle is mentioned in canon… doesn’t necessarily mean all the players in it are canon, so if a battle from Legends that included Durge in Legends is now canon, then Durge would only be canon in that battle if depicted in that battle… so we don’t fully know if he’s in that fight yet! He might be and probably is, but it’s still unknown fully
Either way, even in Legends, Durge didn’t die in that fight if he was thrown into a Sun by Anakin later, so if he was in that battle in Canon, he could have still lived
People often forget about the Empire’s ill-fated Project Durge in Legends. Even getting blasted into that sun might not have killed him. What they salvaged and plugged into the droid body eventually went rogue as a bounty hunter, and Boba Fett was pretty certain he wasn’t dead yet even after you took care of him in Galaxies.
1:10 As context for those with less knowledge of the Legends Timeline: that means a Gen'Dai born during the Great Hyperspace War (5000 BBY) could hypothetically live until the events of the Legacy comics which is the farthest beyond the Original Trilogy the original Expanded Universe got to...
In Star Wars The Old Republic online game, there is a mission where a Gen'dai called "The Flame" is (perhaps) the main culprit. The imperial admiral he have captured reveals that you can kill them by shredding and dispersing their bodies.. They must feel unease around a woodchipper 😀
He also stated that they have no brains to fail. Whether hyperbole or not, idk
It would be interesting to see if Rayvis appears in the High Republic era, considering we know that he had been working with Dagan Gera since he beat him.
It would be interesting to see him appear looking for Dagan in the comics or the novels and he ends up fighting the jedi there
Imagine if Pong Krell fought a Gen'Dai, before the Clone Wars?
(off subject) What if the next Tales of the Jedi had Pong Krell and Ord Enisence backstory?
I keep thinking how the future TOTJ episodes can reveal and expand on.
Maybe showing Krell and Enisence on a mission.
The Gen'Dai is a species that absolutely should be in Star Wars more. I get that in some based off how you explained it that their species are limited and had to scattered giving them a Yoda species type feel to them but I think with how powerful and threatening they are they could be used for so much good Star Wars storytelling.
The Gen'Dai are one of my favorite species in Star Wars.
While I think it sucks that "beheading" is now one of the ways to kill 'em in the New Canon, since it happens in a video game, I think one can let it slide.
After all, in SWTOR, you could literally punch Gen'Dai to death if you have the Scrapper-Scoundrel advance class...
Though I do hope they eventually retcon it so that Ravys only died because either his healing-factor simply was at its limit or because he decided not to regenerate before getting beheaded and his healing factor didn't kick in because of that.
Rayvis was by bar my favourite new character from Survivor. I just wish he had more screen time.
I had NO CLUE Rayvis was just like Durge. Nor did I know all this about their species! Thanks for this info man!
Rayvis was a very hard boss. I got killed by him seven times! It took a frickin’ SUN to kill Durge. Glad they managed to take some stuff from Legends and show how extremely tough these guys are.
Great to see that the species has nuance to individuals, they aren't all rabid monsters or some such. Hope to see more of their kind.
Another amazing video
Cal has really racked up an impressive body count of bad guys
Thank you!
Imagine a Gen'Dai Jedi or even Sith.
Might happen, there wasn't a Mandalorian Jedi before Disney took over the canon.
I love how the Gen'Dai and Mgalekgolo from Halo are similarr
Hey Alex, I don't know how much you know about the Halo franchise, but the Gen 'Dai and the Hunters sound very similar, are they similar to you or different?
Reminds me in SWTOR the one Imp officer puts the remains of one we beaten into an incinerator finishing him off.
In the Heir to the Empire series there was one dark shadow alien that Luke or Han had to face outside the falcon while docked. He was a phantom and a black void. Very mysterious and I wondered if there was more appearance of their species or information on them. Sorry I can't recall which book or the aliens name.
So happy that Ravi’s and drugs brought the gendai back to canon I think we going to see them in James mangold film
My dream cross-over team up would be Durge the Bounty hunter and Dirge the Decepticon.
My favourite durge moment is still probably when he grabbed a jedi by the neck, told him to take a deep breath and then proceeded to dunk said jedi’s had in a river of lava.
You either have to go for (the top of) the head, or you have to destroy them completely with the same thoroughness as Cell or Majin Buu.
Bruh I killed one of these guys on Nar Shadda as a sith inquisitor in SWTOR.
Would like to see a video about Shistavanen and other wolfish and foxish sentient alien species🥺
I know that Durge's og death was non-cannon but I was a little underwhelmed with how Ravis died. Like a freind pointed out that he thought Rayvis was going to be incinerated by the array laser thing. Idk he was really cool but like... Obi-Wan turned Durge into literal goop and he was fine later... Ravis' death just felt a lil to easy
They sort of remind me of the Hunters from Halo
Love Durge, our body horror Boba Fett who is also a knight and a biker.
Durge Was A Missed Opportunity Since he still alive in New Cannon although he’s still dead in legends.
Fun fact: durge was originally going to be in TCW serving in the same role as cad bane. However the clone wars team believed that they wouldn't be able to do him justice with the animation they had. Thus durge was cut
Actually it was because the animation team had trouble trying to create his abilities and I wouldn’t be surprised if the budget was another reason.
The Gen’Dai are an enigma to me, if I was a scientist in the Star Wars universe, I would be obsessed with the biology of this species just so I can create a genetically altered clone that has their regenerative abilities…
I know star wars maybe brings back characters from the dead a little too often, but I hope Rayvis shows up in the next Jedi game. If anyone can come back, it's the near-unkillable giant alien guy
👍
How have Gen'Dai not taken over the galaxy?
Please talk about the Grysk, Jixtus and their similarities and differences with the Vong and other EU species.
We should all know that if they don’t show the death happening on screen there’s a chance they survived.
Do you think we will see Rotta the Hut in the Book of Boba Fett season two?
The Book of Boba Fett will very likely not have a second season.
Choose your side Light side or Dark side
I prefer Durge from that Clone Wars micro series; I’m sad to hear that they’ve retconned that entirely by bringing him (and Asajj Ventress) back to be killed off again in less interesting ways. They were so cool, original, and dangerous in that series. It’s like how General Grievous got so dramatically nerfed in the Clone Wars. Just make new things instead of making good things worse by not letting them go! 😫
Durge doesnt die in the show tho.
If you watch the scene it explicitly shows durge starting to reform from the goop obi wan created
And he showed up a month later in the comics along with ventress in legends.
wait, how would he know that? has his tongue been cut out before?
Every other body part of his grows back when it's cut so I think it's safe to assume a tongue would grow back.
He was wasted. Gen dai are nearly impossible to kill and we all remember Durge from 2003 clone wars. The only major complaint I have when it comes to this game.
Honestly, Rayvis should have been the character that Cal faces multiple times, not Dagan Gera.
Dagan should have simply been his first duel, fresh out of the Bacta Tank, and then his final duel after Rayvis was already dead, which would’ve been the 3rd Dagan Gera fight.
It would’ve been so cool to see Cal struggling to kill Rayvis, so he tries to behead him/chop his head in half, or even to have Rayvis be COMPLETELY severed into a mess of tendrils and broken armor, only to then suddenly reappear for a rematch, furious at Cal for being unable to kill him after besting him in combat, and the SECOND Rayvis fight could’ve been the in game Rayvis fight, but it would’ve revolves around a seemingly rabid and VISCIOUS Rayvis, hellbent on dying, or killing Cal Kestis, whichever comes first, which would’ve forced Cal to run through the Particle Beam laser area of Shattered Moon of Koboh in reverse, occasionally stopping for a mini fight with new moves added to Rayvis’s attacks, and less and less armor + less and less of a humanoid shape, ultimately climaxing in Cal Force Slowing, crunching, and Lifting Rayvis’s entire body of formless tendrils into a pile, in the middle of the Particle Beam’s path, which would then instantly vaporize Rayvis.
Hell, I’d even go as far as to say that Rayvis should’ve been the second boss, the first one you fight on Koboh, instead of that Raider Veteran. Where in upon winning the fight (maybe severing Rayvis in half, or cutting one of his entire arms off, or pulling an Anakin Vs Dooku on him and severing both of Rayvis’s hands, that’s where it’s revealed that Rayvis can simply reattach severed limbs or just regenerate new ones.
Maybe you could have Cal disarm and sever both hands during the mid battle cutscene, only for Rayvis to instantly regrow them, and then defeating Rayvis by cutting him in half at the waist or severing an entire limb, right as Rayvis brutally wounds Cal. The cutscene after the battle is won would show Rayvis needing to step back and chuckling while Cal is healed by a BD-1 Stim or struggles to get back up. Rayvis would then reattach that severed part of himself and posit something like “Finally, a worthy opponent” or something to that effect of “I can’t wait to fight you again.” Before retreating with his raiders, obviously still having won that fight, but intrigued by Cal’s combative potential.
